“Hollyhocks” is the final piece in my small series of paintings inspired by the San Felipe de Neri church. Hollyhocks thrive here in the New Mexico sunshine. I love the bright and varied colors against the earth tones of adobe walls. All proceeds from this work are to be donated to the Philadelphia Mission to feed, clothe, and provide medicine and education to the starving children in Africa. Western Washington near Puget Sound Picket Fences and Garden Gates are so magical to me. My first memory of them are when I was very young and my grandmother had her little garden surrounded with this pristine white picket fence. As I walked through the gate, I was greeted with the heavenly fragrance of roses and there stood these most amazing tall flowers called Hollyhocks. They were taller than I was with these individual flowers that traveled around the sturdy upright stalk. But I think the name alone was magic to me. Hollyhocks! HOLLYHOCKS! Isn’t that just music to your ears? Grandmother showed me the little seed packet that had held these tiny orbs that grew into these amazing flowers. She explained to me how the sun and the rain nourished the seeds until they popped out of their shell and began their journey to become one of the most amazing flowers I have ever seen in my life. Now, whenever I see a white pickets and rose bushes, I think of my Grandmother, but also I know that some of the most beautiful treasures grow inside of that protective… and visually poetic… picket fence. / All the images and text contained herein may not be reproduced, copied, edited, published, transmitted or uploaded in any way without my express written permission. In my absence this last week from RB and my home…I came home to a wonderful surprise of my Hollyhocks blooming in all their glory!! / Hollyhocks bloom here in the desert mid-May and will continue blooming through the Summer, you can cut back between blooming cycles and they will bloom again… /

Plum (perfect) being the colour and the flower- these are so tall and colourful in the herbaceous border- well actually mine are in pots as I am growing unusal colours for photography as well as to look at! Hope you like. Taken with a Fuji A600 Finepix digital camera -cropped and sharpened in Picasa 3 free download.

Watercolour (Winsor and Newton) on 140 lb. Arches cold press paper. This was bases on a series of photos I took during one of our bike rides along the trail in Thornbury, Ontario. My husband’s bicycle tire exploded, thereby ending our ride, so I took photos while he searched for a place to get it fixed. I was lucky to find some gorgeous hollyhocks in a garden that backed onto the bike trail, and now have some wonderful references for even more paintings.
