The rice terraces of Long Ji. This shot was taken from the tracks between the lookouts above Pingan. The rice was just getting ripe so there are touches of gold in the fields.
Landing in Naples I was confronted by this vision of a blend of classical hillside with majestic buildings on top and the contrast of high density apartments and buildings, which are made up of little graphic squares upon graphic squares and plain concrete with minimal window frames. This just caught my eye – and I was fascinated with this mixture of styles just sitting there in the one place!
A house on a hill with a full moon behind. This is exactly as I saw it.

Continuing with this series of Infrared photographs of the landscape images that make up the Neverland Collection. This was shot in Sydney Park after a wild electical storm had lashed the smooth little hills that make up the framework of this completely artifical and totally man made park on the edge of Newtown in Sydney. The darkening shadows cast long fingers over the walkers dotted on the low sinuous hill in the background. This chiaroscuro rendering of the landscape makes this image more painterly to me that something purely photographic and this is further enhanced by the deep and luscious grain that IR film gives as its trademark effect…... within the darkness there is always a little light to be found….
Well I’ve been uploading some pretty and colourful images for the last week or so and now I’m going to post some more of my dark landscapes again. All of this series will be infrared film images taken a couple of years ago at a friends place in the Hunter Valley. This is the first one which till now I’ve called very uninspiringly hill 5…. now its been reinvented as big hill little cow….. hope you like it
This is my last big/little image upload of Infrared landscapes from the daniland series of photographs. This mysterious little scene was shot very early one morning before the heavy enveloping fog had been burnt off by the approaching heat of the day. The fog has shrouded these little trees so densely that if seems like a magical and mysterious scene from a sci-fi movie shot somewhere on an another planet. Walking through the heavy fog in this beautiful heavily forested area is certainly an amazing and magical experince and this particular photo comes as close the the reality of how that feels.
Ok Ok I know I said yesterday’s upload was the last of the big/little daniland IR landscapes….. but …... but I’ve had some interesting feedback on this series so I thought I’d put up another one…. maybe even two. The amazingly beautiful and talented Ange who is a very high level photoshop lecturer commented on a particular digital/analouge montage that I had posted ages and ages ago called starry valley five and in responding to her I realized that the source photo for that image was in fact one of the daniland images. So I thought I’d post the original image along side the digital montage so you all could see the difference in the two pictures. At the time of making the starry valley series I was convinced that the original negatives for the daniland series were too degraded to make convicing photographic works but my post production skills have improved somewhat and to be honest I’ve been pretty pleased with the response from so many people to them. So just for the hell of it here’s the original daniland shot taken in very low light at the end of a magnificent day in the Hunter Valley and you guys can compare it to the digital montage and decide for yourselves which you prefer.

This is one of my very first sunset shots. The weather has been really nice and has made some very lovely sunsets. I happen to live on a hill which overlooks the San Gabriel Valley and this view is taken just to the south of my house. Downtown LA would be towards the right, facing this image. The sun lit up the sky and I pulled out my tripod quickly and tried to figure out the exposure. I took about 8 photos and this one came out the best. This was taken inside my bedroom. I have a balcony outside my room, but I thought taking it inside the room would be more cool hehe :) This was taken with a Canon Elan, 100mm lens, 35mm film, and shot at f4, 38 secs. taking into account reciprocity failure from the film.
“Make up your world” was featured in the group ImageWriting “Make up your world” also won the Gestalt Digital challenge of the group Images & Ideas (16-October-2009) I realized only through discussion with Rosa the relevance of this 60’s song (by Malvina Reynolds, 1962), which might have had some effect on my thinking in early adolescence and perhaps on the way I’ve led my life, up to now…. “Little boxes on the hillside, / Little boxes made of ticky-tacky, / Little boxes, little boxes, / Little boxes, all the same. / There’s a green one and a pink one / And a blue one and a yellow one / And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky / And they all look just the same. And the people in the houses / All went to the university, / Where they were put in boxes / And they came out all the same, / And there’s doctors and lawyers, / And business executives, / And they’re all made out of ticky tacky / And they all look just the same. And they all play on the golf course / And drink their martinis dry, / And they all have pretty children / And the children go to school, / And the children go to summer camp / And then to the university, / Where they are put in boxes / And they come out all the same. And the boys go into business / And marry and raise a family / In boxes made of ticky tacky / And they all look just the same. / There’s a green one and a pink one / And a blue one and a yellow one, / And they’re all made out of ticky tacky / And they all look just the same.” / / Well, it sounded horrific to me, that this is LIFE. I wanted something else, no ratrace, no boxes, no known way uphill and no American Dream, living like the Johnsons, or just competing to be a bit better, while worrying what all the neighbors think of me. / I have lived my life with this in mind… / ...then at the age of 50 I all of a sudden (mid-life crisis;-) felt worthless because others (i.e., friends from primary and highschool) got this “American Dream”, had lots of nice achievements to show for all their years of effort, had nice houses and saving accounts etc…. I, on the other hand, had nothing but my experiences, my thoughts, my understandings, lots of studies, some minor exhibitions to tell about and some drawings I felt good about… But wasn’t this all I wanted from life? Learning experiences, some inner growth, being creative in anything I did, as much as was possible… I never set out to rank high in society (what’s the point?) and never was interested in material achievements to begin with, so what’s the problem? I guess the problem is reaching mid-life and summing up your life according to the standard way of thinking… lol.
A photgraph I took early one morning, tweaked in PS. I was struggling with a name when ‘Lilac Wine’ popped into my head, a song by Elkie Brooks I think..

“Climb if you must. But be prepared to fall down.” The old man’s voice shattered the daydreams the flowed through Ben’s young brain. / He ignored the comment and jogged up the deserted path toward the steep hillside ahead. Halfway up he stopped to enjoy the view. The colors of nature swept over him. The warm air blew the odors of sage and wild fennel and pine across his face which was flooded with sunlight. / He thought for a moment that this was where he wanted to be. From this point he could view the beauty of the scene completely. When he reached his destination, he would be looking back at where he had been as well as the other side. But he would not be able to enjoy the mountain silhouetted against the brilliant sun. / He ignored the thought and continued upward. He had to get to the top.
