Controversial home page and no more holidays for Peter

Hello all, Well it seems that I shouldn’t be allowed to go on holidays! For the last two weeks I’ve been hanging out on a beach in Far North Queensland – boring my daughter with early morning photo sessions: And over these two weeks a couple controversies of have popped up on RedBubble that I feel need to be addressed. Principally, there was the homepage from yesterday: This homepage has been interpreted as anti Iraq war, anti American and anti US soldiers fighting the Iraq war. This was not the intention of the home page. The staff of RB take it in turns to select the home page and the creator of this particular home page wrote to me: My sole intention was to display a selection of silhouette / stencil t-shirt designs that were a credit to their creators. I apologize unreservedly to anyone who has been offended by this home page. Philosophically, we view RedBubble as a platform. It’s a platform for people to share their ‘creative genius’ (art / design / et cetera) – to enjoy the work of others – to exchange ideas – to be encouraged and inspired – to learn and grow. Our role is to provide and monitor this platform – it’s not our role to take sides. We strive to be impartial and independent. There are ground rules for RedBubble – and they exist to help us to cultivate an open and supportive environment. But when it comes to individual topics we want to ‘stay out of it’ except where things start to go outside of the guidelines. The home page was a mistake as it could be interpreted as an editorial endorsement of a particular view on the Iraq war. We make no editorial comment on the Iraq war – and we will be more careful to stay impartial with future home pages (and other places in the site that can be viewed as editorial). Again I apologize unreservedly for any distress we have caused with this homepage. The home page controversy also leads me to the broader issue of dealing with ‘hot’ topics on RedBubble. Some have suggested that we should ban any material that touches on politics or religion (hot topics). I don’t think this would be good for RedBubble – in fact I think it would diminish the site. Art can help us ‘see’ the world – it can help us to better understand the experience that is life. And politics, religion and other such ‘hot’ topics are often very important components of our world and our lives. As such I think they deserve to be the subject of artistic reflection – and subject to debate and discussion. To leave them off the site would be to create a conspicuous emptiness – and would limit the journey we might each be able to make with RB. However, I do acknowledge the importance of ensuring that ‘hot’ topics are handled and debated appropriately – and that we don’t have all the infrastructure for this at the moment. For example, there was a recent forum thread on homosexuality and the church – and this thread was unfortunately de-railed by constant, and in some instances highly offensive, generic attacks against Christians. Notwithstanding this setback, we are committed to the creation of the features, processes and culture that allow a controversial debate to be conducted on RedBubble – without the eruption of world war three. This is really hard to do on the Internet – because without verbal and non-verbal cues written words are easily misinterpreted. But we think it’s important. Please bear with us (and help us) as we work towards a better way of handling ‘hot’ topics. I think the next thing we’ll build is ‘moderated’ forum functionality – where selected ‘hot’ topics have every entry vetted before publication. But perhaps the most important thing we can all build is a culture that’s accepting of ‘hot’ topics. A culture where things can be debated and discussed without it becoming personal. A culture where openness is encouraged and patience is shown. A culture where we strive to respect different perspectives. Anyway – it’s midnight on my last day of ‘holidays’ and I’ve got to pack. The principal purpose of this journal entry was again to apologize for any offense caused by yesterday’s home page. As always your comments and reflections are welcome. -Peter

Arrggghhh….I’m going to miss you all so much! Leaving tomorrow for a second honeymoon in NZ….not going to be much time for the bub, so I’ll just have to say hooroo and will catch up with you all when I return. Gotta go pack – cameras, lenses, tripod, cable release, lee filters, batteries, battery chargers, power leads, extension cord, powerboard….these are all essential, of course. Clothing and toiletries are optional extras… Take care all you lovely people, I’ll log in if I can, but it’s not going to happen often, I suspect.

Tasmanian Photo Journal (lots of photos!)

As you might remember, for my birthday James gave me a trip to Tasmania, which makes me totally and utterly spoiled rotten. (and very happy, tee hee) So how does one have a Tasmanian Holiday? / Start by getting on the Spirit Of Tasmania. There was this crazy guy doing all the announcements and he kept giggling and then trailing off at the end of each one…. strange. / Have a “Final Destination Moment” on the way from the ship. If you don’t get that, you’re not cool enough. / Prepare for self portraits by testing all the furniture for it’s climbability… result? Low climbability options, proceed with care and a cup of tea. / Visit some cows, lots of cows. Black cows, spotty cows, even cows with flies on their ears. / Learn how to do landscape photography without even looking at what you are doing. James calls this “Landscape photography 101.” I call it silly. / Take embarrassing tourist photos of unwashed hair in front of a vaguely attractive looking landscape from a lookout that takes ages to get to and isn’t worth the effort. / Visit sheep… / Many sheep… It’s at about this point that I should confess that the highlight of my trip to Tasmania was sheep. I love sheep, and wool, and it was so sheepy and so woolly. ah, love the sheep…. baaaaaaa! / Stay in dodgy accommodation (not that it matters, we were sleepy by this point) / Have many many toilet stops. So James can take many embarrassing photos of said stops. / Eat awesome food and take Hien-style photos of the food while telling James he has to wait until I get a good shot. He was hungry. Sorry hon. / Take photos under fences of grass and pretty trees and stuff that I never take photos of. / Drive up and down nine mile beach until Jo chucks a tantrum and makes James go back to the first look out we saw and then insist it was another one and then realise she is wrong and chucks another tantrum. / Have RedBubble meet ups with the Tasmanian Locals. Of course in Tasmania, five minutes down the road is a ‘long distance’ so they might not consider themselves as local as we did. “Are you local?” (If you get that joke, I love you and you are a huge geek) / Stop several times and stay on the alert for “the tree” for many hours before James can swerve off the road to take a photo with power lines in it. / Find crazy camping grounds where they are obviously killing all their naughty visitors and warning off other naughty people by hanging their victims’ shoes out the front. / Be majorly big tourists and carry heavy cameras around busy markets and buy nice photography books which have nothing to do with Tasmania as souvenirs / What was that? Jo is into sheep and wool? Yes I actually dragged him into the wool centre so that I could touch and feel all the different types of wool and re-educate myself on the production process from sheep to suit. Um…. / Say hi to Rambo / James says that this was his ‘careful planning of schedules.’ I say it is technology dependency. / Have an unplanned and surprisingly good last stop to kill time before getting back on the ship. The guy who owned the place was going around offering to take people’s photos which we saw right through- he just wanted to play with people’s cameras. / This has nothing to do with Tasmania… James made me add it

Tasmania Here I Come
by Jo O'Brien...
/ Cruising by Mark Higgins Possibly the most awesome early birthday present ever – a long weekend in Tasmania I think it’s supposed to be a mushy couple thing, but I insisted on at least one afternoon of bubbler fun. The boat lands early on April 24th and we’re driving around for a few days doing the tourist thing and drinking coffee at every cafe on the way. Ideas? Places to visit? People to see? Things to do? What & Who to photograph? Where to stay? So excited.

.......For about 10 days…...just following Stuart Chapmans lead with the STUpidity. I am off to Brittany pour mon vaccances. Je catchez le ferry avec ma famille aujourdui from Portsmouth. We are going to Brittany for some sea, sand and long crusty sandwiches washed down with lashings of red wine….and thats just the kids! On my return I promise to break the monotony of plying you with badly photographed and processed images of leicestershire by plying you with badly photographed and processed images of France. Just wanted to say that its almost a year since I joined RB…..during that time I have sold enough stuff to take my wife and kids to Burger King for a right royal nosh up! Hurrah! Next year we are planning to go to Pizza Hut so start buying folks! In all seriousness…this last year has been a real pleasure for me. I have encountered a huge number of extremely nice, helpful and incredibly talented people!......And Stuart Chapman…..(just kidding…he’s a top bloke and his work is fab)! I have made a truly good friend in Mr Graeme Pettit…..the only other person I know…apart from me…who is taller when lying down…..My photography has gone from shit to mediocre and that can only be a good thing! I enjoyed the RB meet tremendously…..however tired I felt LOL! A huge cyber hug to you all! Thanks for a fab year…see you when I get home! Simon

Hi To All My Friends in RedBubble Land!!! Thought I’d let you all know that I’m sorry, but I won’t be able to “Reply to any Comments” on my work, or Comment on anyone else’s work, as I am taking a 2 months Caravan Holiday up to Cape York, North Queensland. Cape York is the most northern point of Australia. I will certainly miss the contact with the many lovely people that I have come to know on RB!!! I so appreciate the many wonderful and encouraging comments on my work and the overwhelming support from you all!! Thank You All So Very Much!! I will be busy preparing for our trip over the next few days or more, as I intend to leave by the end of the week, so I thought I would send this out sooner rather than later! Hope to return home around mid June with many holiday pics to upload onto RB for you all to see!!! Until Then….. Take care!! Regards / Blossom (Marilyn)

Melbourne is Freezing

So I’m back from my brief holiday to Uluru, Alice Springs and Kings Canyon. 2000+ photos later and I never want to look at a big red rock ever again! But seriously, I had a great time. I embraced the nothingness of being in the middle of nowhere and made heaps of friends around campfires and on tour buses. I’ve come back with bunches of email addresses and the business cards of some great artists and other friendly folk. I thought being away would allow me to comtemplate life, the universe and everything, but found that instead it allowed me to swtich off for a while and not think about anything too hard. It was fantastic. When’s my next holiday? / Me riding a camel with my friend Christine. My mother and sister are on the one behind us / Just a bit of prettiness from the base of Uluru / Me being a tourist in Alice Springs at the Sunday Market Of course now I’m back in Melbourne where it is colder and I have to pick up where I left off. Thankful that I still have some annual leave up my sleeve, I’ve got some time to pursue other interests and ventures… and catch up with all you wonderful people on the bubble. So, what’s being going on while I was away?

Hey one and all, hope this finds you all fighting fit and happy !! Have just returned from my quick 3 week trip to the US. Was my 23rd trip to the States so I have seen quite a bit previously. Visited / San Francisco / Yosemite – loved it !! / Las Vegas - umm, well, next …..good place to see Red Rock Canyon and then escape :) / Most fav places apart from Yosemite : / Bryce & Zion National Parks (especially hiking in Bryce) / Arches & Monument Valley / Glen Canyon / Antelope Canyon – amazing colours / Sedona, pretty place / Waking up with a view over the Grand Canyon, sunrise in bed :)) / Death Valley – loved it Experienced amazing temperature changes from -5 C to 45 C. The drive from Escalante to Torrey in Utah was so beautiful through birch forests with filtered light and snow. Tried to shoot with totally numb fingers…....not good LOL Decided that I’m a summer person for sure :) / / Picked up a SUV in Vegas and drove 2350 miles in 10 days…....and saw some amazing national parks and some really gorgeous wildlife. / Would have to say that my fav places would have to be Bryce Canyon and Yosemite, though Death Valley had some of the most amazing rock formations and colours I have seen. Death Valley was wonderful although when I was there, we had blackouts at the Furness Creek Resort, no electricity for 14 hours, sand storms and powerful winds making shooting a challenge, not to mention hiking, but I did it :)) Overall had a great adventure, feeling rested, slightly jet lagged and planning my next trip :)) Hope to catch up with your work, if you think I’ve missed one of your best shots/art work when I was absent pls BM the link :)) Talk soon. / Thanks to those that sent me messages when I was away I truly appreciate it !! Hugsss xx / V

Just wanted to let you know that I will be away for the next week and won’t be able to access RB as much as I would like….(I’m suffering withdrawals already..). My son has won tickets to see Bob The Builder so we are off to Sydney to stay with my parents…just in time for the APEC Conference. (Yay) / They live relatively near the beach, so because they can look after the boys, I think I’ll get a chance to get some stupid o’clock shots in. Hope you check out the last few images I uploaded and I’ll be sure to catch up with everyones latest uploads when I return. See ya / Naomi.

Hi One and All Am off on the 14th April back to the USA for my 23rd trip, so much to see and so little time and all that !!! Am off to San Francisco, then Yosemite. Flying to Las Vegas staying at the Paris Hotel for a while before picking up my Chev Trailblazer and heading off. My plans are up in the air from there, this is basically where I want to go, - Zion/Bryce Canyon / - Arches National Park / Monument Valley / Lake Powell / - Antelope Canyon out of Paige / - Grand Canyon Yes, there is a lot on this list and I can’t possibly see it all but I live so far away am going to see as much as I can / Hopefully having time to visit Death Valley and Red Rock Canyon nearer to Vegas before returning the car and flying to San Francisco. Being an Aussie I am used to driving long distances in areas where there isn’t much in between so it doesn’t worry me. I have GPS… yay !! / I have ten full days for this part ….which I know is not a huge amount of time but as mentioned am willing to drive anywhere and any distance to see these areas. Would really appreciate it if you could offer me any advice on what to see, where to go any routes which are best and what weather conditions I may encounter…....so I don’t need 5 suitcases LOL. Or things to avoid :) Thank you so much, am excited !! / Hugss Varinia
