I bought my own small mounted picture of “her eye…” and it was darker then my original painting. So I had to edit my work and put a new one in. It does not look as good as before but I am hoping the end result will be what I wanted. Sorry everyone.

How does such an ugly, prickly, unfriendly plant produce the most beautiful flowers? Obviously Mother Nature playing games after creating roses and daisies and other beautiful flowers with attractive foliage. The flowers the above cactus produces are shown by Danni as well as below. / There was or is a house somewhere between Adelaide and Dublin that is surrounded by so many species of cactus. I always thought it an ugly garden until I moved to Laura where Mum and Dad had a couple of cactus plants. They were destined to be dug out (such is the sad fate of ugly, prickly plants) but one day they all showed their inner beauty of reds and pinks. Of course, after that day, they were cherished plants of the garden along with all the others. Just an example of why not to judge books by their covers.

Join the Friendly General Discussion Group for this and other (more) interesting and entertaining topics. “Ignoratio elenchi (also known as irrelevant conclusion or irrelevant thesis) is the informal fallacy of presenting an argument that may in itself be valid, but does not address the issue in question.” Source Wikipedia A red herring is usually a deliberate attempt to derail a discussion. I see this happen time and time and time again here on RedBubble. It is almost impossible to have an intelligent discussion because of all the red herrings. Here are a few (fictional but based on actual experience) examples: A: “Domestic violence affects 3 out of 5 women during their lifetime.” / B: “Men are abused too. Abuse is just not a woman’s issue.” A: “Hurricane Katrina victims still need assistance to rebuild their community.” / B: “Crime increased dramatically after the hurricane. It’s like a war zone there.” A: “Often victims of rape are reluctant to report their attack to police.” / B: “There are women who lie about being raped just to punish a boyfriend.” A: “Priest abuse of children is widespread and should be openly addressed by the Church.” / B: “Children are abused by family members and strangers as well.” A: “The man who shot Dr. Tiller is associated with fundamentalist Christian groups.” / B: “Not all Christians advocate shooting abortion doctors.” Both statements A and B are true. However B has little or nothing to do with the original argument A. It is a distraction; a wrench in the works; a red herring. What is the best way to respond to a red herring? Identify it as such and return to the original argument. A: “Thank you for your comment, however the fact that men also suffer abuse is not the issue. . . .” / B: “Abuse is not just a women’s issue.” A: “You are correct. Abuse is not just a women’s issue. However we are discussing woman abuse.” / B: “Yes but . . .” At some point you just have to ignore the red herring or you will be addressing it over and over again. Here is a great book on the art of logical reasoning: Attacking Faulty Reasoning: A Practical Guide to Fallacy-Free Arguments Other articles on logical fallacy Innuendo & Distinction

HI! / Many of you will be aware there has been somewhat of an upheaval across this website these past weeks regarding in general – the rules and policies re expected behaviour and how they have been enforced. In response to this, RB admin and management are working really hard to put together as clear a statement re what is, and what is not acceptable behaviour, and what the resultant penalty for ‘overstepping’ any particular mark should be. Excellent!!! They now have an (apparently draft) document on this that is beginning it’s process of ‘solicited feedback’, firstly by having been assessed by RB staff, currently it is available to group hosts to view and comment on, and sometime (soon, I expect) it should be made available to the general RB membership to add their feedback. This is all a very fine, extremely difficult and confusing (due to the already extremely varied viewpoints expressed) and SLOW process. I have read the proposed new rules and guidelines pdf document I believe now 7 times, making notes as I go. On the whole, there are a few rather minor issues that I believe MAY be queried re how they are to be defined and enforced, but overall, everything is extremely clear and well set out. The earlier ‘rules and policies’ (when I finally found them) I ALSO thought were quite clear, well set out and defined. The one major difference between these 2 documents is that the new one allows for a ‘review process’ for those who wish to activate it, whereas there was no recourse to review before. / This is, in principle, a truly EXCELLENT addition to the rules and guidelines. So far – all fine and good and excellent??? Yes??? With, in my honest and truly thought through opinion, ONE EXTREMELY SERIOUS OMISSION WHICH IS BEING TOTALLY IGNORED AS EVERYONE (well – only hosts so far) RUSH TO AIR THEIR OPINIONS AND ARGUE OVER THE FINE PRINT IN THE NEW GUIDELINES – AS WELL AS ISSUES NOT IN THE NEW GUIDELINES AT ALL (LOL)....... The primary reason there was a great upheaval and huge anger and disillusionment throughout the RB community was NOT the ‘enforcement of any rule or guideline per se’. The primary reason for the huge upheavals and the extremely upsetting and destructive arguing in the forums over the past weeks was the PERCEPTION OF UNFAIR AND INCONSISTENT APPLICATION OF RULES AND GUIDELINES. RB management HAS ADMITTED that, since it’s not well advertised assumption of altered rules in February, it’s application of those rules HAS NOT BEEN CONSISTENT OR FAIR. Nowhere in this new document, or in any of the information provided to, or solicited (from so far only staff and hosts) does Red Bubble management provide ANY information at all on how they intend to implement not just this new rules and policy document (in whatever slightly edited form it may finally see the light of day), but also on how they intend to firstly make sure that these new guidelines and rules are implemented CONSISTENTLY AND FAIRLY, and, how they are going to be made to BE SEEN TO BE IMPLEMENTED CONSISTENTLY AND FAIRLY. If the previous rules were unable to be administered consistently and fairly – what reason does anyone at this point in time have to consider that the implementation of ANY format of ANY rules and guidelines will in future be able to be more fair and consistent than to this point in time? In my honest opinion – an EXTREMELY BIG HOLE in RB management’s response to the recent upheavals. I would hope this could be addressed well BEFORE any potential new rules and guidelines need be submitted to ANY feedback at all….. I welcome any and all opinions here on this – my statement of my opinion. However, I will not reply to any comments left here until, at the earliest – sometime tomorrow. / I am, at the moment, extremely tired. I have spent by far the greater proportion of the past weeks on RB policy and procedure issues, with virtually NO time to myself and / or my artwork. For the sake of my sanity, I am now, on posting this journal, going to turn my internet off, and concentrate for a bit on what I should be spending most of my time doing – my photography (as well as resting lol). / I resolve truly to not delete any comments here that may disagree with what I have written – I am interested in fair and open expression for all. / Cheers - / Kallena xx

Kokeshi (こけし, kokeshi?) are simply wooden (木, ki, ko?) or small (小, ko?) dolls (芥子, keshi) originally from northern Japan. They are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body has a floral design painted in red, black, and sometimes yellow, and covered with a layer of wax. One characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. The bottom is marked with the signature of the artist. (Wiki:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kokeshi) / Ben My otomusuko (younger son) Ben who turns 13 in December, made this beautiful timber kokeshi doll for me during his Japanese Studies class… it remains unfinished in the raw timber state, and i really quite like it that way. I found this old tin and it fit her perfectly for a litte photo shoot this morning. / Ben’s Kokeshi with Sarah my choujo (eldest daughter) who is 17 now, in the insert wearing a beautiful kimono she was dressed up in by a shopkeeper in Japan, she has just come home from a 2 week stay in Japan with a host family Kokeshi were first produced by Kiji-shi (wood artisans) at the Shinchi Shuraku, near the Togatta Onsen, Zaō, Miyagi Prefecture5 from where kokeshi making techniques spread to other spa areas in the Tōhoku Region. It is said that these dolls were originally made during the middle of the Edo period (1600–1868) to be sold to people who were visiting the hot springs in the north-east of the country. A few of my own kokeshi designs below: / The woods used for kokeshi vary, with cherry used for its darkness and dogwood for its softer qualities. Itaya-kaede, a Japanese maple, is also used in the creation of both traditional and creative dolls. The wood is left outdoors to season for one to five years before it can be used.
