“The eyes of this friendly horse captivated me. Keeping a short distance from my face, he looked at me intently with an inquiring eye. The afternoon sunlight was golden and bathed his coat in a sheer layer. The mane flew softly around his pretty face while he demanded to be given a carrot with steady hoof stamps in front of me. / / I had no carrots, yet a friendly pat on his velvety muzzle earnt me a swift amicable slurp from his soft lips. I took close-ups at his handsome looks. / / This frame portrays the beautiful colour, hues and iridescence of the mane and lashes, all set aglow in the warm sunlight.” / / Artist statement / My photographs are not enhanced; they represent the true nature and colours of the subjects as captured by the lens. Speckled pony foal – I believed it was a Shetland pony, as it was with its mother at the time and she looked like a Shetland pony. However, the Shetland Pony experts in the UK have emailed me to tell me there is no such thing as spotted Shetlands so there we are! ;o) All I know is I just wanted to pick up the cute critter and take him home with me. The beauty of spirited horses.
This horse is named Murphy. He belongs to my cousin. I once rode him behind Split Mountain, which is west of Dupuyer, Montana. When I visit my cousin, I like to go out and take photos of her horses as they roam freely across the ranch. In this moment, Murphy came to the creek for a drink. I loved the way he was contemplating his own image. And here is that moment before his muzzle actually touches the water, there’s a surface tension… a waiting…a feeling of something about to happen. I found myself waiting expectantly for the ripples that would soon form. Lipica stud farm is the only unified, intact medieval farm estate in our country. The breeding of karst horses and the Lipizzaner breed started more intensively after 1580, when the Habsburg Archduke Charles bought the older estate of the bishop of Trieste. The foundation of the Lipizzaner breed is the indigenous Karst horse, refined with Spanish, Napolitan and Arabian horses. A fast and teachable horse was bred for the needs of the court, military and the Spanish Riding School. The karstic conditions, stony area and north “bora” wind were especially suitable for developing stamina and resilience in the horses and were therefore chosen intentionally. The stallions are normally darker, and with age the horses take on their characteristic white colour. In Lipica there are six basic bloodlines of stallions: Conversano, Favory, Maestozo, Neapolitano, Pluto, Siglavy, and more than a dozen bloodlines of mares.
The wild horses of the Red Desert roam across the landscape, and I rarely see the same band twice, but I would certainly recognize this stallion that I call The Jester… what a flashy guy! Canon 40D, f10, 1/400, focal length 250mm (that’s pretty close for wild horses). Featured in Those Colorful Paints (APHA) and Pintos, October 2009 – thank you so much!
This is an awesome chocolate horse I see in a beautiful pasture out on a back road in Amherst, Virginia. I have no idea what breed he is…but he always comes up to the fence to see me. I must have said something really funny to him this time! He seems to have had a good laugh over it. :)) / Taken with my Canon Powershot SX110 IS PLEASE VIEW LARGE FEATURED IN PLAYFUL PHOTOGENIC ANIMALS / FEATURED IN EYE CONTACT / /
