One of my personal favorites. This picture taken in a rodeo (during the lasso tournament) in the south of Brazil. The cowboys are called “gauchos”, and this one is dressed typically. This type of large trousers are called “bombachas”. Captured at 300mm in negative film and then scanned.

Hanging on to a professional bucking HORSE for eight seconds is no small feat. / Taken at the Okotoks Pro Rodeo Sept 1/07 / SC work
Taken at the Exeter Rodeo, in Exeter Ont. Canada. Thanks for looking! =)smile /
Remake of photo previously removed with a little SC work. / Barrel racer at the Okotoks Pro Rodeo Sept/07.
At the Phillipsburg, Kansas 2007 Rodeo. Wish I had a larger file of it. I didn’t have a computer at the time and the file was made smaller to not take up too much space on my dad’s palm pilot. I should of have him save it to a cd but I don’t think he could of from work.
This is once again my sister and her horse doing what they love doing most… When I took this photo Kym was on her horse everyday, she has eased off a little since school started again. / Biscuit (the mare) has a fear of men, when she came to us she was skinny and no very friendly. It took Kym a short while to gain her trust and now she can do anything with Biscuit. She’s now a healthy weight, but still doesn’t like men though, we are still working on that.

Miss Rodeo Okotoks, Aaron Courchesne, looks so very regal on her gorgeous palomino as she helps to steer the stock out of the arena. / April 12/08 High River Senior Pro Rodeo. / SC work. NOVEMBER 2008 UPDATE Courtesy Okotoks Western Wheel! / Miss Rodeo Okotoks captures Canadian crown in Edmonton / She’s living her dream. / For Aaron Courchesne, Miss Rodeo Okotoks 2008, her dream was realized on Nov. 4 when she was crowned Miss Rodeo Canada 2009. / “I’ve been striving for this for about seven years, when I entered my first rodeo queen pageant,” she said. “Even if I wasn’t going to be queen I knew I was going to rodeo. I knew that it was something that is never going to change about me.” / Courchesne, 24, loves rodeo. She loves the spirit and camaraderie of the sport. / “It’s the only sport where, if your horse is hurt, you can jump on your competitor’s horse — they help each other so much.” / Her goal this year, as Miss Rodeo Canada, is to inspire young people. / “I want all kids to know that even if rodeo isn’t their passion, to find their passion and run with it. Never let anyone tell you to quit. If you want to do it, just go for it.” / As an ambassador for rodeo, and for Canada, Courchesne will put in her fair share of appearances across the country, in the United States and overseas. / She’ll attend more than 300 events over the year. / She’ll be educating the public, inspiring young minds and signing autographs, trying to motivate rodeoers and ensure the tradition of rodeo stays strong. / “You are judged on your speaking abilities, your horsemanship, their appearance and you take a written exam on rodeo knowledge.” / Courchesne had some help from her favorite equine. / “Everyone from Okotoks will remember my Palamino mare, Hope,” she said. “(Hope) was one of my queen horses, and I gave riding lessons on her and I barrel raced on her. She’s definitely one of my best horses.” / ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ /
Barrel Racing at St Paul Rodeo 2008 (in Oregon)
Instead of cowboy.. cowgirl.
Rodeo pickup riders have the crazy job of catching the broncs after the bronc rider has been bucked off, all while thundering around the dusty arena at a gallop. The color and action are intense – here, a red-shirted cowboy on a good-looking palomino mount leans over to grab the lead-rope on a liver saddle bronc.
A tribute to our equine friends each month.

Uncle Dan Purdy passed away in 2006. Mister Purdy was a life-long ranch hand on Ulupalakua Ranch, on the island of Maui, Hawaii. He is one of the men who made the Paniolo, or Hawaiian Cowboy legendary for cattle handling skills. I asked to make this portrait of him one day as I saw him riding his horse down the road, all dressed up. His was a gentleman to the end. His extended family still works and lives on the ranch today.

8 Second ride is what it takes to win. This cowboy made it! Sonoita, AZ’s 94th Annual Rodeo had wonderful weather, a great crowd, and some exciting events. I’m amazed that I actually captured a few of them. Burst photography is the way to go. OK, so I can’t leave well enough alone. Found radial blur in PS Elements 7 and thought it was perfect for this image. Then added a couple of texture layers underneath that and voila. Quarter horse.
