Some of my works and journal entries are now listed as “not safe for work” so if you want to see everything in my portfolio and journal, make sure you have your filter switched off. You may also notice that a few works I previously pulled down due to ‘concerns’ or ‘complaints’ are back up. No disrespect intended to the people I pulled them down for. This new filter means that anything coming close to the line can be hidden from those people who don’t want to see it. It does not give permission to post whatever the hell we feel like and I realise that. If you feel I have crossed the line, I still urge you to contact me at jo.obrien@hotmail.com I still get regular emails complaining about my work. So obviously I’m still pushing a few buttons. From here on in, without wanting to sound harsh, I’m going to limit my depublishing to official RedBubble requests. If I get a strong complaint in my email I will ask RedBubble admin for a verdict before deciding what to pull down. Now, please don’t get me wrong- I still care about your concerns and still do not want to offend anyone. I always agonise over what I put up. I also don’t want you to feel like complaining to me directly is useless and that I won’t do anything or care about it. But now that the individual can take matters into their own hands and decide what they don’t want to look at, I think it’s fair that I expect them to do so and turn their filter on. I will try to hold up my end by checking the correct box when I upload- please let me know if I’ve missed anything. Thanks guys, / Jo

I’d like to see a button that can hide all comments on my profile so that my potential customers don’t see them if i wish. When you go into a shop to buy prints, you don’t see everyones thoughts on it. Even though the comments are all positive, it distracts a potential buyer. Perhaps a button that hides them for customers outside RB, and a button to hide even from other Redbubblers. That way we have a choice. I realize we gain more exposure as you read other peoples comments and click, but it would be nice to have the option.

Following on the footsteps of the positive responses to “Green with envy” (First image in this series) I thought I would share some more images from that sly looking green character, and add some background story. To the casual passerby, it would have been easy to have missed this shy amphibian. / Well camouflaged, a green tree frog rests against the long flat leaves of a plant that is almost identical in colour to itself, and waits for the day to end. On closer inspection, the frog appears to rest inside a small natural cavern of semitranslucent leaves. Combined with the mid afternoon sun, this cavern, created a natural amphitheatre, bathed in a green light that Dorothy and the people of the Emerald city would have been proud of. I certainly did not wish to disturb the tranquility of the cave, and with the timid creature only measuring approximately 5cm in length, I needed to get up close and personal. / My new found friend graced me with his patience for the few moments I needed, while I hunched down and attempted to see from the perspective of a small amphibian, or its prey. What you see here in this series, is the result. I hope you enjoy viewing these images, as much as I have capturing them. / Matt. Green with envy / Contemplative / Predator / Basking in the light / Up close / Afternoon nap / ( Images can be made available for purchase, on request. )

Hey friends. For a while I’ve known I needed to “clean house” and remove some images in my folio that weren’t really gaining me any credit in the photography realm. It is a hard thing…a very hard thing. It is strange that many (not all) of the shots that I love the most are the ones with the fewest views, but it makes house cleaning tough. Right now I’m pretty close to hitting 10,000 views. If I removed the images now, I’d have several hundred views taken off that counter. This sounds pathetic…but I kind of want to hit 10k before I remove my weak photos from the pool. You know where this is going, can you all go look at my….JUST KIDDING. :) Actually, I’m hoping you will let me know if you think any of my pictures are weaker or clearly substandard, using the rest of my gallery as the standard of course. I am aware this could glean me some dishonest views (I hate those) so I’m putting some images here for you to view and, if necessary, vote OFF THE ISLAND! :) Of course, if there’s another one you think needs to be purged, let me know on this journal. If you are really ambitious you could let me know any particular strengths or weaknesses of any specific photos here. Troublemakers, 38 views (i never intended it to be a great work of art) / Chicago Skyline, 77 views (not all that interesting I guess) / Pink Lady, 53 views (too generic? uninteresting? i love the colors though) / Transparent, 61 views (too plain? boring?) / Chimbo, 84 views (I go back and forth on this one! I like it but it’s just boring for some reason.) / Around the Corner, 123 views (this one just seems subpar for me due to the blown sky in the back) / Columns, 118 views (reeks of happy-snap-ism, is grainy, and has blown highlights) / The Dancer, 240 views (this is the hardest for me…i know it’s not even all that sharp and it’s a little grainy. i just love it, still.) / SO, what do you think? I am thinking that these, and possibly a few more, will get the boot in a few days. (I know, I am so vain that I want my 10,000 views!) -Nikki

I’m realizing the importance of continually evaluating my gallery to make sure what’s there is my current best. Perhaps photos were my best 8 months ago, but boy have I learned a LOT since then! I thought it was wonderful when I first took it; now I hardly want to look at it. So why should I make anyone else undergo the same suffering? :) I’m sure I’ll say the same thing in a year about the photos I’m taking now. But that’s the beauty of improving and changing. Cleaning out, having new distaste for something you created a while ago, just means you ARE improving and changing. It means you have a newer, better standard! If I can’t tell if I took a photo yesterday or five years prior, maybe I need to step out of my box, and work on being a little more creative, learning new processes and techniques. So I just cleared out maybe six or eight images for a total of almost 1600 fewer views in my counter. It’s hard to remove something with a lot of views, but I just had to do it. I’m sorry if your favorites are now gone – but feel free to peruse and find something new that you love. :) Anyone have any thoughts on gallery housekeeping?

Today, i found out why i’ve been quiet and retreating from everyone. / basically, i had the mindset, if my family don’t give a hoot about me, why would anyone else care. i can’t even get acceptance/love/care from my family, who am i to ask for love/care/attention from others. Bad and sad mindset, yea.. Which is why i’m glad i manage to pinpoint it, with the help of my counselor, today. Now i know that just because i’m utterly disappointed by the people in my real life, i shouldn’t ignore those who actually care for me. Even though they’re just online, in my laptop, on the other side of the pc is a real person!! STUPID ME!! i’m sorry for being quiet, and not my “normal” bubbly self. depression is not something anyone have full control over. i can’t just start communicating like nothing happened. i’ve been getting lotsa crap from the people in my “real life”. From not having any support/encouragements/acceptance from my family, to having friends/acquaintances who i’m starting to get sick of for how they’re just using me, or look for me only when they need me. It sickens me, the characters of the people in my real life. It’s like they always have something up their sleeves, either wanting your help, and wanting to make use of anyone or anything they can get. Soo many of them who’re quiet and never contacted me for a looooong time, and suddenly come looking for me just to help them with something or just talk to them because “i’m bored”.. i even had 1 jerk of a “friend” who asked me for the market rates of quotation and then later disappear without a “thanks”. it’s like a mere “thanks.” itself is already kinda rude, let alone to disappear just like that. pfft.. Ungrateful baka.. then there are those who look down on me, when they’re nowhere better themselves. So yea, i will most likely take awhile to get back to my old bubbly self. i don’t even know if i can get back to being sooo cheery, but i’ll sure as hell try. You guys are too nice and kind and loving for me to not love you guys back. Since there’s no one to love in real life, i’ll love all you lovely people instead!! Now for the good news… Read my latest frozenfa’s side journal!!

I’ve been posting some new images for Valentines, and I’ve just earned some gray hairs doing it! I have several versions of each image stored in my Picasa 3 file. This is because I have text & non-text versions of the same image, and also because I can’t always make up my mind which image edit is the best until I see it in RedBubble images. Then there’s the little problem that I’m fumblefingers when I type, so I get lots of errors. Oh yeah, there’s also those html tags I’m always forgetting to add. Long story short, I’m wishing there was a way to preview my listing before I let it lose on the RedBubble world. Guess what – there is! Down at the bottom of your editing page is a button that says “Hide this work from public view.” Bingo! Click this button, save your changes, and you can preview your complete listing & fix all the boo-boos (however long that takes). When you’re satisfied with your preview, unclick & change to “Allow anyone to view this work”, then save your changes. Your perfect listing is now published! Jan’s New Year’s Resolution #13.5: I will always hide my work from public view until I’ve completely done the editing :-)

GOOD GOD.. / I allowed myself to see a documentery called “The Union: The Business Behind Getting High (2007)” and what a doozy.. It never ceases to amaze me how the stupidity of our far right thinking gets us. We spent more money on arresting and finding growers of marijuana and building jail after jail to house the arrest of these growers and distributors than we do on all the heroin, crack cocaine, meth labs ect all the hard drugs participants combine!! Did you know before 1930’s Hemp was forseen back then as a billion dollar industry!! BACK THEN.. billions of dollars is like now trillions..Holy Cow.. will we ever get out from under our own stupidity and become ENLIGHTENED!! Just for a minuet I find peace in my week and in the mood for allowing for all that is in the contrast of life… and the next I watch something that is sooooooooooo crazy and thought-provoking like the money being made in the building of private prisons.. oh my yikes…. then… WELL THANK GOD FOR Unconventional Artistry GROUP AND THE AMAZING HOSTS… / CHEYWINGS AND EARTHMONSTER / SENDING OUT WORD that I had been given the complete honor of being their featured artist this go round and an invitation to view my lastest work LIMBER TRULY .. • Got my calendar! And I'm hiding no more.
    by Mui-Ling Teh

I purchased my Tiny Treasures calendar dur…

I purchased my Tiny Treasures calendar during the calendar sale and finally got it in the mail today! But I delayed in posting… The photos below are linked from the images which I just uploaded onto Facebook. I spent much of the day debating on whether to post there or not. In the past I always avoided putting anything about RedBubble on my facebook because RB was a special place for me to interact with a different group of people; different from people who I see too often. It was also where I’d go when I felt like getting away with what was around me; namely school stress, so really I aimed not to let my university school mates know about Redbubble; I feared that if I brought it out to the open, there may possibly be a good many who would join and it would not be my retreat anymore (especially considering that in architecture school there are a lot of people who can draw well or take good photos); I wouldn’t have minded telling a few, but I wouldn’t know who to choose to tell; and it wouldn’t be fair to the rest… and gossip can easily go around in my class since it is so small and we have all the same classes together and see each other all the time during school… that was what MY school environment was like! But I figured I’d probably tell them eventually. Now is that time. I’ve started having the urge to start opening up more and sharing about my RB life. I can’t hide it forever anyways; the first thing that comes up when I google my name is my RedBubble profile; the chances of that happening owed to the fact that I have an uncommon name. That is not to say I’m trying to promote myself; I’m just simply not going to hide it anymore. Some people form groups on Facebook for their works and invite their friends directing attention to their work. For now I’m only going to post in my own profile. I figured that since not everyone pays attention or takes time to look through my artwork album anyways; I’m not totally unveiling my secret. And for those who do take enough interest to browse and find out, they are more likely the ones who I’d wish to share my work with anyways :) Well, I’ll see how that goes… Anyhoo, here are my calendar pics! My initial reaction when I opened the package was that it looked dark… until I brought it to a brighter spot :P / / Still a bit darker than the original but looks great! And they look bigger than what I’m used too :P / / AND IT LOOKS BETTER IN REAL LIFE THAN IN THESE PHOTOS!!!! I just have a hard time taking pictures OF PICTURES with glossy surfaces – I have to compromise between low light or glare! A weird fisheye effect also happened – of course it’s not like that in real life. / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / and a close-up of the back previews (with my origami sitting on them) / / / / I decided to keep a record of every page in case I may decide in the future to cut out the pictures and frame them…. / / / /
