Hopetoun Falls in the Victorian Otway Rainforest..Must go back – like now!! – now that the water is flowing nicely as it won’t be like that for long…Our long hot dry Summer is almost upon us and we photographers have to make the most of the seasons.

Along with Mackenzie Falls in the Grampians, Hopetoun Falls are probably the most photographed waterfall in Victoria. A popular tourist stop they are reached after a short although steep walk and tend to flow quite well year round. This is another waterfall I have visited and photographed many times but on this particular occassion the waterflow was perfect being enough to look nice and flow in distinct bands but not so much that the distinct bands merged into one. A beautiful spot in the Otways, Victoria, Australia. For more pictures from this area check out my The Otways gallery. The rain forest area of the Otway Ranges has some of the most spectacular waterfalls and lush fern covered walks. / They do require some effort to access, particularly the walk back up, but they are magnificent locations to visit.

On a wet and rainy day there is no better way to spend it than under the canopy or in front of a waterfall. When shooting landscapes it is hard to describe to viewers the conditions faced or what was required to “Get the shot”. I took this shot in Spring and the water in these streams is still very cold from winter. In order to get the best view of the waterfall required getting wet. After a 2 minute exposure I got out of the water and I couldn’t feel my feet. The worst thing is the pin and needles feeling as the blood warms them back up.

Hopetoun Summer Fair in the grounds of Hopetoun House, near South Queensferry, Scotland. Hopetoun House, one of the most splendid examples of Georgian architecture in Britain is the traditional residence of the Earl of Hopetoun (the Marquess of Linlithgow). It was built in 1699 and was designed by William Bruce, and extended in 1721 by William Adam. The house is located near South Queensferry to the west of Edinburgh, Scotland. Set in 150 acres of rolling parkland with extensive woodland walks, breathtaking vistas over the River Forth and a deer park, the magnificent interiors boast fine paintings, original furnishings and décor, tapestries and objects d’art with Aubusson tapestries and fabulous chandeliers in the Ballroom. Part of the House is still lived in today by the present Marquess and his family. The House, however, is owned and managed by an independent, charitable trust created in 1974 by the current Marquess and his father in order to preserve the House with its historic contents and surrounding landscape for the enjoyment and education of the public for all time. A shot I took while in Victoria recently, they haven’t had all that much rain so the rainforests and waterfalls were a little dry, I quite like this shot of Hopetoun Falls though :) - paul / http://www.paulpichugin.com
