In Japan dolls are not just enjoyed by children, but treated as works of art. In the Edo period (AD1603-1867), it was customary for the Bride-to-be’s parents to give their daughter a Japanese doll. It was believed that Japanese dolls can take away bad luck from the bride. Japanese dolls were a kind of scapegoat to avoid bad luck for bride. Recently this tradition has almost completely vanished, except for in the Japanese countryside. Dolls are also used in festivals in Japa. The Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival/Girl’s Festival) is celebrated on March 3. On this day, families with girls wish their daughters a successful and happy life. Dolls are displayed in the house together with peach blossoms. The doll festival has its origin in a Chinese custom in which bad fortune is transferred to dolls and then removed by abandoning the doll on a river.
