A lot of my work has been sold across Victoria in various craft markets and galleries. It all began at the Queen Victoria Market around 1999. I personally crafted the picture frames, and purchased materials made locally, or supported local business. I moved on to better quality frames, moisture free backings, and longevity printing (over 100 years lifespan in non-direct sunlight). I have been in a Southbank gallery, and often in bourke street Melbourne (Amazing Galleries franchise). I was a regular at various craft markets in the recent years, including the famous Williamstown Craft Market, Craft Markets Victoria, and Southbank market. My Graphic Design work paid for my photography and printing, and all my equipment! Being a freelance artist, I have the most freedom, and I set my own goals and targets. I love nature work, and it’s application in abstract art. I once thought that it would be great to have a little reminder in every home, of the beauty and infiniteness of the natural elements. / My camera is the eye, my computer the tool, and my imagination the spirit of my creations. All of my work is “LIVING ART”, and the energy contained within each piece is uplifting to the spirit, healing, balancing, and inspiring.

Well, one of you might be an old blog reader. Aladyx is a friend of mine from DeviantART.com who told me about RedBubble and gave me the link with a link to one of her watercolor pieces. I like this community. I love the way the front page shows artworks, lots of art jumping right out at me. I’ve been active and busy lately. Being a fantasy writer, I never miss “http://www.nanowrimo.org” and the only year I didn’t win it was 2002, when I was too sick and didn’t get started till the 25th. This year I’m about halfway done with my newest novel, Snowflake Obsidian, a fantasy with an equine hero based on a Lipizzan stallion but enchanted, he’s actually become a wizard now and I can’t wait to see how his quest comes out. A month ago, in October, on “http://robertsloan2.livejournal.com” where I usually blog, I started doing a drawing a day for a group called ArtSoMoFo. This led to so many interesting experiments and new directions that I kept it up right into November. I started experimenting with ACEOs around that time or a little earlier, doing colored pencil realism in a size category where I could finish it in a day or so instead of hanging onto it for weeks and years puttering and burnishing and finishing it with the same level of detail on a large piece. I’ve been having fun with it. Then last week I started auctioning on eBay, with the username robertsloan2art—and that’s distracting. I’ve gotten no bids yet, but plenty of reassurance that no one bids till the last day and maybe the last hours when it rolls up onto the front page. They’re getting some views, that’s something that makes me happy. I got all set up over there, joined an ACEO group, made some new friends and have been getting focused on selling my art again. I live on Social Security, but I’m starting a business—my writing and art, working at getting self supporting again so that when I do get a big novel sale or commission it doesn’t get taken out of my check. For years I worked as a street artist in New Orleans, but the physical toll it took on my bad leg and back eventually forced me to retire and after that life got hard for almost a decade. I wound up in homeless shelters and after that banged around staying with friends till my daughter got a house and kids and a new husband, so now I’m living in a good place and have finally gotten past surgery and other health problems to where I think I can build up again to being able to support myself. I know I want to. While the check is in some ways an easy ride, it gets frustrating and it just rubs me wrong that I get penalized for earning. I’ve got one book in print. Raven Dance is available at Amazon, search on title or on Robert A. Sloan author name, it’s a big fat science fiction epic with a black and red cover. I’ve sold a couple of pro stories for big money and am now also getting into doing how to draw articles at “http://www.ehow.com” where you can search on my username robertsloan2 or just skim the Art > Drawing category till you start seeing my name—a lot of my articles make it to the front page on popularity. They vary, but I’m slowly building up a complete drawing course there. I also started working on Street Sketching I: Portraits in 2004, got interrupted by health trouble and life crises but have been steadily rewriting it. I teach art in person and have always been able to get a beginner from zero to selling realistic portraits within six months to a year on meeting with them monthly in a group or one on one. So I had to relearn how to write completely! No plot, no characters, no zingy dialogue and no setting? How do I make a book interesting when it has none of the things that make a novel fun? But it’s coming along now, and the eHow articles have really been giving me a better feel for it. The technique is using pastels or colored Conte crayons on tinted art paper. So there’s an introduction! My self portrait is reasonably accurate in my icon. I’d have used my daughter’s photo, the one I used for a reference, but I thought it’d be cool to use art for an icon. I’ll be posting some art soon… watch for it.

  • This image epitomises a bygone era of elegance, style and charm – halcyon days of weekend house parties attended by “bright young things”, when afternoon tea and croquet on the lawn preceded a civilised evening of cocktails, dinner and charades. The car featured is Halle Selassie’s splendid 1933 Rolls Royce. I recaptured a sense of this era – gracefully modelled by Touchen – at Oldway Mansion, Paignton, Devon, once the home of Isaac Singer, founder of the renowed sewing machine company. Isadora Duncan, the lover of his son Paris, was often seen dancing here – a wild free spirit amidst the opulence.

  • This photo was taken in 2007 at Karnak temple (Egypt. Africa). The Karnak temple complex, universally known only as Karnak, describes a vast conglomeration of ruined temples, chapels, pylons and other buildings. It is located near Luxor in Egypt. This was ancient Egyptian Ipet-isut (“The Most Selected of Places”), the main place of worship of the Theban Triad with Amun as its head, in the monumental city of Thebes. The complex retrieves its current name from the nearby and partly surrounding modern village of el-Karnak, some 2.5km north of Luxor. / The complex is a vast open-air museum and the largest ancient religious site in the world. It is probably the second most visited historical site in Egypt, second only to the Giza Pyramids near Cairo. It consists of four main parts (precincts) of which only one is accessible for tourists and the general public. This is the Precinct of Amun-Re, and this it is also the main part of the complex and by far the largest part. The term Karnak is often understood as being the Precinct of Amun-Re only, as this is the only part most visitors normally see. The three other parts, the Precinct of Montu, the Precinct of Mut and the Temple of Amenhotep IV (dismantled), are closed to the public. There also are a few smaller temples and sanctuaries located outside the enclosing walls of the four main parts, as well as several avenues of human and ram-headed sphinxes connecting the Precinct of Mut, the Precinct of Amon-Re, and Luxor Temple. / The key difference between Karnak and most of the other temples and sites in Egypt is the length of time over which it was developed and used. Construction work began in the 16th century BC. Approximately thirty pharaohs contributed to the buildings, enabling it to reach a size, complexity, and diversity not seen elsewhere. Few of the individual features of Karnak are unique, but the size and number of features are overwhelming. Anthem / from CHESS the Musical No man, no madness Though their sad power may prevail Can possess, conquer, my country’s heart They rise to fail She is eternal Long before nations’ lines were drawn When no flags flew, when no armies stood My land was born. And you ask me why I love her Through wars, death and despair. She is the constant, we who don’t care And you wonder will I leave her—but how? I cross over borders but I’m still there now. How can I leave her? Where would I start? Let man’s petty nations tear themselves apart My land’s only borders lie around my heart. . / .. / ... I’ve made so many introductions that I don’t ever know what to say. I, of course, am here to communicate with other artists, to browse art, and to let my art be noticed. I do many mediums such as pencil, charcoal, photo manips, photography, and mixed media types. I do more photography since it seems to be my most favorite of art :) but you’ll see others once in awhile. I am happily married with a daughter. i wouldn’t trade them for the world. They keep me going when times are tough. My daughter is over a year old and everything to me. She can be a pain but I can’t help but spoil her. It’s that cuteness she gives off :P My husband, my souldmate, my knyght, is the best that has ever happened to me. If it wasn’t for him I’d be lost :) To get to know me more there are of course things I love. I adore makeup, jewelry, fashion, beauty, dragons, feathers, roses, and shall I go on? It endless… :P A typical female love of the small things that don’t really matter. My most joy is art so you may see me browsing, faving, or checking out something related most of the time. At the moment I do not have any models or fancy studio setups. I wish I did, but in the near future I should have it. My models consist of my family, sometimes my friends, and myself. I could go and search for some, but being a mom isn’t as easy as it seems. The usual not finding babysitters easily, time frame being a problem, etc… But once I get things organized I will be able to do more. My dream is to have some type of job with art. I planned on doing illustrations for cds, books, etc…, but I never really had accomplished it. I took Graphic Design for a year at college, but since I had my child I hadn’t been able to go back just yet. My knyght is the first to go so we can take it slow. Once he’s finished I’ll go back and try and get my degree. I’m not sure if I want to stick with Graphic Design, but I may go for photography or maybe general art. I want to learn it all! :P Only the future will be able to tell. I’m not sure what else to say. If anyone would like to know more about you can always ask :) I love to talk :P Until next time…

  • You painted all the trees, you didn’t know that they would die, / you varnished all the leaves, you didn’t know they couldn’t breathe This is a drawing i did inspired by a song and a friend (the best combination for an artwork in my belief)... The song in mind is Treeology by Shady Bard. The lyrics of the beginning are at the top and the rest on the artwork. Now for my friend… As you might have gathered I am a hippie at heart, an AMIABLE personality type and so is she. (Read the description provided for more information). One day whilst drawing and painting together she decided our personailties were like trees.. we provide love, shelter, care,a safe haven for friends, secrets, sorrows and love and give shade to the needy and a place to rest for the wary. we provide, life, homes, peace, love, fun, knowledge, spirit, history, pleasure, beauty to the world and the world would be boring and lifeless without us. yet sometimes, people sit in our branches, breaking them whilst gorging our fruit, picking our flowers and carving our bark. Yet silent as we are, we allow it to happen and remain quiet about the pain and sorrow we feel, only other trees understand and feel our pain (we tend to show emotions yet give no reason or meaning behind it)... I though this very appropriate and so decided to draw it… and it links in with the song… Done in ink Featured In Finks Of Ink / Music Inspired Art

A very personal insight into my brief history here at the RedBubble community I’ve done it! I’ve set myself a target of achieving 365 features in a year in RB, averaging one feature a day, and I’ve done it! But that was the cherry on the top of a gigantic multi-tiered cake that has been my year at RB… I joined RB in the first week of October 2008. At the time I was busy competing in what had started out as a FaceBook application and later evolved into inspi.re. Many of my friends there were mentioning RedBubble in discussions so I decided to join and find out for myself what all the fuss was about. Needless to say I was hooked! I soon gave up inspi.re and focused exclusively on RB. Moving to a new networking environment, especially as tightly knit as RedBubble, is always daunting and I have a lot of sympathy for new joiners who just don’t know which way to turn to first. I was very fortunate that a lot of my FaceBook competition friends also transitioned to RB at the same time as me, so in a way we came along with our own little support group already formed. Very soon our little network grew. You would have to try very hard to stay insular in RB, and before we knew it we were watching and being watched by hundreds of artists. The RB community, is viral marketing at its purest form, but without anyone actively trying to sell you anything! The comments, the groups, the featuring, the challenges, the watchlists, the favorites, the front page, the journals are all contributing factors. All of these are ways of being noticed and recognised. And, by courtesy or curiosity, as soon as you see a new name commenting on your work, you go and have a peek in their portfolio. And you bring them into your circle of friends. Then they favour one of your pictures and so you find yourself suddenly in the middle of their network. And the net spreads… What I also found fascinating, is the fact that a community which is so tightly networked, has the ability to police itself. Most people remember being new and lost, so not only they tolerate mistakes, but everyone is willing to lend a hand, to coach, to suggest, to encourage. In my year here, I have never seen criticism that wasn’t constructive. Most people follow the protocol of bmailing suggestions and comments, privately, instead of broadcasting them on the comments. I have not seen abussive behaviour and whenever I’ve seen someone get slightly out of line, it’s usually their peers that are first to slap their wrist before the big RB brother is called to intervene. Yes there have been exceptions to this, but so few and far between, compared to the sheer volume of work produced here, that I would consider them negligible. When you are actively participating in groups (and I’m a member of nearly 400 of them!) it’s sometimes easy to forget that the group hosts are all volunteers. These are people with a life and day jobs. I have unbelievable respect for their effort and contribution. They all give their time graciously and patiently (and I’m a host myself now, so I can vouch for what a thankless task it is sometimes!) to moderate, feature, run challenges, host discussions, etc. Last but not least – the friends. RedBubble is not a geeky techie photography or artist community. It is a life experience. I have made a lot of new friends here in the last year. And we’ve shared a lot more than art. I’ve read their sad stories and celebrated with them. I’ve written a cheering note or a note of sympathy. I’ve shared my own feelings and events in my life and they generously reciprocated. With some of my closest RB friends, our relationship expanded beyond RB. We may have never met, but we email, we chat on MSN, we share family moments on Facebook. We know the names of our kids and our spouses. We drop a “hi – are you OK?” bmail when we have not heard from each other in a few days. And the time comes to finally meet face to face, it’s like you’ve known each other for years! All in all, I am happy and grateful I joined RB. It’s been my crutch and my escape route when I needed it. It’s been my pick-me-up when other things were falling apart and it’s been my creative playground. But perhaps most importantly, it rekindled my passion for photography and it challenged me to discover and understand so many new facets of photography that I would have never attempted before. So a BIG FAT “THANK YOU” to all the people that make this place special! I look forward to another year of fun in the Bubble! :-) What follows here are mainly numbers… I have been totally anal in keeping track of my “achievements” in the last year. Not so that I can prove to everyone how clever I am and gloat in my success, but because these numbers tell a story about the power of a community like this one. They are the proof, if proof is needed, that you can achieve anything you want, if you set your mind to it! If you are not a fan of statistics, stop right here. I thank you for your friendship and invite you to have a look at my portfolio. If you are curious or interested, read on… / George / (Twitter: @monocotylidono) The year in numbers: Uploaded (public) pictures: 290 / Pictures featured in Groups – 365 / Pictures featured on the RedBubble Home Page – 10 / Pictures that finished in the Top Ten of a challenge – 210 / ... of which 27 Won the challenge / Total views – 41,000 People I follow in my watchlist – 225 / I am being watched by – 216 I belong to 396 groups, I co-host two of them, and my pictures have featured in at least 12 group avatars My most viewed, with 2,977 views – My most popular, with 49 favorites and 154 comments – Last but not least, I have written 6 RB Utilities which have been shared and used continuously by dozens of RB’ers… .
