This woman is a victim of a seemingly never ending war in southern congo. She has suffered sexual violence (rape) so severe it has rendered her incontinent. She now exists purely as a result of a courageous charity called Heal Africa, and indeed her own inner strength and faith. I asked her if I could take her portrait and she stood up (which must have been painful), straightened her back and stared straight down the lens. No stopping to straighten her scarf, no preening, no fear. Just an honesty so raw, so uninhibited and so rare, I caught my breath and thought I’d never breath again. I was totally overpowered by her intensity. After I took the shot and showed it to her she smiled and thanked me. It still gives me a shiver to look at it now. HEAL Africa calendar available now!!! This is Hope my Lurcher, on a snowy febuary day in 2007, she wasn’t that keen on the weather but did oblige me with this quirky shot. I have another Lurcher called Grace as well as Rubicon and Renegade the Ferrets who complete the team, Hope has the nose for finding quarry and Grace has the speed to fill my freezer. Here are the two dogs playing in the snow.

On Wednesday 13 February 2008, the Federal Australian government will begin the process of saying ‘sorry’ to our indigenous population. / Primarily for the forced removal of aboriginal children from their parents. These children were then put in orphanages or white foster families. / The individuals involved have come to be known as the ‘stolen generation.’ / This Government is the first one to agree to say ‘sorry’ for the events of the past which have permanently scarred relations between indigenous and european/celtic Australians. / It is considered by many to be vital to the healing process for all Australians. / I for one think it’s great.

My origami calendar / / Just one sheet makes a big difference; / One sheet that can make over 2000 cranes. / Each crane a step closer to a better world; / Each piece a step closer to peace. Each square in the grid paper is 5×5mm; and to be exact, there were 2028 full squares in the paper When I was in grade 5 our teacher read “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes” to our class. Sadako Sasaki was infected with leukemia. She spent her days folding cranes and making wishes upon them; wishing for her health and for a more peaceful world (the quote above is my writing inspired by the story of the thousand paper cranes). This concept was originally created in 2008, and photographed without a tripod. But now I have a tripod and decided to re-shoot this again and re-uploaded it on September 6, 2009. 2008. Age 21. “Glancing up at the stars I feel comforted by the enchanting tapestry; a beautiful contrast of sparkling silvers attached to a black sky. It is darkness tantalized with mystery, and shares the emptiness I feel in my heart.” Ready to Die… Thank you for looking.

“The LORD your God is with you, / he is mighty to save. / He will take great delight in you, / he will quiet you with his love, / he will rejoice over you with singing.” “The sorrows for the appointed feasts / I will remove from you; / they are a burden and a reproach to you. At that time I will deal / with all who oppressed you; / I will rescue the lame / and gather those who have been scattered. / I will give them praise and honor / in every land where they were put to shame. At that time I will gather you; / at that time I will bring you home. / I will give you honor and praise / among all the peoples of the earth / when I restore your fortunes / before your very eyes,” / says the LORD. / ~Zephaniah 3:17-20 Stock Credits: / Texture by http://inthename-stock.deviantart.com/ / Horse by http://absurdus.deviantart.com/ / Woman by http://mizzd-stock.deviantart.com/ / Background by http://anarasha-stock.deviantart.com/
