It will be forty years in December since Harold Holt, then Prime Minister of Australia, disappeared while swimming. Only in the last few years did a proper inquiry conclude that he had drowned that day. The conspiracy theories were circulating long before that. / Conspiracy theories are great. The more unlikely and, well, ridiculous they seem to skeptics, the more passionately believers cling to them. And apparently there are still some among my countrymen who are convinced that Mr Holt was picked up by a Chinese submarine and carted off to Peking (as it was then). There are opposing schools on what happened subsequent to his arrival there. Some say he was interrogated for secrets shared with him by US President Johnson. Others insist he had been a Red agent for years, and lived out his final years in Oriental luxury. / The National Archives of Australia have made the Holt disappearance their Find of The Month. You can see a sample of the letters they recieved here / – click on the thumbnails for the full text. Funny, but nobody mentions aliens and anal probes… / ____

For some reason, I feel at home with my predominant peers south of the equator. I find it interesting that I joined Red Bubble particularly due to a search to find a better platform to express my own creative abilities with folks of the same aim. That I discovered that Red Bubble originated out of Australia, where I had the fortune of being hosted by this fabulous world called “Aussie Land” back in the early 70’s. I was stationed at the U. S. Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt from April 1972 – 1974. It is near the town of Exmouth, W.A. I had the wonderful opportunity to mix in with the local residents in the area. We all seemed to enjoy the unity at the Anglican Inland Mission Assembly every Sunday evening. From the beginning to the end of my tour of service, I found myself blessed in the opportunity of meeting many wonderful folk in that territory alone. If I have any misgivings of that experience it would be that I had not taken the opportunity to seee more of a beautiful with so fine a gentry. For the most part, our ancestry are of kindred kind….seeking a new world of opportunity that the ‘old world’ stifled them from having. They took their bets on thirteen colonies back in the 16th -19th centuries / and an isolated continent in the 18th through the 20th century. Even now as I share my ‘fruits of my creativity’, am gin great appreciation of the people of Austrailia. Thank You.
A legacy not forgotten.
Although ‘1897’ is emblazoned above the portals, as a record of major enhancements made, the Holte Hotel was in existence in the 1870’s and probably goes back even further. It was once a focal point for people who came to the former Aston Lower Grounds, with views the menagerie, the gardens, the duck pond and many other entertainment features – and once hosted the visit of Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Circus. As part of the assets of Aston Villa F.C. it was a popular pre & post match ‘boozer’ for Villa fans before it was closed and fell into disrepair. When American billionaire Randy Lerner bought Villa in September 2006 he immediately set about renovating the historic pub which is now once again quenching the thirsts of the Villa faithful.

An image from last weekend’s snow storm. This is the Mill Creek along Holt Road in Webster. The Willow Trees and grasses prevent you from looking at this scene in the summer time, so I forget it’s here even though I cross it at least twice a day. The snow was fresh last weekend, but it’s melting today, and if it rains like they predicted we may even be seeing grass in the yard for Christmas. So this will have to serve as our White Christmas memory. Merry Christmas everyone, I doubt I will have time to post a new image tomorrow, so this will have to suffice until after the Holiday. It sounds cliche, I know, but I do wish you and yours a happy and safe holiday. December, 2008 Canon EFS 18-55 1:3.5-5.6, 55mm, f5.7, 1/200, ISO 200, Canon XSi (450d)

Please View Large Wikipedia © Ten of the twenty locomotives were rebuilt from Atbara Class engines, the first (number 3405) being converted in September 1902 and the rest following in 1907–1909. The other ten were built new during 1903 at the GWR’s Swindon locomotive works. The whole class was gradually replaced and scrapped in the period 1927–1931. The most famous locomotive in the class, 3440 City of Truro (later renumbered 3717), is reputedly the first European steam locomotive to travel in excess of 100mph. It was the 2000th locomotive to be built at Swindon, leaving the works in April 1903. Because of its famed 1904 run, “City of Truro” is the only member of the class to survive in preservation. It is owned by the National Railway Museum, York. It was last restored to full working order in 2004 and is currently (2009) frequently loaned for operation on UK main lines and on preserved railways. Please View Large Wikipedia © The Great Eastern Railway (GER) Class Y14 is a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotive. The LNER classified them J15. / The Class Y14 was designed by T.W. Worsdell for both freight and passenger duties – a veritable ‘maid of all work’. Introduced in July 1883, they were so successful that all the succeeding chief superintendents continued to build new batches down to 1913 with little design change, the final total being 289. During World War I, 43 of the engines served in France and Belgium . On December 10th, 11th 1891, the Great Eastern Railway’s Stratford Works built one of these locomotives and had it in steam with a coat of grey primer in 9 hours 47 minutes; this remains a world record. The locomotive then went off to run 36,000 miles on Peterborough to London coal trains before coming back to the works for the final coat of paint. It lasted 40 years and ran a total of 1127,750 miles. / Because of their light weight the locomotives were given the Route Availability (RA) number 1, indicating that they could work over nearly all routes. As built all the locomotives had a stovepipe chimney; this was replaced in L.N.E.R days by a cast chimney with a small lip. The original Wordsell and early Holden series had three-ring boilers with the steam dome placed in the middle. Also the Wordsell boilers had a flat grate, however from 1890 Holden developed a boiler with a sloping grate and a two-ring telescopic barrel with the dome located well forward. The advantage of the dome position was a short 5½ inch steam pipe which limited pressure drop between the boiler and the cylinders. This boiler was adopted as standard and persisted on all Great Eastern Locomotives down to 1898; from then on it was perpetuated on the smaller locomotives as long as these remained essentially in their original configuration – which could be down to the 1960s. / As with all Great Eastern classes, the Y14 had a cab with a low wooden roof covered with canvas sealed by a coat of lead paint. This was replaced in L.N.E.R days by a higher arched sheet metal roof. Some engines had special side window cabs for service on the exposed Brightlingsea and Colne Valley branches. Number 65462 is preserved on the North Norfolk Railway and owned by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society. Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 Kupuna Sam Kaha‘i Ka‘ai / / Kupuna is an honoured elder who has practiced wisdom and acquired enough life experience to become a family and community leader. Sam Ka’ai is our dear friend. He is a master woodcarver, a visionary visual artist and a Hawaiian cultural practitioner. Sam Ka’ai was born in Hana in 1938. During the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s he played key roles, hand carving ki’i (spirit totems) for traditional Hawaiian sailing vessels such as the Hōkūle‘a and revitalizing the ancient art of Hawaiian woodworking by creating an exquisite collection of hand-wrought weaponry, fish hooks, and ceremonial wooden bowls. A beautiful collection of his lifework is on display in an exhibit at the MACC. He is a visionary master artist. Here Sam is opening a sacred ceremony in honour of Carl and Rae Lindquist / Carl and Rae had recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. They enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner at Hotel Hana surrounded by family and friends. The rains on the island were heavy on this evening and management at the hotel offered them a room so they would not need to drive, but they declined the offer and chose instead to drive to their home in Ulaino. Their mangled and battered vehicle was discovered upside in the Honomaele stream it is said about 100 yards from where the stream meets the ocean. It is believed Carl and Rae were swept out to the ocean in a flash flood. A three day land and search was unsuccessful. Our hearts go out to their family for this heartbreaking tragedy. Hawaiians call the seashell “Pu”. It is a ceremonial Triton shell horn which may be heard as far as two miles away. In ancient times and today, blowing the Pu announces the presence of Ali’i (Hawaiian royalty) or the start of Makahiki season. It is also used to accompany oral history chants known as na ‘oli, the presentation of the royal court at hula festivals and commencement of traditional ceremonies.
