This image can be purchased HERE where it is titled “reflection” and proceeds go to the Phoenix-Appeal group. Loch of the Lowes lies in the beautiful scottish borders between Moffat and Selkirk. It flows into nearby St Mary’s loch (with its thriving sailing club) past old Tibbieshiels inn, hostelry and overnight stop for walkers on the southern upland way crossing Scotland. Overlooking the north end of the loch is a monument to James Hogg – the Scottish Poet known as the Ettrick Shepherd, friend and contemporary of Sir Walter Scott. Taken 4/3/08 (untouched) with a pocket fuji finepix A500 (there is a 2nd loch of the lowes further north in Perthshire, complete with osprey viewing centre – but you can see the wonderful fish eagle hunting here too if you are lucky!) Out for hours on a perfect day out with my new dslr it took ages to get far as I kept stopping to try things like this…. bliss! We often get asked how are the homepage images are chosen. Well as you know we avoid secrets at the Bubble. So here is how it is done. The foundation of the homepage is variety. With almost 5000 images added per day and only 16-24 being shown on the homepage in a day we try to showcase across the genres on RedBubble: photography, t-shirts, digital manipulations, traditional, design etc. Each page is built by hand and we like to give each image chosen a little bit of time on the page (normally 8-12 hours). Generally the page is put together by Martin, Jo or Hop (and they cannot be lobbied or bought). They each have different styles. But they like to discover new and emerging artists or images. Quality is a given but we make no claim that what makes it on the page is the “best”. Deciding this would be a job beyond human ability. Commonly images are chosen through searches on a theme (eg umbrellas, legs etc) so tagging well is a good idea. They may also be chosen from recent work added (we like to have currency in the page). Images are also often chosen from the winners of challenges (another benefit to entering challenges) or from the featured work in groups. We tend to avoid the “popular” ranking to select images as these images almost by definition have been well discovered. Edgy or artistically challenging images are often chosen but not images that are not safe for work. We also do not use the homepage to make political statements. And finally … the homepage is not set in stone. We are not wedded to the current design treatment. Small changes will be released shortly to highlight more of the activity on the site. I suspect we will also want to be testing whether the 8 images is too few, too many, too static. Martin (aka Pilgrim)
