2007. Oil. 70×100cm / This painting started life as a small sketch of a house and gradually expanded to include more houses, gardens, trees and finally but most importantly, people. The lack of concern for true perspective, colour and form allows me more freedom in this. Saying what this painting is about is a little difficult, like trying to analyse dreams. But I do know it’s about how fragile life can be, about childhood and growing old.

Wandering through the back streets of the old town was heavenly, at every turn there were wonders to behold, the long things hanging outside the shop are actually candles.

Combination one room school house, church, community building, and town hall. These structures are scattered through out the Ozark Mountains, and the foothills of Arkansas. Sooooooo…... These types of scenes are very familiar to me, living here in the good ol’ natural state. My very first years of school began in a one room school house almost identical to this one, and it is now long gone.. When I look at this photograph, I can still see us all running, and playing in the school yard, and hear all of our laughter, and screaming. All the sounds of the children playing, as we went along in our merry, carefree younger days. I remember…........

The backstreets of Grimethorpe,an old Yorkshire mining town, home of the famous brass band. I was contemplating taking this shot as i wandered back from my lunch, then the old lady walked in front of me and down the street, that made it for me.

Old stables of the abandoned mining town of the Cerro del Hierro (“Iron Hill”) in Seville (Andalusia, Spain). They have lost all their roof but the place is a good one to practise photography :) It’s located in the Natural Park of the northern highlands of Seville, between the municipalities of San Nicolás del Puerto and Constantine. With an altitude of 800 meters above sea level, is one of the upper area of the southern edge of the plateau bordering the basin of the Guadalquivir river. This little painting is the result of an oil sketch I did when I was in Katoomba recently. I love how when you drive or walk around Katoomba (or the other villages of the upper mountains) you often turn a corner or crest a hill and you find yourself confronted by the most spectacular view. There are a few spots which I really love. Whenever I was on my way to work (or whatever), these glimpses would energise me for the day ahead… reminding me of where we were… in a City within a World Heritage National Park. The way that civilisation exists along a narrow plateau which gives way to mountains and valleys also fascinates me. I often feel that Mother Nature is being incredibly generous in allowing our towns to flourish here… although she does remind us who’s boss occasionally…! This is the view across South Katoomba from the Mountain Heritage Carpark at the top of Lovel St Katoomba. Oil on Canvas / 40.5×30.5
