  • Taken at the Bar U Ranch near Longview, Alberta. July 1/09. / This ranch is famous for producing quality Percheron draught horses and maintaining the breed’s purity. / This is a small team being used to haul wagons to ferry passengers/tourists around the ranch during the canada day celebrations. / These amazing horses are bred for pulling heavy loads and have huge feet with hairy fetlocks, strong necks and shoulders and incredibly strong haunches. http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/art/border:blackwithdetail/product:laminated-print/size:medium/view:preview/3381290-2-small-team.jpg!:http://www.redbubble.com/people/alabca/art/3381290-2-small-team

  • A very impressive, all black Percheron eight horse hitch, done four-abreast, completing an initial turn pulling a large wagon on runners. One of the interesting highlights was that these eight comprise of mixed teams of four from two different owners and yet their footwork is almost in unison!! Taken Canada Day July 1/09 at the Bar U Ranch near Longview, Alberta. / The Bar U has a long history of raising purebred Percherons. / These amazing horses are bred for pulling heavy loads and have huge feet with hairy fetlocks, strong necks and shoulders and incredibly strong haunches. /

  • Look at that synchronized footwork!!!! / These wonderful black beauties performed turns and pulled the wagon on runners with ease. I had never seen an 8-horse hitch done in 2 sets of 4 abreast before! / These are two different teams with different owners intermingled for this demonstration and yet look how well the legs are synchronized…. Amazing! / Taken Canada Day July 1/09 at the Bar U Ranch near Longview, Alberta. The Bar U has a long history of raising purebred Percherons. / These amazing horses are bred for pulling heavy loads and have huge feet the size of dinner plates, strong necks and shoulders and incredibly powerful haunches.

  • I couldn’t believe the amazing rust that had formed on this chain after sitting for nearly 20 years behind our shop. I love the contrast between the lock and the chain. It was painted using Rublev 18th century reproduction watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. The interaction of the course grained paper and paint create interesting textures that really accentuate the rust in this piece. The original is 7”x5” in size. Featured in Just Watercolors group in August 2009. /

  • Featured in “Americas ~ Rural, Urban, Wild, Free” October 2009 A mother Common Merganser with two of her ducklings on her back getting a free ride and eleven more following behind – and, believe it not, there is a fourteenth following just out of picture! / Common Mergansers are fish-eaters and have serrated edges to their bills to assist in gripping their prey. Along with other species of Mergansers, they are often called “sawbills” . They also eat mussels and shrimps; and the young birds mainly eat aquatic insects. / I photographed this family for a couple of hours at French Creek, Vancouver Island BC and it was amusing to watch the antics of the duckings who made frequent attempts to climb on to their mother’s back, whilst on the ocean and also when they were resting on the seashore. Several times whilst on the ocean mother would dive under to get them off her back only to find that as soon as she resurfaced they would attempt to climb back on again! / The ducklings would also swim around on their own for food but never too far away from mum to whom they would swiftly return if there was any threat of danger – such as a Bald Eagle that was flying past looking for an easy lunch! Canon 20D / 1/1000sec f8 ISO 200

  • Watercolour I painted this about 20 years ago from a photo that my brother Guy took when he was out commercial fishing off the west coast of British Columbia.
