I love hornets, I don’t like being around them but I’ve always thought that there are much worse jobs if you have to be reincarnated as an insect. / Nobody messes with a hornet. I was thinking of the Book of Kells when I got the idea for this. When it comes to military aviation photography, shots like these are just “it” as far as I’m concerned. Look at that vapor around the trail edge of the wing, is that not awesome?

My original is graphite pencil on watercolour paper. Been sitting on it for a while and finally gotten around to putting him on a shirt. You won’t see it even in larger view, but every part is triangulated, as in an architectural spaceframe.

The FA/18 Super Hornet takes off at the 2009 Avalon Airshow another spectacular display. You can see the full afterburner in use for take off. Best Viewed Large. / When it is viewed large, you can see some people on the roads behind the Super Hornet. / They are the cheap seats, look closely, you may see some bubblers there :-)

A composite of an airshow picture and a recent harvest moon. I don’t normally do composites but I guess a change is as good as a rest. LOL. I’d like to do a sacred ibis against that moon – I have one so i’ll try that next. Let me know what you think when/if you view this one. Image captured during the Open House at the Navy Dare Bombing Range near Wanchese, NC. The entire day was simply incredible, the best birthday I ever had. The F/A-18 pilots where bombing targets near a mock Iraqi City. Since they had an Open House, the tower would request that if the pilots had a little fuel to spare, if they wouldn’t mind to do a couple of extra passes for the spectators. Some of them literally put on a private airshow for us. It was awesome! Added little bonus in this shot is the commercial aircraft at high altitude visible near the 3 sensors (right side of the image).

VIEW LARGE ON BLACK I think this is a black and yellow Mud Dauber. (If you know different let me know :) ) Sceliphron caementarium They are solitary insects that build nests out of mud in sheltered locations, frequently on man-made structures such as bridges, barns, open porches or under the eaves of houses. These nests are not aggressively defended, and stings are rare. The black and yellow mud dauber’s nest is comprised of a series of cylindrical cells that are plastered over to form a smooth nest that may attain nearly the size of a human fist. After building a cell, the female wasp captures several spiders. The captured prey are stung and paralyzed before being placed in the nest, and then a single egg is deposited on the prey within each cell. The wasp then seals the cell with mud. After finishing a series of cells, she leaves and does not return. Eventually, the hatching larva will eat the prey and emerge from the nest. There are some 30 other species of Sceliphron that occur throughout the world, though in appearance and habits they are quite similar to S. caementarium. S. caementarium is widespread in Canada, the United States, Central America and the West Indies, and has been introduced to many Pacific Islands (including Australia, Hawaii and Japan), Peru and Europe, where it has become established in the western Mediterranean Basin.
