Gopher Snake close-up on Figueroa Mountain, Santa Ynez, CA One of the most widespread snakes in North America, its range extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific, as far north as southern Canada, and as far south as Veracruz, Mexico. This species can reach five to six feet in length, and are among the more “human-friendly” species of North American snakes, mainly due to the fact that they are not venomous, hunt vermin (hence the name) and are easily raised and bred in captivity. When startled or angry, they will hiss very loud and rattle their tails. This is why they are sometimes mistaken for a rattlesnake.Habitat: Found in a wide variety of habitats, including deserts, prairies, woodlands, brushlands, coniferous forests, and even cultivated land. Gopher snakes often live in discarded or conquered gopher holes. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- Consider these images as companions. :-)
Kitten hissing at our dog which is about 10 times the kittens size. By the way the dog was lying quietly (he is used to cats) on the floor but being a small cat better safe than sorry… Have a look at my other photos. For the joyous Lucky, who pulled these words out of me, and made me dream of lime green clogs & the deity of candy: I am the blood red spine with the bruised tailbone / I am coconut rice with extra lime leaves / I am the Medusa snarl with blue tangles / I am ink in blood and pen in hand / I am liquorice allsorts minus the pink / I am Bodie and Doyle with winged collars / And I am no longer afraid / of the dark For the photo theme of the June Melbourne Writers’ Meeting
Common (or European) Kingfisher Alcedo atthis A fairly widespread but localised resident throughout most of England and Wales, although scarce in Scotland. Usually found in freshwater areas, although some move to the coast in winter, when food is scarcer. / With brilliant blue upperparts, deep red under parts, white face patches and unique shape Kingfishers are impossible to misidentify. Widespread in most of Europe, generally easier to see at reed beds and marshes than along rivers. Trips by punt through the Danube Delta (Romania) or the Sultan Marshes (Turkey) guarantee lots of views and they are also easy to see around the seashores of Crete. / / There are an estimated 3300-5500 breeding pairs in Britain, mainly England and Wales with 1300- 2100 breeding pairs in Ireland. / Perhaps as much as a third of the World population lives in Europe with 47- 67,000 breeding pairs. Though estimates from many countries vary widely. /
Madagascar hissing cockroach… The Madagascar hissing cockroach also known as Hissing roach or simply Hisser, is one of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 2-3 inches at maturity. They are from the island of Madagascar off the African coast, where they can be found in rotting logs. Unlike most cockroaches, they are excellent climbers and can easily scale smooth glass.
The Griffon Vulture It is a typical Old World vulture in appearance, with a white bald head, very broad wings and a short tail. It has a white neck ruff and yellow bill. The buff body and wing coverts contrast with the dark flight feathers. Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals which it finds by soaring over open areas, often moving in flocks. It grunts and hisses at roosts or when feeding on carrion. It breeds on crags in mountains in southern Europe, north Africa, and Asia, laying one egg. Griffon Vultures may form loose colonies. The population is mostly resident.

Please meet our new kitty, Streak. We think she has a large dose of Siamese in her – eyes which look very siamese, that classical “look” which only a Siamese gives, and a siamese-type body build. We think she’s Female. We think sh’es gorgeous. She’s wild, although not feral, quite skittish, and loves a “safe” spot to hide in. She is reasonably happy to be cuddled, she’s quite calm while you do so. but, she likes to go back to a safe spot (small, relatively dark, and hidden), however, each cuddle is getting a little longer. Misty is not exactly please about this intruder on HER domain! She’ll just have to get used to her. We hope you think she’s gorgeous, too. Read the full story here

This is the single remaining parent of the four goslings I recently posted. I’m not sure what happened to the other parent, but I suspect it’s not good news. As a single parent, this goose has to do double parent duty, and is very protective of the goslings – it hisses and gestures at anyone getting too close to its young. The dominant gosling is now imitating this behavior and also hisses and gestures at passers by. Meet Pebbles a new edition to the family. The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from other felines and felids, is a small predatory carnivorous species of crepuscular mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and its ability to hunt vermin, snakes, scorpions, and other unwanted household pests. It has been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years. A skilled predator, the cat is known to hunt over 1,000 species for food. It can be trained to obey simple commands. Individual cats have also been known to learn on their own to manipulate simple mechanisms, such as doorknobs and toilet handles.Cats use a variety of vocalizations and types of body language for communication, including meowing, purring, “trilling”, hissing, growling, squeaking, chirping, clicking, and grunting.Cats may be the most popular pet in the world, with over 600 million in homes all over the world. They are also bred and shown as registered pedigree pets. This hobby is known as “cat fancy”.
