Ok, I know that my equine friends have kept me away from redbubble and other important areas of my life way too much lately but please indulge me one last joyful beaming over a personal triumph. Remember last month how thrilled I was with Mouse’s performance at the in-hand classes of our first horse show? Well, this month we both rode in our first horse show. A little building of the suspense here. I was so nervous and reluctant and waffling in the morning but my friends kept encouraging me and telling me to do it. So, I entered three classes. The first was strictly for gaited horses and there were only two entries, Mouse and me and a Tennessee Walker. Well, I was sooo nervous and I rode poorly and I let Mouse get too fast at the fox trot and she started pacing a bit…which unfortunately, the judge did see. So, we came in second in a two horse race -haha. I didn’t even collect the ribbon because I knew it was won by default. The next class, I shouldn’t have even been in, Western Pleasure. I have never ridden one handed and I didn’t do a very good job of it. I couldn’t get the reins even and finally just switched back to the two hands I am comfortable with. It was a large class and we didn’t even place:(. So, our final class was Favorite Gait which contains both gaited and ungaited horses. It was a large class as well and all of the entries had just beaten us in one of our two previous classes. Instead of discouraging me, that fact actually helped me to relax. As I stood in line at the gate where we entered the arena, I thought to myself, “Just riding today after our history of the last few years is a major accomplishment for both Mouse and me and I’m going to be proud of that and just relax and enjoy myself in this last class.” Which is what I did. I thought we did well but I was still expecting to come in dead last when we lined up before the judge. I was sitting there waiting for them to work their way through the six places so that we could leave the arena when the announcer said, “First place goes to Sande Elkins riding Mouse’s Funny Face J.” I nearly fell off the horse!! And I’m certain that my jaw literally hit my chest. And then everyone started cheering and the young girls at the barn who are mad about Mouse started chanting, “Mousie, Mousie!” as we made our victorious departure-ha. I’m still beaming today but when I showed Mouse the blue ribbon, she looked at it as if she was thinking, Is that all we get? I can’t even eat that.:)

He was more like ‘ah, so this is what happens…. what next?’ / Always looking for mischeif he even runs off with the saddle cloth after a ride just to get everyone running after him…
