Click on the images below for a more detailed close-up / / “Finches On Parade” is about the communal abstract chatter that one encounters when in amongst a crowd of like-minded personalities. / I have chosen not to emphasize the precise detail of each bird but rather their general shape as they caper around, to give the impression of constant movement. I stood watching this young bonobo ape (an endangered species related to the chimpanzee) for a while, and I noticed that after a bit he was watching me, too. So I started talking to him, simple things like “Hello there,” and “Aren’t you handsome?” (Yes, people gave me funny looks, and no, I didn’t care.) He actually seemed to like it, and we gestured and held eye contact for a couple of minutes. Then, some people strolled up next to me and started making obnoxious “monkey noises” and saying “Heyyy monkey monkey” and so on. Now, bonobos are not monkeys, they are apes, and they do not make “monkey noises,” and I could clearly see that this little guy found all of this annoying. So, after a moment, he purposefully stood up, turned around, bent over, and put his head between his legs as you see here. I don’t think the monkey-noise people really got it, but I did, and I so wish I could have given him a high-5. :P In conjunction with the Primates Group’s fundraising efforts, 100% of the profits from the sale of this image will be donated to Gorilla Haven.

I wish I could say that this photo was easy to do..but it wasn’t! / While it appears that I simply smeared my lipstick, it’s a bit more / complicated than that. I started out by converting it to a B&W-blue filter-then curving it using the red channel only. I then blew it up to about 300%..and airbrushed the dark red paint on..(no less than 200 agonizing brush strokes!) It was grueling-but fun. :-) / / / / / / >featured< / / / / /

*model/ concept: Art laugh because it’s funny, and cry because it’s so pitifully true, guys… the fact remains that even if you’re a talented design/ art/ photography student, the size of your income may not always be quite so proportionate to the size of your skill. (of course, if you throw in a heavy dose of prayer and ambition, THEN the equation changes…) special thanks to Art for coming up with the idea for this photo, and just being ballsy enough to do this at a freeway exit, where I’m sure drivers were more than a little weirded out by what they saw oh, and by the way… do you guys remember the good ol’ days when we thought $2.87 for a gallon of gas was expensive? we were young, naive and innocent then… fun fact: this photo is nearly two years old! I took this back in late 2006 when I didn’t even have my dSLR yet! I normally don’t go back that far when searching for past photos that are worthy of being tweaked in the lab, but this one was special :)

So it’s not really that I have so much extra time to do things like this… but who could resist staging a fight between their stapler and staple remover by the sink and turning it into a photoshoot? /
