Eilean Donan Castle one of the Iconic Scottish Castles was just a magic place to visit and photograph. I spent close to 9 hours taking in the surrounds, the atmosphere and the serenity and of course the odd photo or two. Here is one of my favourites, I really like the balance of light and the reflections. This was the 3rd last photo I took during this 9 hour period, and goes to show that patience can pay off. Looking up Loch Tay from the Kenmore Bridge which crosses the River Tay, at Kenmore Village in the Breadalbane region of Highland Perthshire (Breadalbane means “Highland Scotland” in Gaelic). Taken on Saturday 20th December 08 in the middle of our winter. There is no snow at this latitude, but the Loch is high swamping the trees at the left of the shot. Loch Tay is the source of the River Tay which meanders across Scotland before flowing out to sea at the Firth of Tay. Three bracketed JPGs converted to HDR in Photomatix. There is no doubting the fact with their stocky appearance, sweeping horns and eyes that peep out through long shaggy fringes, Highland Cattle win hearts and are favorites amongst animal lovers around the World. What isn’t so obvious is the hardiness of this ancient breed. They were born and bred to deal with the extreme weather conditions of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland making them the hardiest breed of cattle in the world today. / Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus, and software. Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art, particularly computer-generated art, in that it does not involve the computer rendering from a model. The artist uses painting techniques to create the digital painting directly on the computer. / I create the painting, directly on my PC, by using a Wacom tablet, a stylus pen and ArtRage painting software. The Wacom tablet can be compared to a canvas or watercolor paper surface. The stylus pen is my paintbrush.

An image that practically took itself, a perfect mirror reflection, with a tremendous cloud formation as the bow on the parcel. Then five minutes later, the scene vanished when the breeze sprang up. A rare day in the Scottish Highlands, when the weather is this perfect ! / Loch Carron is a sea loch, where sometimes you may spot a seal or an otter !! A ‘burn’ is the Scottish Highland name for a stream, creek or beck. On my walk through the forest, I spotted a broken branch of Rowan, with its lovely Autumnal reds, and placed it on the ledge next to the miniature waterfall. A still – life of Nature. / The water was coloured with the peat that it picks up as it flows through the hillside. / All that was missing were the fairies ! I deliberately blurred the water, using f22 on my Canon EOS 40D, mounted securely on my tripod, fitted with a polarising filter to reduce the light still further ( it was quite low light under the canopy of trees). The shutter speed was 15 seconds ! I used my Tamron 28-300mm lens set at 135mm, iso 100, cloudy wb, RAW file Processed in PS CS3. Most of my processing is done in Adobe Camera Raw. I applied selective curves/levels adjustments, selective colour, and sharpened with Intellisharpen. Ben Loyal lies in the very Far North of Scotland, in an extremely remote and beautiful location. This is a truly wild place, and the only sounds I heard while photographing this scene was some Wild Geese on Loch Meadie, and a lonesome Golden Plover. In mid-Summer, the sunset and sunrise are not very far apart this far North, and this was shot around 3.30am !! PS, we were parked up in a VW campervan, otherwise I definitely would have rolled over and gone back to sleep ! A scan from Fuji Velvia film, shot on a Ricoh KR10 super, f11, mounted on a tripod. Processed in Photoshop CS3. Driving home one evening from Glasgow, after a a holiday in Corsica, this scene begged to be photographed ! A gorgeous Summers evening, when all things seem to be at peace with the world ! / However, encounter Glen Coe on a day when the weather is as wild as can be, and you will experience the very sombre mood and brooding atmosphere that is ‘The Glen of Weeping’. The name of the lochan is a spelling nightmare !! The Buachaille forms a perfect pyramid at the head of Glen Etive as you travel across Glen Coe. The Scottish Gaelic translates roughly to mean ” The great herdsman of Etive” or the “Shepherd of Etive.” / Immensely popular with climbers and photographers alike ! / Mother Nature very kindly placed a burn (stream or river) in JUST the right place for a wonderful photographic composition ! I have applied a little HDR. / Taken on my CANON EOS 20D, with polarising filter, f22 for DOF and to blur the moving water, mounted on a tripod, a single RAW file processed in Photomatix, and adjusted in Photoshop CS3. The Russel Burn tumbles down from the mountains of Applecross, seen as you take the spectacular drive over the Bealach na Ba ( the Pass of the Cattle ) single track road. It is an old drover’s route, and rises to 2,053 feet, from where, on a clear day, you can see outstanding views of the Western Isles in all their glory. Mostly though, it will be so cold and windy that you will will not want to stay too long !! It is a very wild and remote area, so incredibly beautiful. Taken on a Canon EOS 40D, mounted on tripod, / canon 17-85mm IS lens at 17mm. Polariser fitted, ( to slow the shutter for more blur) / f23, three shot hdr (-2EV , +2EV and 0EV …..from a minus 1 stop underexposure reading 0f f23, 1/15 sec. on Aperture priority ) iso 100, Auto wb, RAW files converted in Photomatix and Adobe CS3. / Finished with a little Orton. A scene I have often passed by, but either the light was wrong, or I didn’t have the time. / On this occasion, things fell into place, except for the fact that I had left my tripod at home !! DOH !! (on a shopping trip for provisions to Fort William !) / It is a hand-held three shot hdr, because of the extreme lighting. / Loch Lochy is reputed to have a “monster” like Loch Ness ! Shot on my Canon EOS50D, iso 100, auto wb, three RAW’s at -2EV, +2EV,0EV, hand held braced against a bush for added stability, Canon 17-85mm IS lens set at 53mm, f11, processed in Photomatix, then Adobe CS3, with colour adjustments, and more selective levels / curves. The Faerie pools are very photogenic, and I like them best on a ‘bad’ weather day, when you can attempt to capture the mood of the surrounding dark and brooding mountains. This view is looking towards a famous climb, called “Stovepipe Gully”. / The rocks are slippery, not an easy place to set up a tripod, and I have been observed by more sane folk than myself, crawling on hands and knees for the best vantage point ! / There is a trail/walk alongside the burn and various pools that goes quite some way into the hills, amidst very grandiose scenery….....but prepare for wet feet, the ground is amazingly boggy here …...... and those rocks you have to clamber over to get your shot ? EXTRA slippery !! This is a three RAW HDR, shot on my Canon EOS 40D, mounted on the tripod, polariser fitted, to lose two stops of light for the blur effect, f27, underexposed by half a stop, then a +2EV and -2EV from that reading, iso 100, auto wb, processed in Photomatix, then in Adobe CS3 with various tweaks to colours etc., and where the water was burned out by the HDR process, layered in parts of the original 0EV file. The iconic Liathach rises above Loch Clair, on a beautiful Winter’s day. / Not a perfect reflection, but still a wonderful scene. The dead tree has stood there for as long as I remember, in just the right place for a great composition. / Liathach is one of the Torridon Hills, in the North West of Scotland.
