Homomonument, Amsterdam Part of a monument comprising three triangles representing past, present and future. Designed by Karin Daan, 1987. The sign reads “Commemorates all women and men ever oppressed and persecuted because of their homosexuality. / Supports the International Gay and Lesbian Movement in their struggle against contempt, discrimination and oppression. / Demonstrates that we are not alone. / Calls for permanent vigilance.”
The term gay was originally used, until well into the mid-20th century, primarily to refer to feelings of being “carefree,” “happy,” or “bright and showy”; it had also come to acquire some connotations of “immorality” as early as 1637. The term later began to be used in reference to homosexuality, in particular, from the early 20th century, a usage that may have dated prior to the 19th century. In modern English, gay has come to be used as an adjective, and occasionally as a noun, that refers to the people, practices, and culture associated with homosexuality. By the end of the 20th century the word gay was recommended by major style guides to describe people attracted to members of the same sex. At about the same time, a new, pejorative use was visible in some parts of the world. In the UK, US and Australia, this connotation, among younger generations of speakers had a non-sexual derisive meaning equivalent to rubbish or stupid (as in “That’s so gay.”) The Rainbow flag or Pride flag of the LGBT community (also known as the gay pride flag) is a symbol of LGBT pride and LGBT social movements in use since the 1970s. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in LGBT rights marches. It originated in the United States, but is now used worldwide. Designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, the design has undergone several revisions. As of 2008, the most common variant consists of six stripes, with the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The flag is commonly flown horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as the colors would appear in a natural rainbow. Portrait of the frist two Adams.
A little background on the inspiration for this. There is this religious group in america called the Westboro Baptist Church and they are insane. they have a website and its called godhatesfags.com they go around protesting at soldiers funerals saying that they died because america supports rights to gay people. Most recently they have pledged to protest at Heath Ledger’s funeral and at any memorial services for him simply because of his portrayal of a homosexual in Brokeback mountain.. there is a ton of info on this group, and you need not go any further than simply going to their website to understand the extent of their craziness, but be my guest and research further if you wish. anyway it all pissed me off to a point where I needed to vent it out in the most positive way that I could, so i did this design as my personal protest to their bull.
I will give a better description at another time. Basically it’s about homosexuality, it’s about society, love, hate, pulls and ties, and being blinded by the truth. The medium is charcoal and white chalk on toned paper. Original is available.
