Big Red is located at the entrance of the Holland Harbor. It is the only lighthouse that has a name and it is the most photographed of all the lighthouses on the Great Lakes.

Wawatam Lighthouse at the entrance to the Marina in St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It stands at the end of an old railroad dock which was once used to load railroad cars onto a ferry to transport them between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. The city of St. Ignace has renamed he lighthouse after the 338-foot Chief Wawatam rail car ferry. It rises 52 feet in the air at the end of a newly constructed Huron Boardwalk and serves as a sentinel to the city’s marina. The beacon projects 13.2 miles over Lake Huron and will serve as a navigational aid to boaters. This lighthouse was acquired from the Monroe Michigan Welcome Center in 2004, was moved to St. Ignace in five sections, and went operational on August 20th, 2006.
Cape Spear is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located at the most easterly point of land in North America, it is now a national historic site, after many years of providing continuous service as an manned lighthouse. In 1839 it was restored in appearance and shows how a lightkeeper and his family might have lived in the mid-19th century. During the second world war, Cape Spear was used by allied forces to protect the entrance to St. John’s Harbor.

Located off the Mid North Coast of NSW Australia, it is the most distant from the coast and only one of two island lighthouses in NSW. The original buildings were built in 1880 and housed 2 families – 1 person died on the island. The lighthouse was automated in 1975. The keepers cottages have been abandoned since 1975. Access to the island is only by helicopter and restricted by National Parks & Wildlife. National Parks opened the building for public access for 1 weekend in August 2008 – 226 people were lucky enough to visit the island. Further info about the island, look at South Solitary Island The buildings will be opened again in 2010 – contact Precision Helicopters for further info Photo of the island from a distance

Situated 200 feet above sea level atop the Navesink Highlands, Twin Lights has stood as a sentinel over the treacherous coastal waters of northern New Jersey since 1828. Named Navesink Lightstation, it became known as the “Twin Lights of Highlands” to those who used its mighty beacons to navigate. As the primary seacoast light for New York Harbor, it was the best and brightest light on the Atlantic Coast for generations of seafarers.Architect Joseph Lederle designed the new structure with two non-identical towers linked by keepers’ quarters and storage rooms. This unique design made it easy to distinguish Twin Lights from other nearby lighthouses. At night, the two beacons, one flashing and the other fixed, provided another distinguishing characteristic. With the development of automated lights, offshore light towers, radar, and other sophisticated navigational equipment in the 20th century, manned lighthouses gradually became obsolete. While there are still working lighthouses in the United States, many have been decommissioned—a fate that befell Twin Lights in 1949. After 121 years of service, the most powerful coastal light in America was extinguished. The historical information about this lighthouse

St Aubin’s Fort predates Elizabeth Castle (near St Helier) and together they provided protection to the broad sweep of St Aubin’s Bay, and to the harbours at St Aubin and later St Helier. The Fort was built in the 1540s, to protect the harbour at St Aubin, which was the safest harbour in the island at the time. It was used extensively by merchants, who then built their fine houses nearby. This is one of three chimneys on the Lighthouse Keepers Assistant’s cottage at the lighthouse at Palm Beach headland, Sydney. Palm Beach is approximately 60km north of Sydney’s CBD. The headland where the lighthouse is approx. 350 feet high and it rises steeply from the beach. The cottages were built at the same time as the lighthouse in 1880 and the lighthouse started operations in 1881. At this time it was considered a remote outpost. Now Palm Beach is Sydney’s most northern suburb. The Lighthouse Keeper and the Lighthouse Keeper Assistants had to be married before they would be considered for working in remote areas. It was thought that being married would create a harmonious atmosphere. Many children were born in remote outposts such as this one. In the early part of the 1900’s, (1912) the lighthouse was automated. The cottages were abandoned to the elements. They were re-inhabited during WWII and then abandoned soon after the war ended. In the 1960’s the cottages were leased to various people who rebuilt/restored them as best they could. 1997 the cottages and land were handed over to the National Parks and Wildlife Service who has since restored the cottages further. They also run tours up to the top of the lighthouse. There is no running water or toilets up on the headland so if you want to trek up there be sure to take some water with you and go to the loo before you leave the carpark. It’s a very steep climb in parts and you’ll need water along the way, especially in summer. It’s a great part of Sydney to visit and well worth the effort. You’ll be rewared with cool breezes and fantastic views. This photo is a blend of 3 – HDR and tonemapped Canon EOS 400D / Canon Lens 18-55mm
