  • We were hiking along a snow covered trail in Jasper National Park (Alberta Canada) and came across this outpost. Just had to shoot it. Featured on the RedBubble homepage on Dec 24, 2008 Taken with Canon Rebel and Sigma 75-300mm lens

  • 9×12 watercolor enhanced colored pencil / The American Rocky Mountain Horse is probably the latest addition to the world’s horse population. The registry was opened as recently as 1986, but since then there has been a steady development of this distinctive and attractive animals. Visually, it is not difficult to see the connection between the Rocky Mountain and the Spanish imports of early American history. Complete 2006

  • Dusk was approaching as I was setting up my tent after spending a day with the wild mustangs in the Pryor Mountains of Montana. The chill down the back of my neck was partially due to the cooling mountain air, and partially due to the feeling of being watched. As I was thinking about a beautiful white stallion that had taken his harem and run off, I suddenly heard a mustangs’ scream and the stomping of hooves. I whirled around, but nothing was there. Or was there?

  • “Coming Down From Black Mountain” is a signed, original, oil painting. The romance of the West, the Cowboy and Horses is a subject I always return to. I live both in Colorado and in Nevada, so I have an endless supply of personal photography that I draw from for my paintings. / Thank you for viewing my art. VIEW mygallery / View susan’szazzle /

  • This was a very lucky shot. We had come across one group of these beautiful creatures near Yarrangobilly in Kosciusko National Park just after sunrise only to miss the shot because the camera wasn’t attached to the tripod. I was quite disappointed as you don’t see brumbies everyday and this was the first time I had ever seen them. A bit later on we were driving down a dirt road just past Kiandra in the snowy mountains looking for one of the old huts, when my daughter yelled at me to look at up, and there on the hill beside us were these three. I managed to roll my car down a bit to see more of them and got this one shot out of the car window before they ran off.

  • Horses in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountain National Park, USA. > Horses and mules have had a presence in the Cove for well over 150 years. They’ve pulled wagons, hay mowers, buggies, carts, sleds, and plows. Horseback riding is a thrill for visitors today, a necessity for the pioneers of Cades Cove. I love the quiet of the morning as the fog lifts over the valley. The horses seem so peaceful grazing on the valley floor. Other works in the Cades Cove Collection: About Cades Cove: Cades Cove (formally known as Tuckaleechee Cove) is found in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, USA. Cades Cove / was a working farm valley until the 1930’s when the National Park was formed. The Park Service has attempted to recreate the 19th century feel of this farming valley and preserve it for future generations. Before the first white settler arrived on the scene, Cades Cove had been a part of the Cherokee Indians’ domain. Abrams Creek and Abrams Falls are features named for a prominent Cherokee chief named “Old Abram” who at one time lived in a village at Chilhowee on the Little Tennessee River. According to tradition, Old Abram’s wife was named Kate, and Cades (Kate’s) Cove was named after her. Please enjoy these other images:

  • Country Relaxin’ EarIier this year, ventured up to Guanella Pass and onwards to the Ghost Town of Como, a literal timewarp that harks back to the wildwest, fully intact and persevered, few folks still live here. It is high up, probably close to 10,000 feet, and this winter has been VERY bad in the high country. In fact just last week they interviewed a resident of Como and she talked about how the town was totally cut off of supplies…which made me right away think of the horses there. I have photographed these horses the last 5 years now, and I always find them so friendly…not your typical horses, these are true and tried working horses…where Cowboys still exist and the west still lives. Upon entering Como, I was shocked at the snowbanks, over 20 feet high, and they were plowed out finally from a construction crew using Caterpillars. And low and behold, so was the feeding field for the horses….... :) I was happy they were ok, as I was quite concerned, as they have become kind of a good friend to me and my camera. More on Como can be found here and here and it’s history as a Wild West town Thoughts welcomed / —-John
