Before our President elect was official, the current administration reacted to the knowing that they were almost out of power, by enacting measures to take Wolves off the Endangered species list, allowing power plants to operate near national parks, loosen regulations for factory farm waste and make it easier for mountaintop coal-mining operations. / I am agitated by all these efforts, however my greater concern is for the WOLF, as it was nearly eradicated here in the 20th century, remarkably recovered by sincere and persistent efforts, only to be threatened once again by the powers-that-be… As the Mourning Moon rises, we give thoughts to brother Wolf / whilst a mighty pen has warranted their sudden deaths to engulf A totem called upon for protection and strength to be taught / is in need of our right actions, not just words – to be fought From each sacred direction the mighty wolf pack calls / for their survival, as others’ face extinction with their fall From the Northern lights an airborne shooting hunt ensues / upon Ice-leapers’ lair, so a governors’ ego does not bruise In the east, paper stained with crude oil and blood / seals Dawn-treaders fate with powers’ arrogant flood To the south ignorance is bliss, to simply remove / Sun-chaser to another place with hunting skills to prove In the west, talk is cheap as habitat quickly disappears / so the Night-stalker fades into the shadows of souvenirs A pack of human voices is needed now to howl / in this eleventh hour, working together – on the prowl. My new wolf friend was determined to teach me how to howl after our shared lunch. He very “tenderly” took half of my sandwich from my offering hand with his mouth, lay it down on the ground and ate it layer by layer, slowly and savoringly, unlike my dog River, who would ALWAYS “wolf down” whatever is offered to her! :) So now he set out, just a few feet away, raised one front leg a tiny bit for emphasis and howled. I got down on all fours, copied the posture and did the same. Obviously he was a little dissatisfied with my learning so he repeated the whole thing another time. And this time he was happy with his pupil. What a patient teacher I had! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada

TKRosevear 2008 WOLF Song This shot is from the Julian Wolf Center for Science and Education in California, it was taken before the devastating fires in July of 2002, where a female Mexican wolf and her 3 pups were lost. Their mission is to increase the awareness and understanding of the importance of all wildlife by focusing on the Gray Wolf and it’s subspecies of Alaskan and Mexican Gray Wolves. Founded in 1977 and located in the Cuyamaca Mountains south of Julian, about 50 miles east of SanDiego, it also serves as a regional Biological Field Station teaching the role of predators within the context of their ecosystem. Dispel the FEAR of the “Big Bad Wolf”, it is a myth perpetuated by the greed of MAN raising domestic cattle and sheep for your dinner table… / /

Stenigot is one of the most unusual places you could ever visit… I wanted to capture something of the surreal ambience, howling wind, isolation and stark elemental beauty that I felt and experienced. The post processing of this shot was quite instinctive, I didn’t so much decide the outcome as let it flow from my fingers based on the memories and sensations I collected there… [I discovered another little HDR ‘tweak’ along the way, but that will remain my secret.]
