hoopoe (lat. Upupa epops) sitting on a branch.
This lovely bird spent quite a long time in our Hotel Garden in the south-west of the island. Clearly it was digging for insects. But I was delighted when it raised its decorative crest! Taaken with my Olympus SP550UZ
Another bird ive finally got some photos of,although they could be better.Not sure where they originate from,but this hoopoe was in the desert part of paignton zoo.They have lovely colours and markings,and a crest that lifts up to look a bit like a mohican,and a curved beak.

Eurasian Hoopoe – Upupa epops epops – a fairly common resident bird here in the UAE – the long beak is used to dig grubs and other creatures from the ground - have these guys occasionally in my garden they are a real treat - when excited the crest fully inflates. This one is in Safa Park – Dubai.

This hoopoe appeared in our local area and stayed around for two or three weeks. It was down on the coast and lots of people went to see it. As a result it became quite confiding giving good photographic opportunities.
This was taken in Johannesburg. The African Hoopoe is a bird about the same size as a starling. The height of the African Hoopoe is about 26 cms and its weight is about 57 gms You will find that the male African Hoopoe plumage and colours are different to that of the female African Hoopoe Head is cinnamon. / Eye is brown. / Bill is black. / Throat is cinnamon. / Back is cinnamon. / Legs are grey. / This bird has normally proportioned leg length. Main diet items for this bird … / The African Hoopoe feeds on the ground mainly on invertebrates Breeding and nesting habits for this bird … / The African Hoopoe is monogamous unless its mate dies. In the event of a partner dying Upupa africana will seek out a new mate The nesting habit of African Hoopoe is to create the nest in a hole in a tree trunk. The bird lays eggs which are blue in colour and number between 4 to 7 Habitat and flocking behaviour for this bird … / The preferred habitats for African Hoopoe are: woodlands and grasslands You will not see African Hoopoe in flocks.
