  • This woman is a victim of a seemingly never ending war in southern congo. She has suffered sexual violence (rape) so severe it has rendered her incontinent. She now exists purely as a result of a courageous charity called Heal Africa, and indeed her own inner strength and faith. I asked her if I could take her portrait and she stood up (which must have been painful), straightened her back and stared straight down the lens. No stopping to straighten her scarf, no preening, no fear. Just an honesty so raw, so uninhibited and so rare, I caught my breath and thought I’d never breath again. I was totally overpowered by her intensity. After I took the shot and showed it to her she smiled and thanked me. It still gives me a shiver to look at it now. HEAL Africa calendar available now!!! • Mr Sir and I live in the same place. Not the same apartment number but one wall away. He’s not my cat and I’m not his human so I don’t want any flack about people starting to look like their pets! It just happens to be that we are the only two black things in the complex. Naturally he looks up to me [because he’s short] for social guidance since I’m the senior member of our unofficial duo. And I try to keep him straight about stuff like the proper hair/fur dye for pesky gray whiskers and how to talk to women without having a hand down the front of your pants. (He’s got that one down since he doesn’t wear pants but I still watch him to make sure he doesn’t do any backsliding). Mr Sir isn’t his full name and I can’t remember what it is. Something like ‘Mr Sir Rudolph the 14th’ maybe. He answers to just the “M” and “S” sounds so you can call him “Ms” and he’ll answer. And boy will he answer! This hairy furball talks more than a 12-year old girl with permission to use the home phone. And like humans, he has dozens of sounds/words and uses them all for maximum effect. Hunger? Here come the whine that will make a Siamese want to kill him. Bored? Every hear a cat grumble to itself? Disquieting to say the least. “Hello! I wanna visit!” As clear as a human child learning to talk, you look at him in wonder. Well, this week, Mr Sir made the leap from neighbour to houseguest. I come home and the single ‘mew’ is waiting at my door. Why? Did he get mixed up and think I was his owner (a Caucasian female at least 25 years younger than I) or forget what his apartment number is? Hands full, I have a choice: put down everything and pacify him until he gets bored and grumbles walking away, or; open the door and watch him race inside before me. Until he rips up something, fails to talk when he needs to go outside, or fights me for food, I guess I can stand a visitor for about 15 minutes while he explores and talks to me about how messy a housekeeper I am. Ungrateful. Simply ungrateful. Soon the warnings will be in the newspapers, the radio, the Internet, and the television. Mr Sir who’s sorta like that ‘indoor/outdoor’ carpet and covers the floor in both places, will be sequestered to his proper home and left to exercise his vocabulary upon everyone within earshot. It’s not his fault but it’s another variation of “Strange Fruit” so being black has its serious and unique risks. While I won’t be swinging from a lynching tree cuz I’m a ‘black cat’ (musical slang for a jazz musician), Mr Sir could be because Halloween is coming and there are people (who shouldn’t even be called ‘people’) who do terrible things to black cats. Mr Sir won’t be visiting for a while as he adjusts badly to becoming an ‘inside only’ feline. And I won’t have to fight him for the right to come into my own apartment first (or not to bat my keys in the doorknob or attack the mantis I’m shooting, but that’s another story). We will be forced apart for a bit but that’s OK. He may be horrifically annoyed I get to be outside and he doesn’t but he doesn’t know about “strange fruit” and I hope he never learns. Some disasters need to be keep ‘human only’. After all, why should a talking cat have to talk about crap like that??? PS I actually thought I took this shot with my former ‘pocket rocket’: Olympus IR-500. But looking back at the files I see it came from the lens of my Nikon D80 at its closest focal point of 18mm! I obviously didn’t want to use flash for multiple reasons (not the least of which is animals have such reflective eyes that flashes make them hideous). So on full manual, I pulled off this shot in incandescent lighting from the front and the careful addition of some ISO and on-board noise reduction. While Mr Sir is amazing calm when warm and sleepy, I still shot him at high speed and the camera’s sharpest setting (most VIVID) to be sure I didn’t get any blur while capturing every nuance of his face and fur. This shot is as honest and accurate a shot can be of this great feline. There was enlargement for uploading but nothing more regarding editing than a bit of cropping done to make it more intimate. In the full sized shot, the image is slightly larger than 1 to 1 macro as measured by manually comparing Mr Sir’s actual eyes to the larger Red Bubble image of his eyes. Any closer and his breath would have fogged the lens (and turned my stomach). LOL! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ / 50% of any profit made from the sale of this piece will go directly to the buyer’s choice between PAWS, PETA, and the SPCA.

My biggest pet peave are liars, and always has been. The artwork depicts how a lie can go on to exponentially effect the lives of others to whom the lie is passed. / / The greatest example currently is the war in Iraq, which was started from a lie to the American public by it’s leader that Iraq had stockpiled ‘weapons of mass destruction’ and intended to use them. This one lie has devastated families and ruined economies across the globe. / / The greatest thing I respect in an individual is their ability to be honest, as then I can grant them the trust that all other things in the relationship will bloom from. So always remember this quotation, as well as, another old adage that says ‘The truth shall set you free!’. / / This fractal artwork was created in Apophysis. The original is 6000×6000 pixels at 300 pixels per inch. The fractal gradient was created with ApoMap, a gradient editor commonly used with Apophysis. • Men Talk
    by Anthea Slade

A sand fly, large and black, landed on Dylan’s red nose and stung him. He slapped his nose. ‘Ouch!’ He shook his white hair, the colour…

MEN TALK featured in Anger Management 18-8-09 / MEN TALK featured in CORE on the 13-8-09 Caution A short story. / A dialogue. / Written by a woman. / Through the eyes of two men. / About their two women. 12 years it has taken me to release this short story to the eyes of the public. I have had this short story sitting in private viewing for the past three weeks waiting for the courage to put this one out there. Ushna and her fabulous group has given my humble short story voice and recognition. This is one of my most valued features. / Thank you. Voice has been in my life a central theme. When I was at University studying Masters in Adult Education, I studied Voice and its implications in Women Studies and Autobiography and Life Long Learning. I was interested in giving voice to women in my first Autobiography Two Voices Two Women, a dialogue between my mother and I. And in my second autobiography, My life of love, loss and learning a voice to my love of all the important men in my life from father to teacher to lover to mentor to muse. With Men Talk I wanted to do something quite different and write a short story not only through the voice and eyes of one man but two men. And I wanted to write through their voice about their women. This was an exciting challenge and I have always held this little story close to me and now after all these years have brought it out to the public. I have read much and studied the men’s movement and men’s perspective as much as I have studied women’s movements and perspectives. So I just want to thank my friends on RedBubble and Ushna for allowing me this wonderful platform to bring forward not only my poems that I am writing now but for also allowing me to share those pieces of my writing history that no one has ever seen before. With Love, Anthea

  • Wood Duck at Oregon Zoo, Portland, OR. The Wood Duck or Carolina Duck (Aix sponsa) is a medium-sized perching duck. A typical adult is about 48 cm (19 in) in length with an average wingspan of 73 cm (29 in). This is about three-quarters of the length of an adult Mallard. It shares its genus with the Asian Mandarin Duck. The adult male has distinctive multi-colored iridescent plumage and red eyes. The female, less colorful, has a white eye-ring and a whitish throat. Both adults have crested heads. When swimming, wood ducks bob their head back and forth in a jerking motion, which makes them easy to spot. Their breeding habitat is wooded swamps, shallow lakes, marshes or ponds in eastern North America, the west coast of the United States and western Mexico. They usually nest in cavities in trees close to water, although they will take advantage of nesting boxes in wetland locations if available. The wood duck tends to fly for prolonged periods of time after reproducing. Their personality is shy and skittish. / Females typically lay between 9 and 14 eggs. However, if nesting boxes are placed too close together, females may lay eggs in the nests of their neighbors, which may lead to nests which may contain as many as 40 eggs and unsuccessful incubation, a behavior known as “nest dumping”. They prefer nesting over water so the young have a soft landing, but will nest up to 150 yards (140 m) away from the shoreline. The day after they hatch, the young climb to the nest entrance and jump to the ground. The baby ducks can swim and find their own food by this time.
