I found this little tree on one of those perfect blue sky alpine days that seem to go on forever. I spent the morning wandering around looking for pictures in this amazing place and came across this little dead tree on the edge of a small cliff. I walked around looking for a pleasing composition and eventually found myself lying in the snow near the edge looking through the lens until this composition finally revealed itself. On the far side of the hump is a small down hill ski resort with 6 lifts. Until last year it was a popular beginner resort but with global warming affecting snow falls this slightly lower resort has found snow falls so unreliable that it has been forced to close. In my opinion Mt Buffalo is the most beautiful alpine area on mainland Australia, a must see. For more pictures from this area check out my Mt Buffalo gallery. • Camels Hump
    by Marilyn Harris

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Camels Hump As seen from Doug Sky Lookout, Mt Kaputar National Park, New South Wales. The Mt Kaputar (pronounced cap you tar) National Park lies to the east of Narrabri (approximately 53Km) and to the west of Barraba (approximately 55Km). Mt Kaputar, on the western edge of the Great Dividing Range, is the highest point until you reach Africa, and from its peak (on a clear day), about 10 percent of New South Wales is visible for 360º. The Mt Kaputar National Park is very much a local secret and holds a diverse range of vegetation and wildlife, including many threatened species. As much as 17 million years of erosion has sculpted the now extinct Nandewar volcano and what is left offers a majestic skyline of rocky outcrops with spectacular views. Mt Kaputar’s summit is 1524m and there are 11 marked walking tracks. Sets of Two / View_from_Doug_Sky_Lookout

  • I’m at a loss on this one. I was trying to throw junk in the basement away so I could sort of have a studio set-up. And I found this. I doubt if I’m done with it, but my girlfriend wants the stuff out of the den. My guess is there will be more work, I believe, but for now . . . uh . . . huh? Decker’s Hump Hill’s Pig Rings? It’s . . . not quite right. I have three boxes of this and a real desire to make a pithy statement. I should be able to piss people off with this one. The picture will improve. I intend pushing this one about as far as I can. That doesn’t mean car bombs and drunk Muslims seeking an insipid paradise . . . I would like to make it iconic. I always was difficult. It’s good to see that I still have that in me.

For the longest time I dreamed of a wild adventure in Italy. In April 2008 that dream became an extraordinary reality. Our visit to the forgotten city of Pompeii remains a highlight of our trip. The images and stories from this archaeological site will remain with me for the rest of my life. On August 24 in the year 79 A.D. the volcano Vesuvius exploded, taking the town by surprise. In just two hours the entire city of Pompeii was completely buried under a deadly shroud of ashes six meters deep. Walking through the streets of Pompeii it was difficult not to get caught up in the romance and the tragedy of Pompeii’s story. It is a ghost city. It speaks to you … calls out to you … envelops you. I was captivated and didn’t want to leave. You could stay a year and still not uncover all of Pompeii’s secrets. “Speed Humps” gives us a glimpse into one of the streets of Pompeii. The “humps” in the middle of the road did not hinder the traffic .. rather they made it possible for the merchants and towns people to cross the road when it was filled with water.

  • Got the Hump?

Adapted from an image in the public domain category of Wikimedia Commons here using Infranview and Coral PSP. Camels are even-toed ungulates within the genus Camelus. The dromedary, one-humped or Arabian camel has a single hump and is well known for its healthy low fat milk, and the Bactrian camel has two humps. They are native to the dry desert areas of western Asia, and central and east Asia, respectively. The term camel is also used more broadly to describe any of the six camel like creatures in the family Camelidae: the two true camels, and the four South American camelids, the llama, alpaca, guanaco, and vicuña. The average life expectancy of a camel is 40 to 50 years. A fully grown adult camel stands 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) at the shoulder and 2.15 m (7 ft 1 in) at the hump. The hump rises about 30 inches (75 cm) out of its body. Camels can run up to 65 km/h (40 mph) in short bursts and sustain speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph). Fossil evidence indicates that the ancestors of modern camels evolved in North America during the Palaeogene period, and later spread to most parts of Asia. Humans first domesticated camels before 2000 BC. The dromedary and the Bactrian camel are both still used for milk, meat, and as beasts of burden—the dromedary in western Asia and in Africa north of the sub-Saharan savannahs, and the Bactrian camel further to the north and east in central Asia. • This adult Bactrian Camel is a large even-toed ungulate native to the steppes of north eastern Asia. It is one of the two surviving species of camel. The Bactrian Camel has two humps on its back, in contrast to the single-humped Dromedary Camel. Nearly all of the estimated 1.4 million Bactrian camels alive today are domesticated, but in October 2002 the estimated 950 remaining in the wild in northwest China and Mongolia were placed on the critically endangered species list.
