Shot this back in November, 2004, when the grass was much greener, and there was water in the dam. There’s only been water in that dam one other time since then, and it lasted around 6 weeks….this is a nice reminder of what we used to have…. Sold this a number of times pre-redbubble, mostly A3 size, and it won me a $1500 prize from the Brisbane City Council, as well the John Herbert medal at APSCON 2005, and also a number of other smaller prizes. This was sold december 2008 on redbubble as a matted print. In quiet light, a golden glow / lasting a hundred perfect heartbeats… Artist’s notes: I have had the wonderful chance of seeing herons actually sunning themselves like this. In fact, there was one day that absolutely struck me with awe about the playfullness of these birds. I was working with a sheetrock crew, and the house we were at was on the banks of the Columbia river. We’d had a series of strange weather incidents in the valley, all of which flooded the river, and actually made a huge mess of it with countless trees/logs, branches, etc. being swept down the mountains and into the water. So for a couple of days, there was an endless log jam floating down the river. I was taking a break at the house during one of those days, and noticed herons standing on the logs floating down the river. They had their wings held out like in my picture above, and they were facing the sun. They would float down just so far, then turn and fly back up river. Next thing you know…here they’d come again… on a new log. All day long these herons kept repeating that cycle, catching rides on the logs while they could…and sunning themselves in the process. I thought that was so interesting and cool. Plus, I love herons anyway…so, it just seemed fitting to add one to this piece. :) (Original, 11×17 300dpi) / FULL VIEW RECOMMENDED* —-—- Stock Credits: model: mjranum-stock http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/art/Little-Black-Goth-5-59785430 / Boat and water: sxc.hu http://www.sxc.hu/photo/937674 / wing brushes: faeth-design http://faeth-design.deviantart.com/art/Wing-Brush-74055731 / textures: my own ©2007-2008 Aimee Stewart, Foxfires / My artwork and photos do not belong to the public domain

A small English village, Hanley Swan in Worcestershire. It boasts a duckpond with a nesting platform. I was camping near there last summer and took a walk to this village. Featured in You’re Accepted and All Countries~Wetlands, Ponds, Lakes, and Rivers I captured this image of a male great blue heron on the shores of Vancouver Island near Campbell River in Canada. I thought the bird showed his beauty and pride in the photo. Wikipedia says, “The largest North American heron, with a head-to-tail length of 91–140 cm (36-55 in), a wingspan of 167-201 cm (66-79 in), and a weight of 2–3.6 kg (4.4-8 lbs), it is blue-gray overall, with black flight feathers, red-brown thighs, and a paired red-brown and black stripe up the flanks; the neck is rusty-gray, with black and white streaking down the front; the head is paler, with a nearly white face, and a pair of black plumes running from just above the eye to the back of the head. The feathers on the lower neck are long and plume-like; it also has plumes on the lower back at the start of the breeding season. The bill is dull yellowish, becoming orange briefly at the start of the breeding season, and the lower legs gray, also becoming orangey at the start of the breeding season. Immature birds are duller in color, with a dull blackish-gray crown, and the flank pattern only weakly defined; they have no plumes, and the bill is dull gray-yellow.” Nikon D300, Nikkor 600 mm f4 lens with 1.4 teleconverter, ISO 400, f11, 1/800s.
THE SUBJECT: / A juvenile Ardea alba (Great Egret) steps slowly and purposefully through the shallows hunting for a meal. THE LOCATION: / Photographed at Lake Cathie, NSW, Australia on a great winter day. THE MAKING OF ‘Pride’: / On a return visit to this out-of-the-way part of the lake I stalked this youngster as it looked for lunch while I was partially screened by trees along the lake edge. / Due to the conditions I was able to make an exposure aimed at a B&W result but had no idea it would turn out as good as it has. / I have printed this on Ilford Galerie Smooth High Gloss Media and so far it has not developed any colour cast. The pastel colors of the sunlit background was the main focus in this painting. The cast of the sun rendered a pale hue to everything. Even the mood of the heron seemed affected. The original is painted in water mixable oils on 16”x20” hardboard.
Here my first shot from this summer’s stay at the Baltic Sea. This heron seemed to have come to one of these stones to settle for the night. Indeed I had seen it some days earlier at the same place in the early morning, assuming it was the same heron. As herons do, it stood very still. This allowed me to take several 5 second shots. As I had no tripod with me that evening, I placed the camera on a big stone on the beach, trying to hold it as still as possible. The rest was good luck. / The shot was taken on the beach near the lighthouse of Buelk near Kiel on the Baltic Sea. The lights in the distance are from the sea-side resort Damp, many miles away on the opposite side of the Bay of Eckernförde. It is based on the texts of two earlier folk songs collected by the Bulgarian writer Lyuben Karavelov and published in Veliko Turnovo in 1878. (ref.:Wik) The first time I heard this song, I was sitting at a late jazz club in Dubrovnik, and it was an instrumental version. For me there is something incredibly organic to this powerful song. There must be literally countless of versions, this one of Tose’s is particularly touching, as the superb youthful vocalist was tragically killed two years ago, and as one writer notes “little did he know the song would become his epitaph.” This is a collage consisting of two of my shots, both superceded by others in the same shoot, (see these below) . I hope you agree these current shots can come together and find a place of their own here in my collection. The egret or heron shown here is one of our locals who has generously swooped over my head on several occasions. This bird represents “The Way” or “The Path” in Chinese symbolism. / *Here are the two shots that beat the two in the Zajdi Zajdi on the day of the shoot

Your image Shine on Me has been nominated for the prestigous Pay it Forward Group by BigD. This is what he had to say about your image - “I would like to Pay It Forward to Kathy Gillentine and the image I enjoy so much is Shine On Me Her work lately is just amazing and she shoots straight from the camera. She does no photoshop editing. The image Shine On Me I believe she had to be ready before hand to take this. In other words, she had to shoot quickly before it flew. I have been around Great Blue Herons and they don’t give you much time to set your camera. Camera settings have to be set up before hand when taking wildlife images. Good job, Kathy and keep them coming” Thank you so much for this honor Big D / this means alot to me coming from you Please view large.
