  • the arizona desert can be a harsh place to drive, especially 50 years ago…radiators would overheat, tires would swell and go flat and the lack of air conditioning would test the endurance of the most hardy…then, after almost 1800 miles, there were the mountains…route 66 reached the mountains in western arizona…here the going got even worse…switch backs up and over and down would put a worthy vehicle to the test…there at the base was cool springs, the last oasis before heading up and over…here you could get fresh water, a cool drink and have the car looked over before the grueling climb toward california…pictured here was the alternative…for those unable to make it, their only hope was to be towed back to the start and get patched up for another try…

  • Established in 1931 as a National Monument, Canyon de Chelly is within the Navajo Nation in Chinle, Arizona. The White House Ruins are located on the South rim drive of the canyon. The upper ruin of the White House ruins is located in a cave and the lower ruin rose high on the cliff walls, making access to the upper ruin possible. Canyon de Chelly continues to sustain a living community of Navajo people and is unique among National Parks, as it is wholly comprised of Navajo Tribal Trust Land, home to the canyon community.

  • Tynemouth Priory was founded early in the 7th century. / In 800 the Danes plundered Tynemouth Priory. / Afterwards the monks strengthened the fortifications sufficiently to prevent / the Danes from succeeding when they attacked again in 832. / However, in 865 the church and monastery were destroyed by the Danes. / At the same time, the nuns of St Hilda, who had come there for safety, were massacred. The priory was again plundered by the Danes in 870. / / The priory was destroyed by the Danes in 875. / The small parish church of St Mary remained. / This Chapel is behind the Blue door. / When entering it is truly stepping back in time.

  • The Hampden Suspension Bridge is an historical landmark and is the only surviving suspension bridge in New South Wales that was built during the Australian colonial days. The Hampden Bridge is 77 metres long and was built in the year 1897, and named after Lord Hampden, who was the Governor of NSW from 1895 to 1899. The Hampden Bridge straddles the Kangaroo River with the Kangaroo Valley village nestled beside it. Richmond Bridge is a lasting symbol of Tasmania’s convict heritage. The sandstone arches of Australia’s oldest known large stone arch bridge have spanned Tasmania’s Coal River since its completion in 1825. The foundation stone for the Richmond Bridge was laid on 11th December 1823 and construction continued using convict labour until completion in 1825.
