A HUMBLE TRIBUTE / / These works are painted in an homage to the ancient souls responsible for creating the magnificent images in the caves of Chauvet, France. Above all other art forms, above all other masterpieces it is these artworks which call to me the loudest. As I look at these images I can almost smell the clay and earthen scents, I can hear the drumbeats of tribal drums pounding out a primal rhythm. I centre myself and free myself of all my pre-conceived ideas of what art is, what it means, and why we are driven to create. I pick up my paintbrush and lay down my first mark, with confidence and with passion. Before long I am lost inside my imaginings, lost inside my creation and I am one with the rock on which I paint. Needing to feel even closer, more connected to this creation I discard my brush and begin working the paint into the rock with my fingers. As my hands caress the stone, my fingers learn the geography of my canvas, each line, each ridge, each crevice. Before long I am lost in my own private primal experience, in a dream world where images come alive on rock, fires burn in the background and my own heartbeat keeps time with the distant drumbeats….
