I took this photo while traveling along the Calder Highway near Gap Hill in Victoria. I have never really seen a rainbow this close before, it almost ends on the highway itself. This was a quick shot so camera was on ‘Portrait’ mode. I took three frames and this was the one that worked. / I used Photoshop to crop the image slightly and to increase the contrast. Nothing was added or removed, the mark on the left side is water on the windscreen and you can just see the wiper blade at the bottom of the image. Images like this one for me are about the composition, quality of light and an attempt to make the invisible visible-to somehow photograph the ‘soul’ of a place or object.
With childlike wonderment I explore the perimeter of this abandoned home, peering in the window panes, many which have been busted out. The door is padlocked, to keep me out. Curiousity burns inside me as I imagine the lives of the people that once called this place home. The door is my time machine, allowing me to travel back in time. How I would love to visit my grandparents when they were young, and learn first hand about their lives before I was ever born. This abandoned house can be found on Hwy 412 in Gordonsburg, TN. When i was a child… every year we would take our vacation trip from mich. to miss to see relatives…on the way we would see these barns everywhere with ads on them…”see seven states from rock city” but my Dad would never take us to see it!! / So when we moved here that was one of the first places Bob and i saw on one of our road trips…i then wanted to take photos of all of the old barns and make a photo book of them,,, / sigh,,,someone allready did it! and…most of the barns have now disappeared as a past era. / Shannon Falls is composed of a series of cliffs, rising 335 meters above Highways 99, making it the third highest falls in the province, ranking behind 481 metre Della Falls in Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island and 396 metre Hunlen Falls in Tweedsmuir Provincial Park near Bella Coola. The tumbling waters of Shannon Falls originate from Mount Habrich and Mount Sky Pilot. This park is directly adjacent to Highway 99, making it a popular day-use park . This park provides picnicking, hiking and access to the trail in Stawamus Chief Provincial Park. The falls were named after Shannon who in 1890-1900 owned the falls and surrounding area and used the clay deposits to make bricks. He then sold the land to Brittania Copper Mines in 1900. In the 1930’s, the area was used as a relief camp for the workers building Highway 99. In 1976 the area was purchased by Carling O’Keefe Brewery, who used the pure mountain water to brew their beer, and made the area a logging show park. In 1982 O’Keefe donated the land to BC Parks. Throughout the park area there is evidence of logging activity that occurred here roughly 90 years ago. A number of excellent spring board notches on old stumps are scattered throughout the forested area and much of the deadfall also exhibits evidence of the logging techniques of this period. Cultural Heritage: / This park holds significant spiritual value to the Squamish Indians, the first people to live in this area. They told of a two headed sea serpent, Say-noth-ka who lived in and around Howe Sound. According to legend this beast travelled both on land and in water. Some versions say it was Say-noth-ka who formed Shannon Falls by slithering and twisting his powerful body up the mountainside on repeated expeditions, Say-noth-ka gradually wore down a spillway for those cascading waters.
This area is called Julia Pfeiffer-Burns State Park. It is located along California’s central coast, and has some of the most spectacular scenery you can imagine. This is the fantastic scene we witnessed from the front porch of our cabin in the Ozark National Forest. Their is just something about being in the mountains and seeing the sun peer through the fog on a cool crisp autumn morning. We had a beautiful time enjoying the beauty of God’s creation all around us. Canon EOS 30D Other images from the Ozarks:

Top Ten Challenge Winner in the High Quality Animal Images group Featured in the group: Antlers, Racks, and Other Horned Animals Elk in very dense backlit fog, very hard to shoot. Although I was hoping to get more detailed shots, I am lucky to have seen them at all. The elk were grazing off Hwy 21 near Boxley Valley, Arkansas in the Upper Buffalo River Region. They were grazing on federally protected lands in a lowland valley of the Ozark National Forest. The Buffalo Wilderness area has such a unique beauty. Between 1981 and 1985, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission released 112 western elk from Colorado and Nebraska in Newton County near the Buffalo National River. Though elk in Arkansas have subsequently been observed in 14 counties, most of the estimated 450 to 500 members of the species now believed to inhabit the state occur in Newton and Searcy Counties on National Park Service land along the Buffalo’s upper and middle sections. The commission, the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service and private interests are all engaged in efforts to maintain and expand suitable elk habitat within Arkansas.
