A little slice of the history of Edinburgh, the Governor’s House on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. / Looking quite medieval, this is actually an early 19th century structure, the remains of the old Calton Gaol, a prison that was once on the historic hill. / Atmospheric evening fog and illumination came together to make this something special. Old abandoned farm house I came across in the middle of one of the many apple orchards here in Michigan. For some reason, this is my favorite piece in my portfolio. I can’t figure out exactly why, it just is. I like the way it almost glows, yet it’s so dark. Established in 1931 as a National Monument, Canyon de Chelly is within the Navajo Nation in Chinle, Arizona. The White House Ruins are located on the South rim drive of the canyon. The upper ruin of the White House ruins is located in a cave and the lower ruin rose high on the cliff walls, making access to the upper ruin possible. Canyon de Chelly continues to sustain a living community of Navajo people and is unique among National Parks, as it is wholly comprised of Navajo Tribal Trust Land, home to the canyon community.

Garden steps at the historic Bleak House located in Knoxville,Tn.The Bleak House(also known as The Confederate Memorial Hall)is an antebellum mansion built before the Civil war.The house was a wedding present for Robert Houston Armstrong and wife Louisa Franklin.The Armstrong’s named the house after Charles Dickens” novel of the same name.The house was used as General Longstreet’s headquarters during the seige of Knoville during the Civil War. / The house today is opened for tours and the beautiful landscaped garden is a popular location for weddings.The garden is sectioned by stone walls and pillars with a lovely fountain as it’s centerpiece.The steps seen in this photograph are at the very back of the garden which looks over the Tennessee River. / NRHP Reference # 84000369

The sheet caught the light and dominated this shot so I have fiddled quite a bit to try and subdue the blow-out. Hope it worked. This particular piece of machinery holds unpleasant memories for me – my finger was squashed between rollers (dumb kids playing where they shouldn’t!!!) – tough lesson learned! This abandoned building is located in Nelson, New brunswick. I’m not sure what this building was used for, I can’t find any history on it online. / It has a sign that reads; LOL No 147 and the year of the building is 1906. It was definitely creepy though! -cross processed /

Just off the Lawnmarket (a stretch of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland) is Makars’ Court. Within the Courtyard is The Writers’ Museum which is housed in Lady Stair’s House (built in 1622 for Sir William Grey of Pittendrum). In 1719, the building was bought by Lady Stair. The museum is dedicated to the lives and work of Scotland’s great literary figures, including Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. Makars’ Court, which takes its name from the Scots word for a poet, is an evolving national literary monument in which inscribed commemorative flagstones celebrate Scottish writers from the 14th century John Barbour to Ian Crichton-Smith who died in 1998. New flagstones are added on a regular basis. Featured in Cottage Style / Featured in “Old Things – 3 per Day” We recently visited some dear friends who were living in Painswick, Gloucestershire, in England. Originally from America, they have lived in England for short periods of time (3 or 4 years) due to work. This was our last visit to their little cottage home in the lovely village, as they have now moved back to the states, but they are already planning to move back as soon as possible. We have enjoyed our frequent trips to visit them and this lovely old cottage. The cottage dates back almost 300 years (sometime in the 1700’s) and is a feature of the well known Tibbiwell Lane. It is as beautiful inside as it is outside. This door front scene was used as a magazine/catalogue cover for the company Scotts of Stow, and countless visitors to the village have taken photos of this beautiful and historic home. The property used to be two separate cottages but were combined at some unknown date. Please do click on the photo to view larger and please enjoy. Wawatam Lighthouse at the entrance to the Marina in St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It stands at the end of an old railroad dock which was once used to load railroad cars onto a ferry to transport them between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. The city of St. Ignace has renamed he lighthouse after the 338-foot Chief Wawatam rail car ferry. It rises 52 feet in the air at the end of a newly constructed Huron Boardwalk and serves as a sentinel to the city’s marina. The beacon projects 13.2 miles over Lake Huron and will serve as a navigational aid to boaters. This lighthouse was acquired from the Monroe Michigan Welcome Center in 2004, was moved to St. Ignace in five sections, and went operational on August 20th, 2006.

FEATURED IN THE CANADA GROUP / I was intrigued to locate and photograph this old home, which now sits empty, after hearing stories about one of this region’s most famous citizens. Harry Lee, a locomotive engineer, apparently retired from the CP railway in his early sixties to take care of his ailing father struggling with dimentia, who lived with him. There are many stories of his father’s “unusual behaviour” which kept Harry very busy indeed. Harry collected a pension from the Canadian Pacific Railway until his death at 102 years of age….a highly unusual accomplishment. The following historical information was obtained from “Vanishing BC”: / http://www.michaelkluckner.com/bciw.html “Reputedly the oldest building in North Bend, British Columbia the house occupied by Harry Lee the legendary locomotive engineer, until his death at age 102 (in 2004) stands on 1st Street on the opposite side of the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline from the site of the CPR hotel. / “It is a classic little 1-1/2 storey house that may have been a CPR design-all the land on the river side of the tracks was and is owned by the CPR and leased to the occupants, who own their buildings. The original occupant is unknown. / Harry Lee, who lived in the house for as long as anyone can remember, is the son of pioneers at Keefers-upstream on the same side of the river, where there are still areas called Upper Lee and Lower Lee, although all the historic buildings are apparently demolished. Lee’s father, an Englishman, was a farmer who supplied milk to the railway. The house retains Lee’s personality—for example, the metal cooler (vented to the outside like a meat safe) is plastered with old Irish Sweepstakes tickets.” layers and textural effects were applied in CS4 /

FEATURED IN IMAGEWRITING (2/24) PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP PLEASE VIEW LARGE. / I was directed by long time citizens of this quiet old railroad town of North Bend, BC to another very old local heritage home that sits right beside the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks. It’s a house that is definitely time-worn and no doubt full of stories, family memories and a rich history spanning many decades. I expected to find this house empty like Mr. Lee’s old home…but a light glowed warmly in the front porch, a bird cage hung by the front door and a vase full of flowers sat cheerily in the window. I couldn’t help but think of that very old song that both Tom Jones and Johnny Cash made famous….to name but a few! _“The old home town looks the same, / As I step down from the train, / And there to meet me is my mama and my papa. / Down the road I look, and there comes Mary, / Hair of gold and lips like cherries. / It’s good to touch the green, green grass of home. The old house is still standing, / Though the paint is cracked and dry, / And there’s the old oak tree that I used to play on. / Down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary, / Hair of gold and lips like cherries. / It’s good to touch the green, green grass of home. Yes, they’ll all come to see me, / Arms reaching, smiling sweetly. / It’s good to touch the green, green grass of home.
