I have been down in Devon for a couple of days, so hope to be able to put some nice images on here in the coming days. Looking at the activity list it looks like you have all been waiting for me to leave my PC, judging my the endless pages of new work for me to look at!! I will try and view all your work soon, but my apologies if I miss one or two in the process. I hope all had a great Valentines Day! Regards, Colin

I am happy to announce a new group on Redbubble. / Wessex is the ancient kingdom which roughly encompassed the present day counties of Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and parts of Gloucestershire, here in the south of England. Whether it be 12th century cathedrals, ancient stone circles like Stonehenge and Avebury, the Jurassic coastline or the modern world and its technology (Concorde built at Filton, Bristol, Sunseeker yachts at Poole and the Spinnaker tower in Portsmouth to name just a few), there is an enormous amount of material to be captured in photography and other visual arts. I hope to be able to welcome many new members. Please join if you have some work of the area and pass the word around to anyone you think may be interested. Best regards, / Colin

I have now reached 10000 views, so would like to say a big “Thank you” to all those people that have looked at my images since I joined RB in December. / Your support for my work is very much appreciated. / I now fully expect sales to come flooding in!!!! ;-) The Wessex UK group I started continues to grow steadily and already contains some marvellous images of the area- do have a look at the work there and of the members. Best wishes to all… Colin

Hi everyone / Firstly apologies to everyone for not commenting on your work recently – various commitments here have meant time on RB has been severely limited. I know I will never catch up on the backlog completely! There is a phenomenon I have discovered that if 12 months pass after a 49th birthday, then (apparently) one becomes 50 (and therefore qualify for the cardigan, slippers and pipe)!!!! / Despite all attempts to warp time, it seems I cannot prevent this happening next Friday (11th) and I will have been on this planet for half a century!!!!!!! Anyway, I am being taken off to the sun for a week, so at least I can spend the big day trying to rid the Canary Islands of cerveja and sangria! So, will catch up with you all next week sometime, armed with plenty of images to upload (though I cannot guarantee level horizons!) Keep up the good work in my absence!!! Col

I have been rushing about so much in the past couple of weeks that I have had little time to spend here at RB. / My apologies therefore to all my friends here that my commenting hasn’t been as plentiful as I would have wished. I didnt even realise that I have now passed 20,000 views, so thank you all for your support. :-) The coming weeks look rather busy too, but hope to sneak back here as often as I can! I might even get chance to upload some more images!! Best wishes to all. / Colin

After a bit of fiddling about, I now have my website more or less how I think I want it. / It will be great when RB enable us to change background colours etc, but for now I am pleased with what they have achieved. I especially like the zoom in feature on images selected as cards, prints etc. / At last our work can be seen without the “clutter” of our community i.e. comments etc, so our work can be shown off to potential buyers to best advantage. / Well done RB!! Here is the link .... (hope that works!) If anyone needs a bit of assistance setting theirs up, please BM me. Regards, Colin

I have just noticed that my image “Canary windmill” has been featured on the Red Bubble homepage! / Many thanks to RB for this honour!! / (I wondered why this image, which I posted several months ago, had attracted lots of comments and favouritings in the past 24 hours) – just goes to show that a home page feature is really worth having :-) / I am about to depart for a trip into Holland and eastern Europe, so hopefully I will get some images to post when I get back.

/ When I was eight years old (1988) I lived in Hollywood, Ca on a Movie Camp. That in itself is a LONG story but to put it simply, my father was producing a movie, an 80’s teenager in trouble sort of movie. I did actually meet a few actors, one that I still remember is Robin Lively, the red head from I believe the third Karate kid. She was really nice, so nice my little brother fell in love with her, at six, he was sure she would be his girlfriend. LOL / She was actually in the movie my father was working on, which never did end up getting produced. Too bad because I’m actually in it!!!! Haha…okay well maybe that is a good thing. Well during production my father also met one of the animators of a soon to be released Disney cartoon you just may have heard of called The Little Mermaid, Glen Keane. I was an aspiring artist at the time and drawing relentlessly. I even carried around my little box of colored pencils and pens with me everywhere drawing pictures and portraits for people on the spot. It was my way of sharing something with people. Well my father told Glen about me, to this day I’m not sure what he said, except that I loved drawing and mermaids. Both very true facts. Perhaps my Dad showed him a few of my drawings, which I’m sure would have warranted a few chuckles, I liked to exaggerate in my creations. if I perceived someone as fast, they might have three to four legs, and I loved to create made up animals. My favorite was an ostrich-lama, which I drew all the time in hopes that I could cause suspect about their existence. Well Glen, was touched for some reason and quickly sketched the above drawing of the character “Ariel” The Little Mermaid, and dedicated it to me, with a verse from the Bible. I remember when my father brought it home for me that night and I saw it for the first time. First of all I was stunned with the fact I was actually getting a present but also I thought it was the most beautiful drawing I had seen…and the fact that it had MY NAME written on it made it the most valuable treasure I owned. I quickly procured the help of my Mother in putting it in a frame. The best frame in the house. I hung it high on my bedroom wall and would just stare in awe at the special drawing that was created just for me. I studied every detail of it. / I remember thinking, Glen gave me that verse…it’s for me. I then immediately rushed to go look it up in a Bible….I was so excited to see what special secret message it said for me… James 1:17….”Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” Ooooh and that was for me. This “Gift” was for me and I really wanted my art to be my gift as well. That drawing as simple as it was, to me was from the biggest celebrity there could be, a REAL artist working for Disney! / It still hangs on my wall in the original frame snagged from my childhood home. It has been sitting above my drafting table looking over me through every portrait and drawing I have created. The gift, the drawing, and the message it holds, influence me to this day. I believe simple words of encouragement at key times in our lives have the biggest impact. There is a lot of power in a kind word or a simple gift even. Especially a gift that can leave a fingerprint on a spirit. It left a finger print on mine. So “Thank You” Glen Keane. ...and to any aspiring artists just remember the same words from James 1:17 and may they bring you encouragement and happiness too. Keep sharing your gift you just never know who it will encourage! - Carrie Glenn

The title probably makes this tutorial sound a little more glamorous than it actually is :) It’s extremely simple to achieve, but can have quite a visual impact and it gives you another trick to have up your sleeve when doing portraits. The image is brought to us by hamletnc over at Stock / Xchange and if you’ve taken a look at the other couple of portrait tutorials I’ve done, you will recognise it. So lets get going – With the image open, go grab the rectangular marquee tool and referencing my image below, make a selection about the same size. Once you’ve done that, press Ctrl + J on the keyboard to put the selection on it’s own layer. Once you have the eyes on their own layers press Ctrl + T to bring up the Transform Tool. In the top toolbar, click on the little link icon (see image below) to lock the width and height, then change the amount to 106%. And you should end up with this mess. Add a mask to this layer, grab a soft edged brush, and making sure that your foreground colour is set to black – take away the bits of the enlargement that aren’t needed. See the mask below. It isn’t really advisable to take the percentage to more than 6% (106 in total), but you can try it higher if you want. A simple technique to draw attention to the eye area of an image. Have fun!

After a couple of days away from RB, I was about to write a journal to say a big thank you to the unknown person who bought a medium framed print of / Steam Up / when I also noticed that overnight someone has bought a laminated print of / Home, sweet home / too! / I am so pleased these images have stood out enough among the thousands on RB for buyers to choose them. It really proves that RB works! (even though I sometimes get the feeling that it is now more of a photo community and less a selling tool). ...perhaps it is all down to our British “mini heatwave”!!
