For my friend and fellow artist and writer: An Interview - Introducing Hilton M Briscoe They said you could have ten questions, they did not say where you could start counting from - 0)What do you do when you are not doing art, writing or photography? / / What do I do when not writing? Listen to music mostly, I am always listening to music. I am usually on myspace trying to get people to talk to me, no one ever does, lol. 1) Who do you think you are? This is a very serious question. Who are you? / Who am I? To be honest I have no idea, I am only 18 and I haven’t lived enough to know myself. One thing I do know about myself is I am not the kind of person that is happy sitting in the crowd living my life like everyone else, this is true in all areas of my life. I am easily depressed as some people might have noticed but I have never seriously considered suicide, living a normal life with a 9 to 5 job and a constant routine that is only changed by government sanctioned holidays is something that makes me feel like I would seriously consider suicide. That probably makes me sound lazy and I would disagree, I’m just don’t fit into normal society. I have to make my own way in this world, I probably need peoples help cause this world confuses me sometimes. 2) Who are the most important people in your life and why? or Who do you love? This includes pets. / My parents are the most important people in my life, my father is getting on in age(he is 64 now) and is really ill so he doesn’t have much time left, when he dies I think both me and my mother will be devastated, but I will try to help her through the rough time. / King is another important creature in my life, he is my dog and he is 3 years old this November the first. I was with his mother while she was giving birth to him, he was tiny and I thought he was dead but he wasn’t. He was named after Kind Diamond(thrash metal legend) because when he was born he had a diamond pattern in white fur on the back of his neck(he has predominately black fur), it’s kind of funny because all through Sally’s(the mother) pregnancy I was telling myself I wouldn’t name my puppy something stupid like King or Boxer or one of those names men trying to overcompensate give their bulldogs. / I would say anyone who can make me happy when I am depressed is important in my life, so that’s all my friends and a few people on Redbubble. Out of the lot I will give Lexxy a special mention, she is my best friend and I love her to bits, she is going through a rough patch in her life down in London with her boyfriend, I wish I could help her but there is little I can do. 3) What are your dreams like, the ones you aspire to about the future. You can also share some of your sicker dreams too if you want:-) / To be honest I never remember my dreams, I have had quite a few nightmares and I absolutely love them. My favourite one was when I was visiting a travelling circus, I can’t remember the details because it is a childhood nightmare but it turned out it was a circus full of cannibalistic clowns and a dragon that they sacrificed children too. I loved that nightmare, I was about 6 when I had it. Ooh another nightmare I had actually terrified me and I woke up sweating when I dreamt it(I was about 4). In the nightmare there was a woman who was kidnapping children and she came to Coventry, all the kids in my neighbourhood decided to run away so we could hide from her and we all moved into the countryside, we lived in a small shanty town made from sheet metal we found on a farmers tip and lived in it happily for a few days. But the woman found us and she crept into our little village while we all slept at night and started putting us all in one at a time into her magic bag(in dungeons and dragons terms it would be called a “True Bag of Holding”) but one of the kids woke up before she could put him in her bag and he screamed which woke us all up, we all started running in every direction in the pitch black countryside night and I can remember crawling through a hedge and running as fast as I could through a field but she caught me, I woke up as she was putting me in her bag. Fantastic nightmare, I didn’t tell it very well, you had to be there, lol. 4) What is your favorite painting? -favorite photo? -favorite song? -favorite poem? -favorite short story? -favorite child’s nursery rhyme? -favorite child’s lullaby -favorite child’s story? and -favorite (any kind of art, your choice)? / My favourite painting would be “House of the Hanged Man” by Cezanne, I have never really thought of my favourite photo, I would say a photo of my family and a another family we were friends with on holiday in Rhyl(North Wales) with the sea in the background. My favourite song? I could name hundreds, but right now I will say “The Hunger” by The Distillers. I do have a favourite poem but I can’t remember it right now, lol but I remember it is about a person with a hyper sense of self importance, extreme arrogance and even psychopathic tendencies. My favourite short story would be my life, lol. I like 3 blind mice, I don’t know any lullabies, lol. My favourite child story would be “The Farm”, yes it’s not technically a child’s story but it has talking animals in and I loved that even if I didn’t get what the story was really about. My favourite kind of art would be either psychedelic or horror art, maybe a mix of both. 5) What do you like and what do you dislike about your homeland? If you could live somewhere else, where do you think you would choose and why? / What do I like about England? The fact that rock and metal was born here, lol. I dislike most other things about England and can’t wait to get away from it. I would love to live in Norway or Finland, I’m a Viking at heart, lol. 6) Who do you like on red bubble? / I like you, one of my favourite writers. Marlo and Ash Sivils are definitely my favourite artists. There are a load of very inspirational people on redbubble, Kathleen and Robert Knapman are just 2 out of the loads I could name. Oh then there is Gordon, he’s great at just about everything and I don’t think he is completely human, burningark is like the goth lord and I look up to him artistically and musically. 7) Why do you like art, writing, and photography? / I have a bad relationship with art to be honest, often I am left feeling empty by it which is why I get so enthusiastic about the artists I do get, which includes Ash, burningark, Gordon, Kathleen and Robert. / I love writing, it is so easy for me and I am good at it, I am not good at very much, lol. / Photography to me is about capturing exact moments in time, some cultures believe that a camera steals part of your soul when you have your picture taken, I don’t believe this but I am certainly uneasy about getting my picture taken. That has more to do with self esteem to be honest. 8) What do you think your two best poems are so far and what do you think your two best pieces of art are so far have been? Please share them with us below? / My 2 best poems? I have no doubt my favourite is I Dreamt of Heaven, and I suppose my other is Masks, Pens and Truths I Kept Hidden My best pictures are easily Nightmare – God Got His Revenge When I Took This Picture, and My Dog Is So Gay He Plays Dramatic Dead, the second one is of king. 9) Who are your influences – who or what inspires you in your creative work? / Dani Filth’s(of Cradle of Filth) inspires me, his lyrics are so dark and melodramatic I hope one day I could write like he does. 10) For the last question, I get to ask you the same thing since we interviewed each other – Now for my last question I shall ask the age old question(with my little story to explain how you had the foresight to bring the 3 things). You are marooned on a desert island, you had a premonition in your dreams the night before that it was going to happen and you quite fancy a nice break on a desert island so you decide to not try and stop it, what 3 things did you bring along with you and why? / 1)I would bring a manual on how to construct a small water powered power station / 2)I would bring a CD player and Cradle of Filth’s album “Nymphetamine” which would already be in the CD player so still counts as one item(in my logic, lol) / 3)I shall steal your 3rd item, a hot man who loves me. lol Thanks a lot my friend, smiles from Jane:-)

The impossible has once again occurred… I’ve sold another shirt. (Cue dramatic soap opera’esque score as I look directly at you and raise one eyebrow in a confused and somewhat devilish fashion while stroking the bristles of my beard.) A heck of a young photographer by the name of RIA ROSA QUINTO made official the the purchase of the above shirt that pokes fun at the oh’ so fun-poke-able Paris Hilton in a round about way and to her I have only this to say… THANKS!! youapparentlyhaveterribletasteinclothes but THANKS!! ;) Seriously though, I appreciate anyone and everyone who plunks down any of their hard earned money for my goofy stuff and I hope that she thinks it was worth it. Interview With A Fellow Writer – Introducing JANE Á PARIS I know in the rules of the competition are that I must seek a writer I do not know very well… and though I have been a fan of Janes for a while now I feel I do not know her personally. This interview is my chance to get to know her and hopefully win a few Boredom points. Okay well I hope you enjoy the interview, I certainly did. Introducing JANE Á PARIS At Death’s Dark Door I am standing at death’s dark door / I see his other lovers lying strewn about on the floor / I don’t want to be one of his terribly intimate lovers / I don’t want to end up under his dirty covers / His hands are cruelly cold / And he is beyond astonishingly old / He glares icily and draws me eminently near / I have so much sorrow and so much to fear / The foul stench of his frozen breath / Fortells gloomily of my impending death / I fear him intensely, however I have no choice but to comply / He has a hold on me that is beyond what I can possibly defy / I know that I will lie with him in his wintry garden of foxglove / I know that he will be my last and forever love / As he takes me, I feel his frigid overwhelming embrace / As he enters me, I feel myself numbed with death’s lovely grace / As he indifferently lays me on the chilly and soiled floor / I see another maiden waiting hopelessly and mournfully at his dark door… / I have been left desolate of continued life / I am on free flow to the eternal afterlife / / JANE Á PARIS Copyright ©2008 JANE Á PARIS Description - / This is about being ill, having no control, and knowing that death is your courter. This is about how cold and unfeeling he is, he will take you and then move on to his next victim. To him you are insignificant…life moves on, and so does death. What’s your real name and what name would you like to have? / My real name is a secret, otherwise people would hunt me down and kill me. However the name I would like to have and do have and use is JANE Á PARIS, it is my pen name. It is my artist name. I use it for all my art. It has a lot of meaning and significance for me. There is actually a big story behind it. But too long, detailed and deep for me to explain here. It also involves a lot of political abuse. What is your favorite piece of music? / I don’t really have favorites in general just because there is so much fantastic music out there, but if I had to pick probably one of my favorite songs would be – In My Daughter’s Eyes by Martina McBride. I love my two children very much, and this song is so inspirational, uplifting and touching about loving a child, and a child’s love. / I also love Brahms’s Lullaby by Celine Dion, it has always been my favorite children’s lullaby. I loved it when I was a child. What is your favorite time of the day? / I like graveyard and the wee hours of the morning, because I am always trying to escape from people and I find this the most quiet and relaxing time of day, where I can be alone with my thoughts. What would you say is your major inspiration for writing your poems? / Mostly I write from the heart and from personal experience. Life is my inspiration for a lot of my writing. Life can be very painful, very joyful, and/or very humorous. I write about a lot of the pain I have experienced in life, however I also write uplifting, inspiring, thoughtful things too. A lot of the time my sense of humor shines through whatever I am doing. After all, when you are having a hard time in life, sometimes no matter how bad it is, it helps to keep you going to have a laugh at it or see the funniness of it. My children also inspire me a lot in my writing, as do past events in my life. Some of my favorite writers are – Robert Frost, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, Archibald MacLeish, William Stafford, Ray Bradbury, Tennessee Williams, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. On your profile you say you are an “expressionistic” painter but you only have one(very cute) picture in you portfolio, why is that? / Because WRITE now I am a starving artist. I honestly have no money to upload my art yet. I am also a little under the weather (ill), this is just the straight forward truth, so some days I have a hard time getting anything done, however I have a real fire in my heart for creativity, art, writing, and photography that is hard to extinguish and I always seem to get something done, whether it is writing, art or photography. I have been concentrating on writing right now because it is something I can create and upload easily. I am hoping to upload some of my paintings soon. Your art is something that interests me, you are a great poet and so by my logic you must be a great painter, what are your paintings like? / Thank you so much for the compliment, I am glad that you think so and that you like what I write. My paintings are very expressionistic too. One of the first artist I met on this site asked me why my writing seemed a little on the dark side, and I said that is probably because I am a little disturbed. I know a lot of great artist in history were. So I am not afraid to admit this. All you have to do is look through an artists biography book to see this. It is also because I write about things that are disturbing quite often, (not always), like political abuse, sexual abuse, torture, harassment, financial, spiritual, physical, and emotional abuse. These are reasons that I am disturbed:-), mostly because I have been abused and continue to be abused because of my politics. / I have a deep love for expressionism – ‘Expressionistic artist sought to develop pictorial forms which would express their innermost feelings rather than represent the external world. Expressionist painting is intense, passionate and highly personal, based on the concept of the painter’s canvas as a vehicle for demonstrating emotions. Violent, unreal color and dramatic brushwork make the typical expressionistic painting quiver with vitality.’ This is what I try to achieve when I paint, and I think I quite often do because I am a very expressionistic and emotional painter. My favorite painters are Beckman, Van Gogh, Heckel, Jawlensky, Kirchner, Kokoschka, Marc, Munch (The Father of Expressionism), Nolde, Pechstein, Roualt, Schiele, Schmidt-Rottluff, and Soutine. The Power of Dreams On a clear day, you can see forever… The power of dreams / The power of our dreams / Not letting go of something / No matter how hard they beat on you / Paint like your heart demands / Paint like your soul commands / Paint the pain in your body / Paint the insults in your mind / Paint inspiration of a higher sort / Paint the world in all of its confusion / If you let go of your dream / Then they will have succeeded in taking your soul / They have already taken your body and mind / Your soul belongs to you and ultimately to God / You must believe – if you quit believing – no matter how hard it gets / You’ll be dead JANE Á PARIS Copyright ©2008 JANE Á PARIS Description - / This is about believing in yourself, through all kinds of hardship. It is about holding onto a dream, and making it a reality…And to let go, means only death to body, soul, mind, and heart. In Redbubble there are many thousands of fantastic artists and poets, who would you say are your favourites and why? / I have only been on site for a little over a month, however in that short amount of time I have met many interesting artist from all over the world, which is a real thrill for me. There is nothing like being able to share a common interest and love of art, writing, and photography with a whole group of really talented, knowledgeable, and experienced artists, writers, and photographers from all over the world. Thank Goodness for Redbubble, what a find and what a great idea! I have a lot of people on my watchlist, actually 65 as of this moment. I like to get around and I really like to meet people. Some of my favorites are: Shanina Conway – beautiful very talented painter, Peter Davidson – wonderful photographer and great writer, Jarko – sublime artist, Tony Ryan – splendid photographer and sensitive writer, Tommyjo – charming and very talented artist and elegant writer, Hilton M Briscoe -excellent writer and artist, budrfli – super talented photographer and lovely writer, Andrew May from Circus Gallery – magnificent painter and creator of sculptures, redbubble addict – super talented with colors and designs and very wonderful writer, clone42 – super photograher and artist and splendid writer, Ushna Sardar – a very inspiring and uplifting writer and beautiful photographer. Others I like are – Rachael Hope, Russell Holder, Darkmonkey, Keith Williams, Damian, Janine Peterson, rrohn (he has only one story posted, but it is a killer of a story, very good), DBA Lehane, Aurora Pintore, LamondoofCowal, seraph, melodious, oscarelizondo, peterT, butchart, zolton, Faizan Qureshi, Alix Purcell, Ruben Flanagan, Lys, and the list goes on and on. There are so many super talented people on red bubble. So much creativity in one spot, it is almost overwhelming, and very exquisitely enjoyable. I have been lucky to meet many people so far and I have made many friends. And I have just started, I know there are many more to meet. As I read through your written works I can’t help but notice the way you write seems so mundane but so interesting and thoughtful, how do you achieve this? / It is because I write from the heart and from personal experience a lot. The best stuff I write comes from my insides, where I am often hurting deeply because of negative events happening in my life. I speak the truth when I write, with no fear of what someone knows or what someone thinks. I am a very expressionistic person in my writing and my art. It is also a form of therapy for me and an escape. Do you have any tips for a writer who is dependant on making things sound epic to compensate for his lack of mastery over detail? / Keep trying, that is how you master anything through effort and experience, and not being afraid to make mistakes. And also to be open to constructive and positive criticism, that is part of the process of learning to be better too. When did you start writing and why? / I have been writing all of my life, but I probably started more seriously when I started painting about twelve years ago. What is your favorite childhood story or nursery rhyme? / Well, so many children’s stories, nursery rhymes, and songs are actually quite disturbing when you really examine them. One of my favorite songs was always Rock-a-bye baby, and that was about a baby falling out of a tree. / Rock-a-bye baby on the tree top, when the wind blows the cradle will rock, when the bough breaks the cradle will fall, down will come baby, cradle and all. / I loved singing The Ants Go Marching when I was a kid. I read Black Beauty when I was a kid, and I also read James and the Giant Peach. I loved both of these stories. I read Love You Forever to my children and it made me cry every time. I always loved the story of The Three Bears too. Now for my last question I shall ask the age old question(with my little story to explain how you had the foresight to bring the 3 things). You are marooned on a desert island, you had a premonition in your dreams the night before that it was going to happen and you quite fancy a nice break on a desert island so you decide to not try and stop it, what 3 things did you bring along with you and why? / 1) Well, the first thing would be my art stuff – my easel, paints, canvases, camera, pastels, water colors, pencils, etc…this alone would keep me very busy. / 2) Secondly, a computer so I could write down poems, stories and my really sick dreams. I like typing on the computer versus writing on paper. This would keep me busy for a long time too. / 3) Thirdly, a really cute guy that likes me. He could probably keep me busy too. Right now I have two out three of these things. Guess which one I am missing. I Want To Be Free To Be Human I WANT TO RUN DOWN THE STREETS NAKED / MY LONG HAIR ADORNED WITH ONLY AN ORCHID / OVER AND OVER, I WANT TO BE FRENCH KISSED / UNTIL I GET PUT ON SOMEBODY’S BLACKLIST / I WANT TO EAT VANILLA ICE CREAM WITH HOT FUDGE TOPPING… / DROPPING… / AND DRIPPING OFF MY BODY / I WANT TO DRINK BRANDY IN A HOT TODDY / I WANT TO BE FREE TO BE NAUGHTY / AND LISTEN TO SOMEONE BE RAUNCHY AND BAWDY / I WANT TO BE FREE TO BE SMOKING-ROOM BAWDRY / I WANT SOMEONE TO THINK I’M SEXY AND BITCHY / I WANT TO BE BECOMING AND SLIGHTLY WITCHY / I WANT TO PET SOMEONE’S DOG / WHILE THEY TELL ME ALL ABOUT THEIR PET FROG / I WANT TO EAT SOME COUSCOUS / I WANT TO GO ON A CRUISE / I WANT TO BE SO NAUGHTY THAT IT MAKES THE EVENING NEWS / I WANT TO GIVE SOMEONE SPECIAL THE KEY / I WANT TO BE FREE TO BE THE WILD SIDE OF ME / I WANT TO WEAR A RED DRESS WITH REALLY HIGH RED HEELED SHOES / I WANT TO GO BAR HOPPING AND LISTEN TO THE BLUES / I WANT TO PLAY POOL AND SHOOT FOR THE EIGHT BALL… / LEANING OVER THE TABLE EVER SO NAUGHTILY, MY FALL, MY FALL… / I WANT TO GO SWIMMING WITH NOTHING ON / IN A REALLY COLD RIVER JUST BEFORE DAWN / I WANT WEAR LINGERIE AS MY OUTER ATTIRE / AND MAKE SOMEONE’S ENGINE GO COMPLETELY AFIRE JANE Á PARIS Copyright ©2008 JANE Á PARIS Description - / This is about wanting to be able to be free, to have fun, and to play like most people do every day. Sometimes in life we are damaged and hindered, for one reason or another, and unable to do the things that other people enjoy doing most of the time. It is also very much about sexual freedom…

First we take Paris, then we take the World

First we take Paris, then we take the World Solo Commission Exhibition by Jamin Devonport Regional Gallery / Opening 6pm Friday 7 September, 2007 Exhibition runs 07.09.07 – 07.10.07 Jamin is represented by Criterion Gallery. www.criteriongallery.com.au There will be a free bus departing from Hobart at 12pm, Friday 7 September, and returning from Devonport on Saturday 8th September, departing at 1.00pm. Bookings for bus are essential, please email Jamin – info@jamin.com.au. “In a fusion of front-page juxtapositions spawned by the ‘news of the day’ during the development of these new works, Paris Hilton has become the hero, the enemy, the metaphor and the motivation. In the sinister Get the Girl, Kill the Baddies and Save the Entire Planet Paris appears brainwashed. Empty and vacant, a container for meaning. John Howard appears intrinsically aware of both Paris’s awesome power as a vehicle for any message imposed upon her, and his own control over the Australian people and relative invulnerability. Howard cackles menacingly skyward, neck muscles taught and constricted with the power and testosterone of patriarchy. Paris, or perhaps popular culture, has become Howard’s secret weapon.” / Excerpt from catalogue essay “One Night In Paris” by Scot Cotterell “Now in its third year, the Devonport Regional Gallery’s solo commission series continues to represent emerging and early-career artists, with the financial support of the Devonport City Council and Arts Tasmania. First we take Paris, then we take the World, presents the work of Jamin. While Jamin’s exhibition history is relatively new, in the past four years he has made an enormous contribution to the arts both in solo and group exhibitions. Jamin is a founding member of the Die Laughing Collective, with Paicey and Empire, through which he has been involved in various state-wide and national projects. Jamin is currently studying a Masters degree in Fine Art at the School of Art in Hobart.” / Excerpt from catalogue intro by Ellie Ray, Acting Director – Devonport Regional Gallery
