Hosier Lane, CBD Melbourne
Rutledge Lane, Melbourne. FEATURED ON HOME PAGE:
My current favourite angle of Melbourne. Hosier Lane is FULL of collaborative art, it’s a real stand out faeture of this city, I tried to capture here the biggest chunck of the scene as i could.
Graffiti on a wall at the corner of Hosier and Rutledge Lanes, CBD Melbourne.
The mecca of Melbourne Graf artists or at least the best showcases.
Melbourne has some amazing graffiti and street art. This is, I think, Hosier Lane, in Melbourne CBD. A little maze of interlinking back lanes overflowing with excellent graffiti, stencils and street art. I’m not sure about putting this photo for sale, after all it’s not my art work! / However the same notions could be extrapolated regarding the architects, designers and builders of all my urban photography.
I came to Hosier Lane for the 2nd time to take this HDR shot – funny how this photo escaped me the first time I was here.

THE FORUM / MELBOURNE SOME INTERESTING FACTS The exterior matched the intricacies of the interior. At the Flinders Street/Hosier Lane corner, a minaret, said to be a copy of one standing on a Turkish mosque in Cairo, was featured. On the Flinders Street/Russell Street corner, a copper-domed clock tower rose 159 feet (48.5 meters) from street level. Around the clock tower, smaller minarets, together with pressed cement walls, were broken with ornate windows, lace-like balustrading, slender columns, receding balconies and towers all painted in bright, bold colours. Construction started with excavation to a depth of 47 feet (14.3 metres) below street level. 16,700 cubic yards (15,270 cubic meters) of earth and rock were removed. Total land area covered was 22,000 square feet (6,705 square meters). The frontage in Flinders Street occupied 121 feet (37 meters), 180 feet (55 meters) in Russell Street. An amazing 1,669,000 bricks were used in the construction. The main steel girder for the Dress Circle weighed 140 tons and spanned the theatre without obstruction. The roof was made of zinc.

I recently received a comment on this photo in flickr from someone who has taken a more recent shot of the blue girl. This is what she looks like now / This little alleyway is popular with local graffiti artists, and regularly goes through updates so I’m sure this visage is no longer quite the same now! I’d love to transport myself back there now and see what stands in its place. / Modifications with Gimp.

Hosier Lane Melbourne…
Lane way in Melbourne, graffiti art every where!!! be carefull @ night!!!! HaHa….
... And it looks like he borrowed Salvador Dali’s moustache as well ….! This shot was taken in Hosier Lane, in inner-city Melbourne, in July this year. It was a cold winter afternoon with rain and a biting wind. All of a sudden I looked up and noticed a beautiful, warm glow from the lamp suspended exactly halfway across the narrow, bustling lane. I literally stopped in my tracks and composed the shot to make the lamp the central feature. But by choosing my angle carefully, I was able to use this beautiful old building as a backdrop. Look carefully and you’ll notice that each of the three floors has a completely different look. Also, those wide windows show you just how grey the sky was. By reducing the focal length fractionally, I was able to include the dark silhouette on the right, with the distinctive balconies that stand out so clearly. Why? Because it just gives the photograph an extra dimension and endows it with the feel that this might have been an image shot more than a century ago ….. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/125 sec, ISO 400, focal length 108mm. Went on a little stroll around the city today to shoot a couple of laneways with Flamegirl for Laneway Magazine who requested some shots of this little spot. This is the same lane as shot in my Hosier Lane but up the other end facing the other way :D I’ve been using HDR sparingly lately but it helps to bring out so much character in these laneways that I simply can’t resist. This is also one of my first goes experimenting with the square format too! / Settings Canon 5D, 17-40mm f4 L USM. FL: 17 mm 1/160th of a second @ f4 (Multiple Exposures), ISO 800 No Filters Adobe Lightroom 2, HDR in Photomatix Pro & Stitched together in Adobe Photoshop CS4 Click here for my other images of laneways and graffiti Click here for my other images of Melbourne
Another image from this weeks late night stroll in back alleys off of Hosier Lane, in Melbourne’s CBD. The varying lighting and shadows helped to create mood which varied dependent upon the angle and direction of the shots. Quite eerie and daunting shooting this series alone, next time I must get someone to come along!!!!! This is a three shot HDR converted in Photomatix, shot with a Canon 400D – 17-85 lens. Want to see some other great shots of this place then visit Alistair Wilson’s link in the comments section…............. /
