  • Lake Mackintosh is a Hydro Tasmania lake near Tullah in Tasmania’s west. Surrounded by mountains and old growth forests, It dams the Mackintosh River and Sophia River, then feeds Mackintosh Power Station, Tasmania through into Lake Rosebery. / The Murchison River (Tasmania) is also fed into this lake through the Murchison Dam, to the south. / Like all Hydro Tasmania lakes, Lake Mackintosh is stocked with plump trout. You can launch your boat at a number of boat ramps on the Lake and spend the day fishing, or enjoy a picnic or barbecue on the shore. / Literally surrounded by lakes, Tullah is a haven for boating and fishing enthusiasts. • In order to use the corn or grains for baking they had to be ground into flour. This could be done by mortar and pestle but is very time consuming using this method. Man as far back as the 1st B.C. has used hydropower to help speed up this process. The use of this power came to be known as gristmills. / A water wheel consists of a large wooden or metal wheel, with a number of blades or buckets arranged on the outside rim forming the driving surface. Most commonly, the wheel is mounted vertically. Water turns the wheel then gears and ultimately the grinding stones. They are many verities of this method. / The wheel here at the John Cable Mill in Cades Cove is known as an overshot type. This gets its name from water running over the top of the wheel. This mill wasn’t the 1st in Cades Cove but by 1870 the population was large enough to support another.

  • Thanks to owlspook / this work has a title now. Photographed in Stonewall, Manitoba, Canada I was driving throught this small town when I noticed these unusual clouds formations and then this single rail track came into view and I just had to stop and take a pic. I love the way it turned out but to find a perfect title for it is another story. I definitely need help with it. Canon XSi, f/8, 1/4000, ISO-400, 55mm

  • These robust agaric mushroooms were growing on the dead timber washed ashore on this beach at Lake Pedder. It’s a high-energy beach which must see some serious wave action, so it’s interesting to find mature fungi there. Perhaps it’s been a while since the last big storm.

  • A cobble bank juts out into Lake Burbury and provides a foundation for trees and shrubs to colonise.

  • Another shot from my little anniversary get away two weeks ago. By the overgrown and faint nature of the trail in combination with the profusion of blackberries I don’t imagine this drop would get many visits. Getting to the top of the falls isn’t too difficult, getting to the bottom however was a little more involved. The falls are in the middle of a big loop in the river, the two ends of the loop in combination with a significant altitude drop being too much of a temptation for the hydro engineers to ignore. So despite its relatively modest flows just above the falls is a weir with a pipe running over the neck of the loop with a small hydro generator at the bottom. The result is a very modest flow in between where the falls are even in spring. Still a nice drop despite this. Took heaps of shots and finally packed everything up to go home then as I was recrossing the river saw this angle and thought… 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

  • These cattle were feeding in the pasture. The sunset, fog and curiosity of the cattle made for an interesting shot. To the right is a tall silo from a neighboring farm, barely seen in the fog. January 21, 2009, Canon 50D; Sigma lens @150mm /
