In Big Basin, California, USA
First morning at Havasu Falls. This was one of our most memorable backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon, USA.

A rare view of St. John’s Newfoundland from the South Side HIlls. It was an extremely difficult and dangerous hike, but the one of a kind view was worth it. ..................................... / Click here to add me to your watch list. / .....................................
Both the grand and the intimate aspects of nature can be revealed in the expressive photograph… Both can stir enduring affirmations and discoveries… and can surely help the spectator in his search for identification… with the vast world of natural beauty and the wonder surrounding him…. ~ Ansel Adams ~
All photographs are there to remind us of what we forget… In this, as in other ways… they are the opposite of paintings… Paintings record what the painter remembers… Because each one of us forgets different things, a photo more than a painting… may change its meaning… according to who is looking at it…. / John Berger There are actually 3 levels along this portion of the McCloud River in the Shasta-Cascade region of Northern California… a Lower, Middle and Upper Falls… obviously by my caption of this shot… you are viewing Middle Falls. The hike is very scenic back to the Falls, and not overly crowded either. It was like having our own private little waterfall both times we visited this area, as we had the place literallly to ourselves….
This shot is better seen full screen and was taken @ nearly 2000 meters here in Whistler off the Singing Pass hiking trail. The alpine flower were out in force, wildlife all around us, it was so grandiose with the glacier in the distance. If it wasn’t of the 15 km left in our hike at this specific spot I would of stayed here for a few hours but instead, we still had 3 hours to hike out so a few shots later and it’s time to hike down.
And then the arrival on the Jungfraujoch, in the heart of a glorious glacier world on the very roof of Europe! Superb views extend as far as the summits of the Vosges Mountains in France and the Black Forest in Germany. The Great Aletsch Glacier, at 22 km the longest ice-stream in the Alps, begins on the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe.

Background Information: / Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Ebenezer William Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area. The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft). During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway. The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), and flows into the Mistaya River. Inspired by my love of hiking…..and a camp song I learned as a young child: ’...I’m happy when I’m hiking, pack upon my back. / I’m happy when I’m hiking, off the beaten track. / Out in the open country, that’s the place for me / With a true Scouting friend to the journeys end, / Ten, twenty, thirty, fourty, fifty miles a day…’
This is my favorite image which I captured a year ago on an 8-day backpack into the incredible canyon. It was my first trip there, and I was with non-photographer/hard-core hiker types. So, I had to shoot on-the-go with very little time to think about my shots. This was the only day that we saw any clouds, and it really helped make the photo work. I didn’t realize this at the time, but the lines really draw the viewer in to the art. Lucky me. I leave tomorrow for another week-long backpack into the Grand Canyon!
My husband, Homer Steedly, took this photo while hiking in Pisgah National Forest. He was struck by the little tree, rooted in rock and all alone out on the edge of the mountain. This is a true survivor!
Well we have heard of rainbows, and moonbows, but how about a fogbow? / I was hiking along my favorite road in Cades Cove, Sparks Lane, one foggy morning. I had been following a buck and his doe. Dont know what inspired me to turn around, but when I did I saw this. Was a great Christmas treat for me. / First time ever I have seen a fogbow. Grabbed a few shots of it before it faded quickly as the sun was rising. / This shot is now published on the Atmospheric Optic Website, just go here if you’re interested in buying this artwork, please go to the wildlife-appeal Shot this in SS mode / SS at 1/250 (was shooting wildlife, couldnt risk a lower SS) :) / Focal length at 17mm / F-stop at F-16 / ISO at 400 / Exposure compensation at +0.07
This is the view from the last switchback heading up to Half Dome. Looking back into the valley below. The peak to the distant right is Cloud’s Rest.

I return to this exact spot a lot. I have to say it is one of my favorite places to take photographs. This canyon is one of nature’s great cathedrals. It’s hard to explain the feeling that comes over you when you are standing there staring out across the water…Especially during this time of year, when there is nobody else out there. You can have the whole place to yourself, or share it with someone special.

St Mary Falls is a very accessible waterfall on the east side of Glacier National Park. The trailhead is at the Sun Point turnout from the Going to the Sun road. It is 0.8 mile (one way) to St. Mary Falls with a 260 foot elevation drop. Its a pretty easy descent to these beautiful falls with only a mild climb back up. Well worth it.

The peak of the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb. Such an incredible sight passing under the bridge in the late afternoon, to the silhouettes of the climbers all waving to us as we sailed back into Sydney on our cruise. Standing on the top deck of the ship, ‘Land Down Under’ (sung by Men At Work) playing loudly, what a truly great Aussie moment! Camera – Nikon D90 / Lens 55-200mm Textures layers added.
