“Homeward Bound” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © A cattle property at Marlborough, Queensland “Bind me not to the pasture, chain me not to the plow. / Set me free to find my calling and I’ll return to you somehow. / If you find it me you’re missing, if you’re hoping I’ll return. / To your thoughts I’ll soon be listening, and on the road I’ll stop and turn. / Then the wind will set me racing as my journey nears its end. / And the path I’ll be retracing when I’m homeward bound again.” / ~ Kaelyn Archer

Whilst competing in a Rogaine in SW Western Australia my mate and I stumbled upon a deserted farmhouse and out buildings. Because we were camping overnight in roughly the same area I managed to get back the next morning to get a few shots. I only hope I can find my way back there as there are lots of shots to be made.

Sepia Toned of a previous…Morning sun filters through the trees at John Olivers Cabin with a few dogwoods in the background…..The Oliver’s bought land in the Cove in 1826 and this cabin site remained in the family until the Park was established. The house is typical of many found on the eastern frontier in the mid-1850s, and reflects the skills and techniques brought into the mountains by descendants of British and European immigrants…..Split-rail fences require much more timber than other types of fences, and so are not common in areas where wood is scarce or expensive. However, they are very simple in their construction, and can be assembled with few tools even on hard or rocky ground. They also can be built without using any nails or other hardware; such hardware was often scarce in frontier locations. These fences are sometimes refered to as Worm Fence due to the back and forth placements…This cabin is located on the Cades Cove Loop Road, in the Great Smoky Mountain N.P.
The Farm is a scenic view of one of the many farms on the rural outskirts of Canberra. Behind the scenes / Often, images are born of hard work, careful planning and a lot of patience. Sometimes though, a wonderful scene will appear by chance. It was late in the day when a storm front came over forming some striking cloud formations over the pale brown landscape. The subdued light and limited colours made for a scene similar to a pastel painting. / Canon 1Ds mkIII | EF 100-400mm Artwork / The soft pastel tones and simple composition of this work make it a fantastic addition to your decor. This place…secluded…alone…in the desolate prairies of Wyoming. Somebody’s dream….their first home….raising kids and trying to make it off of the land. And now the dreams are faded…..people moved away. Too hard to make it out here….but still beautiful, even when abandoned. / *Orton effect by Don Miguel

Settling Along The Buffalo Abraham Villines, and his children were among the earliest pioneer families in the Buffalo River valley. Abraham’s grandson William built this log house in 1850 for his new bride, Rebecca. Four years later their son James was born here. James Villines (1854-1948) was known as ” Beaver Jim” for his trapping abilities. After his marriage in 1880, he moved from this home to his own farmstead across the Buffalo River. In the mid-twentieth century, Villines family descendants used this house as a barn..with the chimney still attached. Today the notched, and hand- hewn logs recall the pioneers that carved their homes out of the Buffalo River wilderness. Ponca Arkansas, USA

Moulton barn on Mormon Row was one of them. I stopped by the barn a couple of times, took some shots and my many visits finally paid off when I saw a buffalo herd grazing peacefully very close to the barn. I waited a little bit for them to come close enough so I could include one of them in this shot. / This beautiful, old homestead brings memories of the past but a wild buffalo roaming free makes it even more special. High Dramatic colors added in GIMP 2 to the already very dramatic autumn scene. / I wanted an image that would just jump right out of your screen, LOL! I think I accomplished that!! This old homestead is made from rough sawed oak slabs, and it is done in the board, and laith technique, and style. The rough sawed oak is put up green, and as it cures it woud shrink, and leave cracks. Once the shrinking had finished they would come along with a smaller strip to cover those cracks. You might be asking, why put it up green, then? Well, the answer is…..once the rough sawn oak seasons, it is almost impossible to drive a nail through it.

This was taken in Idaho just outside of Lava Hot Springs. October 2009 When we have driven up through this area before, I had always wondered about this little house and the people who had lived there. My husband saw this little road that looked like it went close so he turned on it and it led right up to the house. We were able to get a close up view of this place.
