The Baby Del House by RD Riccoboni The Baby del house on Coronado Island in San Diego Bay was built in 1887 by Mrs. Livingston. The theory about why it looks so similar to the Hotel del Coronado is that the Victorian house, built six months prior, was the training ground for the carpenters who built the hotel. The most fascinating thing about the Baby del is that is has only been on Coronado island since 1983. It was moved by boat from San Diego costing $120,000 and six month of planning to orchestrate the moving of the Victorian house from its Sherman Heights neighborhood, near Villa Montezuma, at 24th and J Streets, to its present site, which had been a tennis court. It is both a San Diego and Coronado landmark. The primary colors in my palette are derived from the colors in the original rainbow flag which represent sexuality, healing, sun, nature, art, harmony and spirit. The technique of my paintings consists abstract to realism while staying within my same color palette range. Sometimes I combine elements of both abstract art and realist art in my artwork, sometimes there is also a folk art and impressionism influence. My Subject matter tends to be portraits, of people, pets, places and things. Architectural portraits such as building and home portraits, street scenes both historical places and interesting structure make up a large section of my portfolio. Automobile portraits, I love classic muscle cars and some antique autos. Urban city life in my community makes up a large section of my art also, such as my pictorial commentary on gay culture, beach life and travel and finally landscape. I paint the experience through my art of where I live and places I travel. Having grown up in an old Victorian home, I love old buildings and history, and then mixed in with the everyday activity of the current neighborhood setting and modern color. Two of my favorite places near to where I live are Balboa Park and Old Town San Diego. I go out photograph my city all the time, taking hundreds of pictures, looking for just the right visual or story to portray on canvas back at my studio. – RD It is good to have an end to journey towards; / but it is the journey that matters in the end – Ursula Le Guin
The Baby Del House – Coronado Island – San Diego, California painting by RD Riccoboni. Impressionist style at the beach. A study in sunshine. The Baby del house on Coronado Island in San Diego Bay was built in 1887 by Mrs. Livingston. The theory about why it looks so similar to the Hotel del Coronado, down the street, is that the Victorian house, built six months prior, was the training ground for the carpenters who built the hotel. The most fascinating thing about the Baby del is that is has only been on Coronado island since 1983. It was moved by boat from San Diego costing $120,000 and six month of planning to orchestrate the moving of the Victorian house from its Sherman Heights neighborhood, near Villa Montezuma, asubject of another one of RD Riccoboni’s paintings, at 24th and J Streets, to its present site, which had been a tennis court. It is both a San Diego and Coronado landmark.
Taken on the morning of July 4th, 2008. The smoke from the California fires provided a spectacular display as the sun rose behind the castle styled tea house perched on top of the island in Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay.

View from Ulupalakua / Kahalewai / West Maui Hawai’i Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved I took this shot from a moving vehicle as Jacob and I were driving upcountry this evening at sunset. 30 January 2009 The Western name is West Maui mountains. / The Hawaiian name is Mauna Kahalewai [Ka-Hale-Wai means House of Water]. Another name is Hale Mahina, which means House of the Moon. / It is believed that these mountains are named for the Goddess Hina of the Moon. The East Maui mountains ancient name is Aheleakala [A-hele-a-ka-la]. The Western name is Haleakala means House of the Sun, named for the Sun God, La, and quite possibly named after the demi-god Maui-akalana, who slowed down the sun. More can be read about Maui in the ancient Hawaiian genealogical chant, Kumulipo Iao Valley is the most famous valley of this mountain range. The West Maui mountains are the second wettest spot in the world at 400 inches of rain per year. It is said that somewhere in Kahalewai there is a deep cavern filled with water and a passage way connected with the water cave. The West Maui Mountains or West Maui Volcano, known to the Hawaiians as Mauna Kahalewai, form a much eroded shield volcano that constitutes the western one-quarter of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. Kanaka Maoli are the Polynesian peoples of the Hawaiian Islands who trace their ancestry back to Marquesan and possibly Tahitian settlers (starting circa AD 400), precontact 1778. A shield volcano is a large volcano with shallowly-sloping sides. / The high point of the West Maui Volcano is Pu’u Kukui at 5,788 feet. The island of Maui is one of a chain of volcanoes and ancient underwater seamounts stretching nearly to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. The Hawaiian Islands and Emperor Seamounts were all formed by a hot spot in the earth’s mantle erupting onto the ocean floor and building massive shield volcanoes that would sometimes break the surface. Maui is the second youngest island in the Hawaiian Islands and consists of two volcanoes in the chain It is thought that West Maui Volcano was born 2 million years ago. It is now extinct and has begun the slow process of subsiding and eroding back into the sea. Haleakala is about a million years younger than its neighbor and is still considered active having erupted at least 10 times in the last 1000 years. However, it has entered the last phase of its life as a growing mountain, a last gasp rejuvenated phase that all Hawaiian volcanoes enter before they go extinct forever. Approximately 400,000 years ago Maui was much larger than it is today. Usually referred to as Maui Nui (“Big Maui”) it was made up of present day Maui, Moloka’i, Lana’i, and Kaho’olawe and was larger than the present day big island of Hawai’i. The subsiding of the island led to the separation of Moloka’i and Lana’i from Maui and Kaho’olawe about 300,000 years ago. About 150,000 years ago Lana’i and Moloka’i separated as did Kaho’olawe and Maui. It is thought that only 15,000 years remain before West Maui and East Maui (Haleakala) are split into two islands. This is the so called Deserted Village at Slievemore on Achill Island, Co Mayo. The ‘village’ consists of the ruins of two rows of stone houses and a tiny church. It has fantastic views over the Atlantic ocean, but the conditions are extremely harsh – I’d hate to have to grow anything in the wind and rain on the slopes of the mountain. And in fact, whoever once tried eventually gave up. It is so long ago that the inhabitants left that noone even remembers the name of the place. Only sheep and passing tourists can be found there now. / I recommend a black backing for this card.

The Light House at Tybee Island was constructed in 1732 on the orders by General James Oglethorpe, Governor of the 13th colony. It has been guiding mariners into the Savannah River for over 275 years.
Nearly missed this lovely inlet beyond a bridge on a bend when driving along the A865. Slowed down to look at some deer nearby and spotted this scene just off the road.
