A reflection of me (as close to a self portrait as I want to come), in the eyes of a horse.

The incredible equine farms & stables of upstate New York; some of the finest horses in world come from there. On assignment last winter —while home-stewarding a much smaller family farm of “my own”, Eye saw this scene near the village of Millbrook & was struck by the arrangement of the fencing against the landscape: hence the title … Timeless.

Original digital photograph. Taken with a Sony Full HD 1080 Cyber Shot camera. Many people do not know (I didn’t until I went on this drive) that you can’t herd Buffalo, you drive them…the American Bison is our representation of the African Rhino…A full grown Male Buffalo can over turn a truck and kill a horse in the blink of an eye. I had it explained to me by one of the many professional drovers, that you have to make the “Lows” as they are called..think it is their idea to go in a certain direction… and you can’t push them like a herd of cattle…it is the hardest job on the face of this earth. A Cowboy can not get within 25 feet of the outside line because Buffalo have explosive tempers and pretty much hate horses. / Taking pictures of this drive was like filming an epic saga of history…it truly felt as if we were all in this time warp of 200 years ago. My husband and I were invited by the Gov. of South Dakota to help with the yearly Buffalo Roundup. This is an event that takes place every year to round up the 2000 plus herd of Buffalo of the Black Hills and take them over 25 miles to holding pens for vaccination, doctoring and culling. / This was the most awesome experience…all on horse back and photo opportunities of a lifetime. Like its cousin the Leafy Sea Dragon, the Weedy Sea Dragon is endemic to Australia. This individual is a large female, found about ten metres underwater at Botany Bay, Sydney.
I was a young fashion photographer’s assistant who had also photographed racehorses trained by my father. ITV heard the story and wanted to interview me with pictures of girls and horses. In this picture shot for Biba’s, a world famous boutique in Kensington High Street in the 60’s, I decided to combine them both. I borrowed the 20mm lens and the 250 exposure back from my boss, John Cowan, whose studio was used in the 1966 cult film Blow-Up and set off for Sussex. The 20mm lens had only just been introduced and was the first of it’s kind. I was invited by the BLM to photograph a gather of the wild horses at the Deep Creek Mountains in Tooele County Utah. In trying to prepare myself for what I was about to see I was surprised at how gentle and caring the BLM and the contractors handled the horses. They have a horse trained whose name is Judas who leads the wild horses through the chutes and into the holding pen. The BLM told me approx. 30 percent of the horses will be returned back to the wild after contraception and physicals. I don’t know the numbers exactly, the remaining horses will be adopted out and others will be sent to prisons where they will be gentled by prisoners and then used on the borders for border control. I still feel that the horses belong in the wild but have more of an understanding for why they have to be gathered. I will still sign every petition out there and still fight for the horses.
Found myself at a local Team Roping Event… / Cowboys and Cowgirls from all over Nevada, Utah and Arizona show up to try and claim the top prize. Much of the day is waiting in line to start your event… / For some reason I love to photograph from the back… / This is also an experiment in my effects..I wanted this capture to reflect the pent up energy of the Cowboys waiting in line trying to look casual but wired like a tight spring and exuding a vibrant energy. Another one down, like 15 to go, lol. One of the reasons i have been so absent. i feel bad, but i am really trying to get this book done. One drawing takes forever, getting the composition can take days, or longer, then starting the sketch. i started this in pencil on 2 May, 2009. Finished in pencil & started in Prisma colored pencils on 9 May (my brother Chris’ birthday), & just finished today, 22 May (my Dad’s birthday). i will take a slight break & hopefully have time to come around. Really missing you all, but i gotta keep cracking the whip, really hoping to get this book completed.
...am feeling full of Nectar today, this beautiful Lilium popped out today on the Patio… so thought I’d share it with you … my beautiful creative peepz lol!..The Archies sugar ....Nectar (nktr) / A sweet liquid secreted by plants as food to attract animals that will benefit them. Many flowers produce nectar to attract pollinating insects, birds, and bats. Bees collect nectar to make into honey. Nectar is produced in structures called nectaries. Some plants have nectaries located elsewhere, outside the flower. These provide a food source for animals such as ants which in turn defend the plant from harmful insects. Nectar consists primarily of water and varying concentrations of many different sugars, including fructose, glucose, and sucrose.Save the Flowers ...as is straight out of the camera Olympus fe 35/30 314 dpi f-stop 4.6 ISO-100 35mm 36 ...

This is an Appaloosa mare, taken in rural Southern Oregon, she is turning trying to avoid running into me sitting on a log in front of her. for some inexplicable reason, this photo which was one of the first I uploaded to RB, disappeared from my folio, so am uploading it again. / It was shot a very long time ago on 35mm film, when I was a polo groom, working on a property in Young, NSW. It was the most magic place for sunrises and sets and for very long gallops!! / Living and working in the country, rising with the sun and working with and around the cycles of nature, being in touch with the elements and creatures of the land is something I never want to forget or be too far away from.
I just love this fabulous & sweet pony lovers delight image! Yeah! It feels so good when I achieve a work like this & I also feel so blessed to have shared this special moment with these two lovers I captured the whole thing! I love the enchanted mood which this portrait offers freely…..giving without receiving! Smiles Leilani
