  • Cheerful honeybee in a patch of flowers / All purpose greeting card – birthday, Valentines (Bee my honey..) etc.

  • A large percentage of the world’s honeybees have been MIA lately. Nobody knows for sure what the causes are, and we are just beginning to grasp what the effects in long term may be, but I am absolutely certain of one thing – this can’t be good news for Winnie The Pooh! This was my first project for my Digital Illustration class with David Hylton. Pen & Ink drawing, scanned into Photoshop, then colored in using different textures from photographs. Turned out to be a pretty big hit among my peers :)

  • Bee captured in mid-flight, flying with his tongue out.

  • Thanks for dropping by. / Garden Beast VII

  • Apis florea - the honey produced by these tiny wild bees is highly sought after and may bring as much as $50$100 (US) for a liter jar. These guys live in the window well of my house here in Al Ain City – they move the hive periodically but stay in the same area - I currently have about 3 of these hives around my house here in the UAE. / Frequently people will go through neighborhoods following the little bees to try to find their hives. I have had several folks wanting to cut the hives at my house - they say they leave part of it and the bees will rebuild it, But hey - they built it let them keep it - so they are safe at my house. • The honeybee teaches about community and harmony. One lesson we can take from this is that the well-being of any community is dependent on the health and contribution of each of its members. One member cannot take on all the responsibilities, nor can one sit back and reap all the benefits without harming the community in a negative way. Another lesson is that sometimes one can work too hard, ignoring the others in the community who can contribute, risking their health from stress and depleted health. Think of the classic workaholic. Being part of a community means knowing you cannot do it all, and asking for help when it is needed. It also means to step up and help out those who need it. We can also learn from the honeybee about conserving and preparing for the future. By balancing working roles, the hive (the community) can run efficiently and create a harmonious living environment. To the Ancient Egyptians, honeybees were believed to be the tears of the sun god Ra and honey was believed to be a symbol of resurrection and protected against evil spirits. In Ancient Greece the honeybee was thought to be messengers for the gods. The Priestesses of the Oracle in Delphi were sought to answer questions about the future and past. The Priestesses sat on three-legged stools near a spot where sweet-smelling fumes rose up through an omphalos stone, which was hollow and shaped similar to a bee hive. The exterior of the omphalos stone was carved with the images of honeybees. The Honeybee was sacred to the Celtic goddess Brigid, who kept an orchard in the Otherworld, which was visited by bees. • The Honey Bee / In the springtime, joyous springtime, / When the birds begin to sing, / And we hear the murmuring brooklets, / Then the bees are on the wing. / When the long, cold days are over / Bees are out to sip the dew / And the nectar from the clover, / Buttercups and daisies blue. / / Supers placed above the beehive / For the honey bee to find, / Will be filled if showers are given / To the flowers of every kind. / Then the bees are kind and gentle / “Take it hog,” they seem to say; / “We will work again the harder / After the next rainy day. / / “And we’ll fill again the super, / We don’t mind with you to share, / Early morn will find us busy / Gathering honey everywhere. / We just gladly gather honey, / And the wax from off our back / We produce, now is’nt it funny, / No material do we lack. / / “For our queen cells we have polen, / Any egg a queen may be, / From the proper food and cover, / We produce a queen, you see. / If some drones we wish for mating, / Other food we must supply, / Just the food we give while waiting / For their hatching by and by.” / / “But when frost on field and hillside, / In the autumn kills the flower, / And in vain we search for honey, / In each glen and leafy bower, / Then in every hive is stationed / Guards to watch our winter’s store, / For if you would rudely take it, / We would search in vain for more. / / “And we sting with all our fury, / Take our honey if you dare, / For we want to keep from starving / In the winter, so beware.” / There’s a moral we may gather / From the busy bee for all, / Gather food stuff in the summer, / And protect it in the fall. __Nettie Squire Sutton.
