I’ve always heard there was gold at the end of a rainbow, but this isn’t what I had in mind.

Dainty little purple flowers amongst green leaves.
Some of my favorite regional landscape elements are field rows, a kind of organic circuitry that run on the language of irrigation. These rows often create concentric outlines or parallels which follow any contour of the land which falls in their path. Whether holding the new season’s fresh green tips or the signs of last year’s bounty, their geometry makes for some amazing scenes. A favorite technique of mine is to take a relatively ‘busy’ scene like this one and create the feel of minimalist intent by selectively positioning a few key elements.

A group of sunflowers growing wild beneath a barb-wire and wood fence in rural southern Alberta, near Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are annual plants native to the Americas, that possess a large inflorescence (flowering head). Sunflower stems can grow as high as 3m (10 ft), and the flower head can reach 30 cm (11.8 in) in diameter with large edible seeds. What is usually called the flower is actually a head (formally composite flower) of numerous florets (small flowers) crowded together. The outer florets are the sterile ray florets and can be yellow, maroon, orange, or other colors. The florets inside the circular head are called disc florets, which mature into what are traditionally called “sunflower seeds,” but are actually the fruit (an achene) of the plant. The inedible husk is the wall of the fruit and the true seed lies within the kernel. / The sunflower is the state flower of the US state of Kansas.

An American Robin stands in the short green grass with a mouthful of worms, freshly pulled from the ground. Captured in Edward’s Gardens, the gardens of the Toronto Botanical Society, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Taken with a Canon Digital Rebel. The American Robin Turdus migratorius is one of the best-known birds in North America. It was given its name by the early settlers, who thought that, with its reddish breast, it resembled the English Robin. However, the American Robin is a thrush, not a robin, and except for the colour of its breast, it does not look like the small brown European bird. The American Robin is the largest thrush in North America. The adult measures about 25 cm long and weighs about 77 g. In addition to its cinnamon-rufous to brick-red breast, the American Robin has a black head, white eye-rings, yellow bill, black and white streaked throat, and grey back. The male is generally more brightly coloured than the female.
