WILD & FREE / / Honey (named after the colour of her eyes) and her three cubs were very obliging to rest on this ridge whilst they scanned the plains for breakfast. Taken in the Masai Mara early one morning about half an hour after sunrise, this is one of my favourite images and I find myself always coming back to it. / / (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / The world’s fastest land animal, the cheetah, is a unique and the most specialized member of the cat family and can reach speeds of 70 mph. Unlike other cats, the cheetah has a leaner body, longer legs, and has been referred to as the greyhound of the cats. It is not an aggressive animal, using flight versus fight. With its weak jaws and small teeth, the price it paid for speed, it cannot fight larger predators to protect its kill or young. The cheetah was once a common animal found on five continents, but is slowly losing its race for survival and is now classed as an Endangered Species! The jaguar is a near threatened species and its numbers are declining. Threats include habitat loss and fragmentation. While international trade in jaguars or their parts is prohibited, the cat is still regularly killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with ranchers and farmers in South America. More and more bears are being found to have drowned while trying to find the ice, even though they can swim up to sixty miles or so! / / I hope the ice does not completely vanish and that they always have somewhere to hut! This fox sneaked up on me, while I was taken pictures of something else. I had gotten a late start this morning, and didn’t think I would see any foxes that day. So, when I had my camera pointing towards a big beehive up in a tree, this fox walked up on the log. A big surprise for me when I lowered my camera, but I managed to get two good shots before he continued his morning walk. / f/8, 1/250 sec, ISO 400, focal length 300 mm. So I recently returned back to one of my favorite sites to photograph. This is the Whalehead Hunt Club in Currituck, North Carolina. Currituck Lighthouse is also visible on the left. This particular morning was just beautiful, very rare to have hardly any wind coming across Currituck Sound. The reflection turned out awesome, in my opinion. Image has been processed through Redynamix for the HDR look and also had the Orton effect applied. Best viewed in large. / Image made with tripod mounted Nikon D200, Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, remote shutter release.

What can I say … Sometimes it all does come together perfect. I absolutely love how this turned out, hope you do as well. Image made with a Nikon D200 And Tokina 12-24mm lens. Slight touch of HDR post processing applied, converted to Sepia Tones in Adobe Digital Lightroom.

This juvenile bald eagle carries the carcass of a mallard duck, he may have killed himself, or stolen from another eagle. Life in the marsh can be difficult, and all its inhabitants struggle to survive during the winter. This image was captured at a marsh in the Comox Valley of Canada’s Vancouver Island in February of 2009 using a Nikon D300, a Nikkor f4 600 mm lens, on a large Gitzo tripod, ISO 400, f4, 1/500s. Within a few seconds of this capture, the eagle loses his grip on the duck and drops it into the waters of the marsh in an image I titled, The Gruesome End
