  • “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough“. Robert Capa’s wisdom echoes as fresh today as it ever was. If you accept the truth that you can’t be too close, how far is too far? I was sharing the afternoon with my computer, all the light stuff, browsing and shifting files around, when events in the harbour hijacked my attention Just one look through the window, and you know it’s the moment you should be part of, somehow. As a dedicated instinct driven photographer you grab your camera and run into the oncoming rain, braving the wild wind and the clusters of objects, which on an ordinary day don’t reside in mid air, just to get a shot, or better, The Shot. Not quite, not me. I did take my compact camera but observed the menace for a while behind the safety of a closed window. The dark clouds extinguished the sunlight within minutes, and what was left of it refracted considerably before hitting the harbour from different angles, creating an extraordinary dance of light and shadows on the motionless surface of the ocean. I took a couple of shots from left to right with the clear intention of stitching them together. Shortly after, the darkness descended. How come the most threatening events can look so spectacular? The storm climbed uphill and started to shake the house, rattling windows in an attempt to rip the glass from the frames, as it wished to suck in that couch potato and spit him out there, where he should be. Yeah baby, just go hard; you may be angry but the structure is sound, and I know it. I casually walked back to my seat and continued browsing the Net as if nothing had happened. What else can you do on a day like this?

  • Shot at the Hutt River, New Zealand, Trentham Park Fireworks. This is a digital composition of three images.

  • Shot on the Hutt River, view towards Silverstream, i took this on the way home, a change of weather setting in, love the perspective of the clouds mimicking the edges of the valley. This is were we walk the dod early mornings. Shot on a Nikon D700, Nikkor 17-35mm Lens

  • Shot on State highway 2 on the way home to Upper Hutt, I’ve been trying to get this tree for ages, twice a day the sun hits it side on, its new growth just glows against a stormy sky, view towards Stokes valley. The other thing is, I’m stood in the middle of the two lanes southbound to get this shot, you’ve got to pick your moment.

  • Shot at the Hutt River just below Moonshine Bridge near Trentham Park, New Zealand. When I got there the sun was still lighting up the valley, lovely soft light, half an hour latter and the clouds in the sky were being under lit bu the last light of the sun, 5mins after this and the light had gone.. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm lens, with Cokin ND4 grad filter. / Hutt River Slipway

  • Shot while walking the dog last weekend, avoiding the heavy rain, the dog doesn’t care, black labs are water dogs, i just didn’t want to get soaked, try explaining that to an excited dog that just wants to go for a walk. The next day you couldn’t stand here, so much rain in the hills and the river rose, this is a view of the Hutt River towards Moonshine bridge. New Zealand. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 24-70 Nikkor lens and a Cokin ND4 grad filter.

  • A birthday shot for me, 49 to day, nasty weather all weekend, just managed to get down the river for half an hour, rain had stopped and the sky broke up enough to let the light through, shot lots of different angle of this trapped branch, this one is the best, the 17 mm lens allows you to get so close. Shot at the Hutt River just below Moonshine Bridge near Trentham Park, New Zealand. Sun still lighting up the valley, lovely soft light, 5mins after this and the light had gone.. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm lens, with Cokin ND8 grad filter. Same location over the last couple of weeks. / More rain to come! / Hutt River Slipway / Sunday pink

  • One of twelve limited Edition Canvas exclusive to Mary Archibalds Gallery, Contact Mary and the girls on 04 939 2112 archibaldsart@xtra.co.nz 95 Main Street Upper Hutt Shot along the Hutt River near Trentham Park in a small side stream after a hail storm, I’d taken the dog out and we had to shelter under a tree while the storm passed, once it cleared the light was magic, at the bottom of the valley the sun was trying to burst through (never did) which gave this Autumn peach tone. the peach tone lasted for about 3 mins and then it was gone followed by another down pore, I love the way the mist over Moonshine and Riverstone merges with the sky, I needed a very low angle to get the light reflected into the water, I’m om my knees in the water for this shot and it was bloody cold. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens and a cokin ND8 grad All Twelve canvases: / River Run Dawn Dawn Candy / Candy shop dawn / River Run Dawn Blues / Tuning Fork Falls / Broken Autumn Hues / SunShine over MoonShine / Sunshine over Moonshine Rocks / Stags Head Rock / River Run Dusk Hues / Candy Shop Tripple Ripple / The Dawn Star / Dawn Torment

  • Shot in the Hutt River, near Trentham Park, view towards Silverstream, SH2 on the right, Moonshine Bridge behind me. sunrise at the moment is about 7.30am, rising behind me, the rise wasn’t that flash but the effect of the light thrown was pure magic. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm lens, with Cokin ND8 grad filter. Other images that I shot this morning / Perfect Cotton Floss / Candy Floss Hutt Dawn / Vertical Candy Floss Dawn / Towards Silverstream

  • This is the one for me, this one has all the drama, love the sky breaking up to the left, this wasn’t were I was going this morning, the end of the valley had low lying cloud, that clour acted as a barrier, stopping the sun coming through and throwing this fantastic pink light down the valley. This location is 5 mins from home, behind me is SH2, and streaming cars heading to work in Wellington, we have had bad weather lately which is giving some great skys. Shot in the Hutt River, looking into Trentham Park, this is about 7.45am, sun rising to my left. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm lens, with Cokin ND8 grad filter. Other images I shot this morning / Perfect Cotton Floss / Candy Floss Hutt Dawn / Vertical Candy Floss Dawn / Towards Silverstream

  • Shot in the Hutt River near Moonshine Bridge, Upper Hutt, New Zealand. We have had some great last light in the valley, the change starts about 4.30pm and its gone in less than half an hour, stunning soft pinks and peaches. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens, Cokin ND8 grad, tripod and sand bag. check out the image below, this is about 10 mins latter, the sky is loosing its pink giving way to lovely wedgewood blues, this is a closer angle to the log in the foreground which reveals a trapped plastic wrap. / Its a wrap!

  • Shot in the Hutt River near Moonshine Bridge, Upper hutt, New Zealand. I wasn’t going to publish this one but I like it more that the others I shot that evening, the angle is right, movement, light is stunning, I love the petrol blues and pink. Yesterday I removed the plastic wrapper from this log to try some other angles, but in this shot it adds the extra interest and isn’t this a sign of the times, you go to a beautiful location to find that you are removing some rubbish before you can shoot, yesterday i found a portable TV in the river, what next. Let me know what you think, I love it. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens, Cokin ND8 grad, tripod and sand bag. / Trapped charred wood

  • Sot at the Hutt River near Trentham park, a small side stream running very slow, cold as Ice, after I’d finished this morning the water had frozen onto the tripod, as i closed the legs a sleeve of ice was shed, I couldn’t get too close to the camera, i had to hold my breath while changing settings for fear of fogging the back. The shot below was taken about half an hour latter, I’d started in a blue/purple spectrum, this wane is moving into the orange/ yellow spectrum, at this point the light behind me was pink. shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor lens, cokin ND8 grad. / Peach Frost / not sure which one I like the best, this is the same branch in / Broken Autumn Hues

  • Sot at the Hutt River near Trentham park, a small side stream intersects with the main river, more force thatn you think going across these stones, this is the oposite angle to Peach Mist / Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor lens, cokin ND8 grad.

  • Shot in the Hutt River near Moonshine Bridge, Upper Hutt, New Zealand, view towards Silverstream. I’ve been working with this trapped timber for a few weeks now and still have not got the shot that I want, the water is freezing and changes in depth daily making it hard to get near, 15 mins in the water and your feet go dumb, not nice. Until this weekend, when I had a revelation! Fishing Waders, I’m now the proud owner of chest high fishing waders, well, what can I tell you, happy as a pig in muck, here I am knee deep in surging river right next to the trapped timber. My other new kit is a pair of saddle bag style weight bags, fill them with rocks from the shore and add several pounds of weight to your tripod, now the tripod is stable against the surge of the stream, I recommend these, when you are done toss away the stones and you are away laughing. Extreme kit for extreme shot, works for me! Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens, Cokin ND8 grad, tripod and sand bag. / Trapped charred wood

  • Shot in the Hutt River near Moonshine Bridge, Upper Hutt, New Zealand, view towards Moonshine Bridge. I’ve been working with this trapped timber for a few weeks now and still have not got the shot that I want, this is becoming a challenge, what I want is to get this image at sunrise, the sun comes up at the end of the tree line, it could be magical, I will keep at it. All made possible by my fishing waders and sandbags, what you cant tell, coz my 17mm lens is so wide angle that the lens is about 30cm from that branch, I’m knee deep in the water and the water drops off to about 4 feet to the right of the branch, an extreme approach but thats the difference, no one else can get this shot, no one else is daft enough. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens, Cokin ND8 grad, tripod and sand bag.

  • just on a whim, I got up at 5am and shot down the river, this spot is 5mins from home, my wife said the weather was going to be crap, not worth going out, you’re wasting your time, Brilliant! when people tell you its gonna be bad the chances are that its gonna be SENSATIONAL!!! you be the judge, I’m very happy with this image. Shot in the Hutt River near Silverstream, view towards upper Hutt and Moonshine Bridge. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens, Cokin ND4 grad, tripod and sand bags. Active D-Lighting on high, ISO 100

  • This is our local river, 5 mins from our house, great location, sunrise comes up straight in line with the river during winter, stormy days give amazing skies at dawn and dusk, this is a pet project, a lot of these images were hard to get, many mornings knee deep in stone cold water fresh from the mountains. Now I have my handy dandy fishing waders, pure luxury, now I can spend hours in the river.

  • In twelve years I’d never seen this waterfall, drove through the Akatarawa Road heading to the coast many times, never seen the waterfall, the sign says “Jock Atkins waterfall 200m” i thought it was a myth. About a month ago i had to fetch our dog from the home stay in the Akatarawas, we’d hat continuos rain for days, as I rounded a tight bend in the road there it was, a narrow gap in the bush revealed this lovely fall, I collected the dog raced home to get the camera and went back to get this. Just found a lovely tribute to Jock Atkins on the Efil Doog site, Jack died the year we came to New Zealand and its taken me 12 years to find him, thanks Jack for revealing your splendid fall to me. Taken on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor lens
