The territory that now is Belgium has always been a group of semi-independent little fiefdoms that belonged to whoever conquered, bought or inherited them. As such they were constantly under thread from their neighbouring fiefdoms or from more powerfull countries. As a result the land was full of fortified noblemen’s homes, ranging from the simplest tower to gigantic palaces. Many of them are gone; destroyed in a war, a victim of changing fashions and replaced by a tasteless 19th century villa or having fallen apart as a result of Belgium’s lacklustre attitude to the care of historic monuments. Nevertheless, the country still boasts a wide range of castles, their architecture as diverse as the lands that now form Belgium. This calendar presents a brief overview of some of the nicest examples. As with the calendar of castles in the Netherlands, this calendar tries not to show just the most famous ones, but also the charm of the smaller noblemen’s homes in the country. If it seems a little odd to have a calendar filled with flowers that also boasts a TRAIN in the month of May … I put that in for my son, who LOVES trains, in honour of his birthday. If you look closely, there are flowers all around the train though ….

My home province, where I was born and raised. It’s beauty and it’s people are like no other. I’m proud to have a little prairie embedded deep inside of me. Anyone who knows the prairies, will appreciate these 12 months I have chosen. Take me home! This calendar is dedicated to my family. Saskatchewan contains two major natural regions: the Canadian Shield in the north and the Interior Plains in the south. Northern Saskatchewan is mostly covered by Boreal forest except for the Lake Athabasca Sand Dunes, the largest active sand dunes in the world north of 58°, adjacent to the southern shore of Lake Athabasca. Southern Saskatchewan contains another area with sand dunes known as the “Great Sand Hills” covering over 300 square kms. (120 sq mi). The Cypress Hills, located in the southwestern corner of Saskatchewan and Killdeer Badlands (Grasslands National Park) are areas of the province that remained unglaciated during the last glaciation period. The province’s highest point at 1,468 metres (4,816 ft) is located in the Cypress Hills and is the highest geographical point above sea-level between the Rocky Mountains and Quebec. The lowest point is the shore of Lake Athabasca, at 213 metres (700 ft). The province has fourteen major drainage basin made up of various rivers and watersheds draining into the Arctic Ocean, Hudson Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico.

I took these shots a few Sundays ago when I visited a local cemetery. (Thank you Gary and Denice for pointing me to something right under my nose.) I had planned to use them for reference for future drawings, but they looked as though they could use their own home in between.
