  • Taken at Powis Castle, Wales. one mile south of Welshpool, perched on a rock above its terraced gardens, the red limestone Powis Castle was originally built in late 13 century by Welsh princes. However gentrification by the Herbert family and then the Clive family (of India fame) transformed a fortress into a magnificent house This home was then furnished the castle with original furniture and fine paintings. Items brought back from India by Clive are in a special exhibition in the Clive Museum. The grounds contain a world-famous garden with rare plants and enormous clipped yews. It was laid out 250 years ago following Italian and French styles and it also contains its original lead statues, an orangery and an aviary. Later an informal woodland area was created on the opposing ridge. The parkland is known for its trees, which include the tallest tree in Britain, an 180 foot high Douglas fir.

  • Eilean Donan Castle was built in 1220 for Alexander II as a defence against the Vikings. The Vikings who raided, settled and controlled much of the North of Scotland and the Western Isles between 800 and 1266. By the late 13th century it had become a stronghold of the Mackenzies of Kintail .In April 1719 the castle was occupied by Spanish troops attempting to start another Jacobite Rising. The castle was recaptured, and then demolished, by three Royal Navy frigates on 10–13 May 1719. The Spanish troops were defeated a month later at the Battle of Glen Shiel. For the best part of 200 years, the stark ruins of Eilean Donan lay neglected, abandoned and open to the elements, until Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911. Along with his Clerk of Works, Farquar Macrae, he dedicated the next 20 years of his life to the reconstruction of Eilean Donan, restoring her to her former glory. The castle was rebuilt according to the surviving ground plan of earlier phases and was formally completed in the July of 1932.

  • We had a very stormy morning the day I took this series of photos and it resulted in me getting soaked. LOL We had lots of heavy wind, Heavy rain, A few thunderstorms and a Storm surge along the coastline and the Swan river. The historical Crawley Edge boatshed was flooded right up to the pier and the boatshed itself seems to show some damage with a big gap running along the left hand side of the roof as well as the right hand wall. The boatshed was built in the 1930’s and was restored by it’s current owner in the early 2000’s after being in a dilapidated and run down state for many years. EOS 500D.

  • Lambley viaduct Lambley viaduct crosses the South Tyne river in the North Pennines, Northumberland, as a series of elegant stone arches. More than 260m long, it once carried the Halt- whistle to Alston railway which was opened in 1852 to haul coal from the Alston mines. After the line was closed in 1976, the viaduct decayed. / Trees began to sprout from the stone arches, vandals pushed the stone copings into the river, and spandrel masonry began to fall off. In 1991, spurred to action by the Northern Viaduct Trust which had already acquired and repaired Smardale Gill Viaduct in Cumbria. / / The British Rail Property Board agreed to repair the viaduct and hand it over to the North Pennine Heritage Trust, who would maintain it in the future. The restoration was carried out by Charles Blackett-Ord, a structural engineer specialising in conservation, who restored Smardale Gill viaduct in 1991.

  • Ruins of Slane Abbey , Co Meath Ireland! / ©MCN:CA95B-EFEE3-A4A75 St. Patrick has become synonymous with things Irish; from shamrocks to the shortage of snakes on this Isle, but there was a time when he was viewed as a foreign Christian missionary come to convert Ireland’s Celtic pagans. This he did with great symbolic flare. As the Druids celebrated their feast day on the Hill of Tara, Patrick prepared the Easter feast on the Hill of Slane. He lit his paschal fire at Slane, before the Druids could kindle their sacred fire at Tara. Seeing the flames at Slane, the Druids, warned Laegaire, the High King, that if Patrick’s fire was not put out immediately, it would burn forever in Ireland. The rest is history.( from Meath.ie site)

  • Como, Colorado This little town is one which I love, virtually a Ghost Town these days, it offers up a glimpse of the past with the wild west, with how time completely stands still here. One of my favorite places to shoot at, it has a lot to be seen, especially with how much of it is preserved. Every time I go there to shoot I always stop to say hello to the Horses as you enter the town. These Horses are working Horses, and it shows…but they are also very beautiful, not to mention friendly. Captured on my Minolta 55 using a Sigma 29-90mm Mini Macro Zoom lens, blended HDR …hope you all like it! / —-John
