  • One of the most historic cafes in Zürich, since it first opened its doors in 1912 the Odeon has been patronized by such figures as Lenin and Trotsky, Mata Hari, Thornton Wilder, Mussolini, James Joyce and various other colorful types. Decorated in the art nouveau style and located on the open Limmatquai plaza in Old Town, it is one of the most central spots in the city, and all day long-until well after midnight-people pop in for a quick coffee or a drink or a bite of lunch, and then linger to watch the crowds walk by. • My cesspool of knowledge about little red wagons has been spent on the previous images of this marvelous mode of transporting. For millenniums people have used the wagon in some form or another for transporting of goods and people. It wasn’t until the last couple centuries a self powered version came on the scene. The idea caught on quickly form the 1st steam powered buggies to all the wide range of transportation we have today. The improvements of the millenniums are nothing to compare with the rapid increase of technology in the past 200 years. I often wonder to what extent these rapid improvements in technology have degraded our ways of life. Are out morals and since of family what they use to be? Have our standards and codes of conduct decreased from what they were when wagons and sleds were the preferred mode of moving goods form place to place…..This wagon is sitting on the Tipton Place in Cades Cove ,Great Smoky Mountain NP

  • This is the historical covered bridge in Buttonwood, Pennsylvania. It has been completely restored and is faithfully maintained as the national treasure that it truly is. The bridge was originally built in 1898. For its centennial anniversary, it was fully restored to the beautiful condition that you see here. This bridge is listed on the National Register Of Historic Places. These old structures are called “covered bridges”. They were quite common in this region of the US. In the horse & buggy days, they were much more than just a bridge. They were also a safe place to escape from a quick storm. They became a traditional spot for young couples to share a private kiss. As these unique bridges fell into disrepair, many of them were simply lost forever. Historians recognized the beauty and importance of the remaining covered bridges. As many of them as possible have since been saved. This one is a very fine example of the true Pennsylvania Covered Bridge. As I was taking this shot today, an extremely fast moving thunderstorm hit like a ton of bricks. I was shooting a short distance downstream from the bridge, when out of nowhere, a strong wind began to blow. A few seconds latter, I was hit by a wall of rain. I grabbed my camera, tripod and gadget bag and ran back to my van. By the time got inside, I was completely soaked to the core! Oh, what we do for our art. LOL The storm continued for the next hour or so and I just hoped that I had gotten all of the photos that I needed. The gentle stream beneath the bridge had become a small river, so shooting this subject was done for the day. This photo was captured with a Canon EOS 10D body fitted with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L Zoom lens, at the 40mm focal length. The shutter speed was 0.5 sec at f/6. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto, tripod was used. Your comments are always welcome! Constructive criticism is appreciated. © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist.
