/ Cruising by Mark Higgins Possibly the most awesome early birthday present ever – a long weekend in Tasmania I think it’s supposed to be a mushy couple thing, but I insisted on at least one afternoon of bubbler fun. The boat lands early on April 24th and we’re driving around for a few days doing the tourist thing and drinking coffee at every cafe on the way. Ideas? Places to visit? People to see? Things to do? What & Who to photograph? Where to stay? So excited.

I sat in many cafe’s / Discovered an old photo location had burned down (except for the chimney) / Went on a ferry and got a bit sick / Went to Church / Checked out display homes / Visited a car show / Had lunch at mum’s place / ...where she asked my aunty (a nurse) to take the stitches out of the cat who had recently been desexed / / (thankfully she said no)

As you might remember, for my birthday James gave me a trip to Tasmania, which makes me totally and utterly spoiled rotten. (and very happy, tee hee) So how does one have a Tasmanian Holiday? / Start by getting on the Spirit Of Tasmania. There was this crazy guy doing all the announcements and he kept giggling and then trailing off at the end of each one…. strange. / Have a “Final Destination Moment” on the way from the ship. If you don’t get that, you’re not cool enough. / Prepare for self portraits by testing all the furniture for it’s climbability… result? Low climbability options, proceed with care and a cup of tea. / Visit some cows, lots of cows. Black cows, spotty cows, even cows with flies on their ears. / Learn how to do landscape photography without even looking at what you are doing. James calls this “Landscape photography 101.” I call it silly. / Take embarrassing tourist photos of unwashed hair in front of a vaguely attractive looking landscape from a lookout that takes ages to get to and isn’t worth the effort. / Visit sheep… / Many sheep… It’s at about this point that I should confess that the highlight of my trip to Tasmania was sheep. I love sheep, and wool, and it was so sheepy and so woolly. ah, love the sheep…. baaaaaaa! / Stay in dodgy accommodation (not that it matters, we were sleepy by this point) / Have many many toilet stops. So James can take many embarrassing photos of said stops. / Eat awesome food and take Hien-style photos of the food while telling James he has to wait until I get a good shot. He was hungry. Sorry hon. / Take photos under fences of grass and pretty trees and stuff that I never take photos of. / Drive up and down nine mile beach until Jo chucks a tantrum and makes James go back to the first look out we saw and then insist it was another one and then realise she is wrong and chucks another tantrum. / Have RedBubble meet ups with the Tasmanian Locals. Of course in Tasmania, five minutes down the road is a ‘long distance’ so they might not consider themselves as local as we did. “Are you local?” (If you get that joke, I love you and you are a huge geek) / Stop several times and stay on the alert for “the tree” for many hours before James can swerve off the road to take a photo with power lines in it. / Find crazy camping grounds where they are obviously killing all their naughty visitors and warning off other naughty people by hanging their victims’ shoes out the front. / Be majorly big tourists and carry heavy cameras around busy markets and buy nice photography books which have nothing to do with Tasmania as souvenirs / What was that? Jo is into sheep and wool? Yes I actually dragged him into the wool centre so that I could touch and feel all the different types of wool and re-educate myself on the production process from sheep to suit. Um…. / Say hi to Rambo / James says that this was his ‘careful planning of schedules.’ I say it is technology dependency. / Have an unplanned and surprisingly good last stop to kill time before getting back on the ship. The guy who owned the place was going around offering to take people’s photos which we saw right through- he just wanted to play with people’s cameras. / This has nothing to do with Tasmania… James made me add it

Hello all, Well it seems that I shouldn’t be allowed to go on holidays! For the last two weeks I’ve been hanging out on a beach in Far North Queensland – boring my daughter with early morning photo sessions: And over these two weeks a couple controversies of have popped up on RedBubble that I feel need to be addressed. Principally, there was the homepage from yesterday: This homepage has been interpreted as anti Iraq war, anti American and anti US soldiers fighting the Iraq war. This was not the intention of the home page. The staff of RB take it in turns to select the home page and the creator of this particular home page wrote to me: My sole intention was to display a selection of silhouette / stencil t-shirt designs that were a credit to their creators. I apologize unreservedly to anyone who has been offended by this home page. Philosophically, we view RedBubble as a platform. It’s a platform for people to share their ‘creative genius’ (art / design / et cetera) – to enjoy the work of others – to exchange ideas – to be encouraged and inspired – to learn and grow. Our role is to provide and monitor this platform – it’s not our role to take sides. We strive to be impartial and independent. There are ground rules for RedBubble – and they exist to help us to cultivate an open and supportive environment. But when it comes to individual topics we want to ‘stay out of it’ except where things start to go outside of the guidelines. The home page was a mistake as it could be interpreted as an editorial endorsement of a particular view on the Iraq war. We make no editorial comment on the Iraq war – and we will be more careful to stay impartial with future home pages (and other places in the site that can be viewed as editorial). Again I apologize unreservedly for any distress we have caused with this homepage. The home page controversy also leads me to the broader issue of dealing with ‘hot’ topics on RedBubble. Some have suggested that we should ban any material that touches on politics or religion (hot topics). I don’t think this would be good for RedBubble – in fact I think it would diminish the site. Art can help us ‘see’ the world – it can help us to better understand the experience that is life. And politics, religion and other such ‘hot’ topics are often very important components of our world and our lives. As such I think they deserve to be the subject of artistic reflection – and subject to debate and discussion. To leave them off the site would be to create a conspicuous emptiness – and would limit the journey we might each be able to make with RB. However, I do acknowledge the importance of ensuring that ‘hot’ topics are handled and debated appropriately – and that we don’t have all the infrastructure for this at the moment. For example, there was a recent forum thread on homosexuality and the church – and this thread was unfortunately de-railed by constant, and in some instances highly offensive, generic attacks against Christians. Notwithstanding this setback, we are committed to the creation of the features, processes and culture that allow a controversial debate to be conducted on RedBubble – without the eruption of world war three. This is really hard to do on the Internet – because without verbal and non-verbal cues written words are easily misinterpreted. But we think it’s important. Please bear with us (and help us) as we work towards a better way of handling ‘hot’ topics. I think the next thing we’ll build is ‘moderated’ forum functionality – where selected ‘hot’ topics have every entry vetted before publication. But perhaps the most important thing we can all build is a culture that’s accepting of ‘hot’ topics. A culture where things can be debated and discussed without it becoming personal. A culture where openness is encouraged and patience is shown. A culture where we strive to respect different perspectives. Anyway – it’s midnight on my last day of ‘holidays’ and I’ve got to pack. The principal purpose of this journal entry was again to apologize for any offense caused by yesterday’s home page. As always your comments and reflections are welcome. -Peter

Hello! The elves at RedBubble can no longer guarantee they can get your stuff on (and then off) Santa’s sleigh before Christmas. But don’t despair. A RedBubble gift certificate can still make its way there (at 186,000 miles per second). - Peter PS – Here’s some creative genius from Ed and Nat which you can use to let someone know there’s a gift on the way. Halls Gap is a small town located in the Grampians National Park. Besides being stunning to look at, you have wineries, bushwalking, relaxing with a good book, adventure sports and more right at your finger tips. Being a small town, all the various accommodation is quite close so it doesn’t matter where you choose to stay. Plus there is a great lolly shop there. For those who laugh at the thought of relaxing, a weekend away with other creative people could bring endless opportunities to create, collaborate and be inspired by the amazing scenery. Photographer, painters, models, illustrators, writers… There is something to inspire every creative soul. So, enough of my sales pitch… How about we all go to Halls Gap March 6th – 9th? March is far enough away that you can’t possibly have plans yet, the weather will still be nice and It’s probably someone’s birthday so we can eat cake. In terms of organising it. Probably best we keep it all in one spot Images in this post are used courtesy of lightsmith

As is customary for this time of year, I’m taking a little break to lie on a beach and forget what my computer looks like. I’ll be back early January with a suntan, ‘enough sleep’ and three extra kilos. Just a quick note to let anyone who’s interested know that I’ll soon be leaving to go bush for a few days! There’s this cosey little cabin we sometimes go to about three hours out of Auckland, it’s right next to the beach and very quiet and secluded. Just popping in to mention it because it might mean I have limited or no internet access, so I may not be able to comment or keep up to date with all of your fantastic work for a few days… If I do manage to get some online time I’ll probably only have time to Fav stuff. Take care and be good while I’m away, (especially YOU Steve!!! hahaha), and I’ll catch up with you all again as soon as I can! / Ciao 4 Now / Jennifer B / xox

Hi everyone, Now that spring has finally sprung down here on the little island, I am thinking of putting together an outing to the Tarkine Rainforest up near Meunna way. Normally a guided two and a half hour walk through the gorgeous rainforest surrounding the Tarkine Wilderness Lodge plus a delicious barbecue (or home cooked meal if the weather isn’t perfect) costs $55 per person. However our gracious host, Maree Jenkins, who has taken yours truly on the same walk many times with my camera understands that time works differently for us photographers. So she has kindly agreed to extend this to a half day walk at no extra cost. The walk is suitable for all levels of fitness, although there are some uppy/downy bits :) I’m thinking we should organise this for some time in the next 4 to 6 weeks on either a Saturday or Sunday. For those that may want to stay the night, accomodation will be available at The Lodge, or alternatively Meunna is halfway between Burnie and Stanley for alternative accommodation. Edit: I forgot to mention that there is plenty of holiday accommodation in the most gorgeous place on the planet too. That would be my little coastal village of Sisters Beach ;) If you think this sounds like something you might be interested in, either register your interest here, or send me a bubblemail. We would need at least five to ten people before we start looking at making any concrete plans. Just to get your shutter finger excited, below are some images I have taken over several walks through this area ;) And just for giggles… if you are very lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the extremely rare and elusive Canon Wombat with her baby on her back. Apparently she is a one of a kind ;)

I used to wish for a lot of things…especially when the new year arrived. I set goals, made plans, wished…but never really accomplished much of it. I guess you could say…although those dreams were implanted in my heart…and I had full intensions of succeeding…life just sorta got in the way and my wants slowly diminished. I was blind. I have come to realization…that we need to be thankful for what we have…not what we want. 2009 has been a very hard year fighting cancer…and as unusual as it sounds…I am so thankful for it, as it reminds me how precious our lives really are. Our greatest gifts…are the day that we are born. That first breath of air, our first loving hug, and that first moment we open our eyes to the world. We are given paths from those first baby steps we take…and into adulthood, those paths remain in front of us. I know sometimes we can take that wrong path…but it’s ok. We have to get off course from time to time to remind us to open our hearts just a little bit wider…and the more you open your heart…the more the truth will be revealed. There is no greater gift than that! Everyone dreams…and everyone wishes…especially at the beginning of a brand new year. This year my wish is for everyone to take a single moment out of each day…and remind yourselves of the gift God has given you…and in return, help someone who is less fortunate than yourself. Because if everyone were to help at least one person in their lifetime…than we would have a world of no sorrow. Happy Holidays to you and yours…and here is to a New Year of unconditional love!! Love always, / Kellie Imagine
