This is another shot that I took on the 5th of May as part of the 24 hours of flickr. It is the shot of Australias own (or better my own, since it is in my backyard) Hills Hoist that was prominently featured at the 200 Olympics Opening Ceremony. / And now I have to learn that it was not even an Australian Invention: Taken from Wikipedia: / “The Hills Hoist is an Australian version of the rotary clothes line, the distinguishing feature of which is a crown and pinion winding mechanism invented by Adelaide based Lance Hill in 1945. This allows this clothesline to be lowered and raised. The rotary clothes line itself had been invented as early as 1855, diagrams of which were published in Scientific American that year. This style of clothes line was popularised in Australia by Lance Hill and is a common sight in Australian and New Zealand backyards. It is considered one of Australia’s most recognisable icons, and is used frequently by artists as a metaphor for suburbia in Australia. For many post-war baby boomers it is a symbol of their childhood and an Australian national icon. / It is widely (and incorrectly) believed by the public to be an Australian invention. However, other Australian and American precursors existed decades before it was produced in 1945 in the Adelaide suburb of Glenunga by Lance Hill.” Please also visit my website alexkess.com and my photoblog . House is on top of a hill in Swan Valley Idaho… Art is interpreted differently as everything is interpreted differently thru a persons eyes. Some might see this as a great house with alot af deapth an A+ picture taking location. Others might connect with it on a deeper more emotional level. They may view themselves as an empty house sitting alone on top of a hill in the middle of nowhere. This might be what some strive for…isolation and silence. Whatever stirs that spark of magic that is still deep down that hasent yet been combed out, spanked out or washed out as you grew to who you are today..Take that magic and run with it!!!!
A look at the houses down the hill in Abbotsbury, Dorset, England. In the 11th century King Canute rewarded the services of Orca, his steward, with land in Abbotsbury, Portesham and Hilton. It’s believed there was already a religious community in Abbotsbury, and Orca and his wealthy wife Tola built an Abbey here. The Abbey dominated life in Abbotsbury for 500 years, but was destroyed in the dissolution. The barn survived and is the largest thatched building in the world. / Until the dissolution, Abbotsbury would have been one of the most important villages in the county, and the settlement is laid out around a wide market area. After the decline of its monastery, Abbotsbury became the quiet village it is today. / In 1664, during the English Civil War, Roundheads and Cavaliers clashed at Abbotsbury. Cavaliers besieged the Roundheads in the church tower of St. Nicholas’ church, which still bears the scars of musket fire. / During the Second World War, the coastal front was fortified and defended as a part of British anti-invasion preparations of World War II. Later, the Fleet was used as a machine gun training range, and Bouncing bombs were tested there, for the Dambuster sortie (Operation Chastise). More info /
We had been shooting since 6.30am after racing into the city to capture the fog. We started at the Royal Botanic Gardens and slowly made our way around to Bennelong Point. The morning was crisp, bright, quiet, still, and the light was sensational. At the Opera House the cleaning crews were at silent, diligent work. One of several working on the steps, this young lady was not in a hurry and indeed was quite intent on her task. I had plenty of time to compose the shot and she was not even aware of my presence. Remember that house .. / when you were a child / the house that everyone thought was haunted / you know the one….we all had one… you faced your fear and entered the house on the hill *** / / A wonderful story written for my picture by:iconmahjongmonkey: I want to live in that house on a hill. / The joy I could share / With the one I love near / As we live in that house on a hill. The sun will shine through on each window sill. / We’ll dance in the kitchen / Of that house on a hill. The nights will be calm / But we don’t have to be still. / There is much to enjoy / In that house on a hill. I’ll dream happily of the present we share. / I won’t have a care as long as he’s there, / And we’re in that house on a hill. I’ll smile and sing, / All of our hopes will take wing / As we grow in that house on a hill. But I just sit and stare / At the shadows in there. / Empty window panes / And the garden that snares / My sad little house on a hill. The clouds in the sky fail in deterring / My sunny imagination. / It’s with a hopeful tear / That I turn away / From that abandoned house on the hill.
