Ophelia woke up exceptionally early this morning and took flight to Mount of A Thousand Dreams. Legend has it that thousands had visited this Mount and returned to their homes with renewed sense of hope for their dreams. Ophelia chose a spot near one of the Mount’s cliffs and set her sight on the vast landscape ahead of her. “What beautiful mountains and valleys!” Ophelia cried out in awe of what was before her and what followed immediately was a revelation revealed by her heart! In that moment of truth, Ophelia understood that none of us are meant to stay on a peak forever. There are new exploits, new worlds and discoveries that await us. Even as one has triumphed over the mountain terrains and conquered peaks, one also has to humbly make the descent and walk through the valley experiences in life in order to be on the other mountain where new things await us. With this, Ophelia’s resolve was greatly strengthened. (An artwork that’s dedicated to all who are going through the ups and downs of life in one way or another :D)

Honoring intuition, using discernment, outsmarting deception and trusting first impressions are some of the ‘medicine’ traits of the OWL. / The ‘Medicine’ of TRUTH…like the invisible owls you hear at night, your awareness in the midst of blackness, perceives reality. In the night you find illumination. Oh yes, the night is dark, but the world is still real for those who see with their intuitive side. / My dear sister Judi, as you learn to trust your clairvoyant nature, you learn that truth flows through you, much the same way silent OWL glides through the night. Honor this ability to serve CREATION…. My husband came in from outside, quite giddy with this discovery – a Great Horned Owl in one of our many Pine Trees surrounding the ponds that he was cleaning debris from. What a gift to be able to photograph her in the daylight hours, besides seeing her after discussing the medicine of her truths. As is photograph taken 2/18/09. WindOwl Eyes of Truth

Although hunting occurs mostly at night, this owl is diurnal as well as nocturnal and Its daylight hunting seems to coincide with high-activity periods of voles, its preferred prey. There are a large number of Townsend’s Voles on this area of marshland. The Short-eared Owl tends to fly only a few feet above the ground until it it swoops down on to its prey feet-first. I have often seen three or four of these Owls hunting over this area at the same time. Best viewed large. Canon 20D / 1/250sec f8 ISO 400
I live about 20-30 minutes west of downtown St. Louis in a very old community with century old homes and giant trees. Even though it is a very populated area, we often see fox, deer, hawks, coyotes and owls. Very early around 4:00 AM we can hear the owls calling to one another. In the Spring and Fall when we have our windows open, we are many mornings woken from sleep by an owl that likes to sit on top of our house. This is a 7×5 inch rough marker, pencil and chalk pastel on 60 lb. illustration paper. I tried to keep it loose.

The owls that belong to the genus “Asio” are known as eared owls as they have tufts of feathers that resemble mammals ears. The “ear” tufts may not always be visible but the Short-eared owl will display them when in a defensive pose. The word flammeus is Latin for “flaming, or the color of fire”. Short-eared Owls are found in open country, marshlands and grasslands and this little beauty was photographed on the Nanaimo River Estuary, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.
